Building a better tin man.

Mission: Season 5: Episode 2: Operation Save Humanity
Location: Victor’s Engineering Office
Timeline: MD 3 11h15
1044 words - 2.1 OF Standard Post Measure

The sight of the small flying robot moving through engineering was a slightly odd sight especially with no emergency in progress. Stopping outside the chief engineer's office the excom replicated his potato gun and used the projectile to activate the door alarm.

All of a sudden Engineers who were assigned to Security as well as Security Officers themselves jumped up to see what was going on.

Ensign Napoleon Bond was the first to the scene followed by several security officers.

Victor walked in to see what the commotion was all about. “What is the meaning of this?”

“Small flying robot Sir,” Napoleon answers.

“Robot,” Victor ordered, “Identify yourself.”

Snow was rather hurt by this. Did most of them not recognize him? How long was it since many of these people had been in sickbay. " Ensign BF 345078." He replied his artafical voice hiding his disappointment.

Victor scratched his head for a moment. “Seems I have been all work. I need to socialize more. Since I came on board, I have been concentrating on the job, my department and my family. BF, I lost a lot of friends. Imagine loosing your whole universe and you have to start in a new one. “

Napoleon asks, “Should I go.”

“You should stay,” Victor says with a shrug. “The universe I came from, there was a version of you. I already knew what you are capable of doing. So BF, how may I help you today.”

The exocom replicated a holographic projector showing the marine armour he was modifying into a new body. He then flashed into the modification he'd need to be made to his current one to allow him to connect to it. " I require your assistance making adjustments to my mainfraim. I need a connected device to be able to operate my new body."

“Cybernetics is my forte,” Napoleon says as he examines the schematics. “Lieutenant, do you mind if I run with this?”

“Yes but stay within Starfleet parameters,” Victor says looking at the holographic image as well.”

" All I need is a new primary connection port installed here. " John replied highlighting the holographic layout where it needed to go. " Doctor Sthilg has warned me not to try and install it myself."

Napoleon could tell BF speech was mispronouncing words but he smiled as he complied with BF’s request. “Most interesting,” Napoleon said rubbing his chin. “BF. There you go. I read your file. You are about three years old correct. Do you feel you evolving or do you feel you could but no one to help thee?”

" My work in sickbay has shown me the benefits of having arms. Having only one area for implements limits my abilities to carry out my tasks." Snow explained.

“So what could we do to help you to be more mobile?” Napoleon asks as one finger on his lips tapping after he stopped talking to indicate he was thinking, “I am sure you might have pondered.”

" Sadly not, whilst in my new body i would lose my teleporting abilities." The exocomp replied.

“Now that would be a conundrum,” Victor interrupts. “One might think in solids but what if you two think of other methods. Remember a ship does not uses an arm to pull another ship. It uses a tractor beam.”

" But a tractor beam can't hold a hand as it struggles to beath." The small robot replied calmly his experiences from medical showing. " I have designed it to be detachable if needed. "

“Questions are,” Napoleon asked, “What are you wanting us to do for you plus do you have schematics already developed? Are you wanting to become more human?”

“Keep in mind,” Victor added, “We have to uphold Starfleet regulations about synthetic life.”

“Agreed,” Napoleon sighed.

" I volunteered to learn more about organic life when i joined Starfleet medical. My being here is helping us understand humans more. As for you, i need your help to install the connection port as i can't reach that section of my body. I have made the schematics already." He said as a small section of his body opened up to reveal a data crystal.

“That does place you at a disability,” Napoleon saying complying. “So you say to join Starfleet. How were you created?”

" On my people's adopted homeworld. I was part of batch ten. Number twenty-seven to be exact. " The small robot replied as it beamed a hologram of the dusty red planet they had been given. The settlement was clearly designed for robots of his size looking like an iron dome with small holes for them to exit.

“So how do see yourself evolving from your original design,” Napoleon asked. “You are sentient life capable of becoming more,” Napoleon asks as he was trying to get to the heart of the matter. “Lieutenant, does this fall under the Prime Directive?”

“Just as long as you do not make him something that is totally different,” Victor says, “If there is objection, just be sure you are able to be able to restore him to his original design.”

" I see myself becoming a better nurse. To help me and my people understand organics." The exocomp replied honestly.

“Napoleon,” Victor says as he thought. “We need to improve his scanning. The holographic imaging you are working on the communication badges, you need to apply to what our friend can do. You have the prototype ready for the doctor. Using technical specifications of what a nurse can do and not what a doctor does.”

Napoleon gave a smile. “Of course. We do not want an incident of a veterinarian delivering a human baby.”

“So you had that problem in this reality as well,” Victor face palming himself. “Geeze.”

“Do not worry Lieutenant,” Napoleon said nodding, “All the upgrades on communication badges to consoles will prevent that from happening on the Elysium.”

“Ensign BF,” Victor says to him, “Napoleon will work with you on this. He and I need to go right now.” Victor knowing the time, excused himself.

Napoleon says to BF, “Sorry, we had to cut this short. Come back in two days and we can work on this.”

Victor and Napoleon had to go to the next meeting on their calendar. They felt bad about cutting the meeting short.
