Sthilg was humming to himself again as he shook the bottle full of milk and vitamins before slowly opening the small wardroom.
His granddaughter still only a day or two old heard him immediately letting out a few happy gurgles as she reached out for her granfather,
" Sssush little one." He said slowly picking her up. " We don't want to wake mummy do we." he said his eyes glancing over to Alicia.
“Who says mummy is asleep?” Alicia, Who was lying on her side rolled onto her back and offered a smile as she looked at Sthilg with a bottle of milk in his hand. “She gets all excited when grandad is around, she loves you to bits!”
" I hope i can prove worthy of that love. " the old gorn said as he pulled up a stool next to his daughter as he held his granddaughter tightly to him as he fed her. " How are you doing little one?" he asked Alicia.
“I’m... okay I guess.” She offered a more brief smile. “No, that’s a lie!” She sighed. “I’m a mess dad!”
"You're doing great little one. You've been through a very traumatic experince all for thisss amazing little creature." the gorn reassured her as he looked at the small hybrid in his arms.
“I wish I was doing great” Alicia hung her head. “I’m an emotional mess, I can cry at the drop of a hat. You know as well as I do postnatal depression is a real threat to new mothers.”
The gorn nodded as his grandaughter gurgled in his arms. " Indeed little one i know asss doesss my ssson in law. We’re all going to help you through thisss." Another gurgle from his granddaughter made him glance at her with a warm smile. " Yesss your daddy going to help me and you look after mummy."
Alicia smiled as she held out her hand to her tiny daughter, feeling her little fingers wrap around her own finger and hold onto it with remarkable strength for one so small. “She’s amazing dad” A few tears ran down her cheeks.
" Ssshe isss isssn't ssshe." the gorn said moving his arm to give his daughters shoulder a ressuring squeeze. " Have you and that ssson in law of mine thought of a name for her yet?" He inquired.
Alicia smiled and nodded. “We came up with N’Vea, roughly translated it means Seed which is life. It seemed somehow appropriate. Do you like it?”
" A fine name for a perfect little girl." The gorn said as shifted his hand slightly to make the little girl more comfortable. " Is there anything you'd like me to get you?" He inquired.
Alicia shook her head. "I don't think so, I'm treated like a queen here I have everything I could want." She grinned. "If you treat every patient the same I'm surprised you don't have a sickbay full of people not wanting to leave!"
The gorn let out a soft chuckle as a happy gurgle came from his grandaughter. " Would you like to hold her?" he enquired
Alicia smiled and nodded. "Would I ever!" The love for her tiny daughter was plain to see. Sitting up she nodded politely as a young nurse who was passing fluffed her pillow to make her more comfortable.
Slowly and carefully the gorn handed her over though the little creature still held one of his fingers tightly. As if she knew she would be forever safe in his arms.
The love in Alicia's eyes was evident as she looked at her tiny daughter. She couldn't help but grin at the reluctance to let go of Sthilg's finger. "She loves you very much."
Amazing isssn't it. " The old gorn as he slowly teased her finger lose. " It'sss okay little one. Grandadsss jussst over here." He said softly.
Alicia looked into her daughter's eyes, the little pools of colour drew her in as she was lost in the beauty. "You are amazing little one, mummy will always protect you."
The gorn smiled at the sight as used the opportunity to swap in some fresh clean bedding into the little ones' crib. Carefully placing in a fresh pillow he placed one of his teeth under it. It was an old gorn tradition meant to protect the newborn from the servants of the dark one.
Alicia gently sat her daughter up, rubbing her little back to help get up any wind left from her feed. “So how does it feel to be a grandfather?” Alicia looked at Sthilg. “I can see how much you love it, I can feel how much you enjoy it, I just... I guess I just want to hear you express it.”
" I love it asss much asss the day you asssked me to adopt you little one. I thought i'd never have a chance to have a family sssince your sssister and my Ssshassssssou left thisss plane. You've given me that back and i will be forever grateful." He said warmly.
Alicia's smile practically shone. "I couldn't have you being all alone, not after everything you've done for me. I needed a father and I'm proud to call myself your daughter."
The gorn smiled as he sat down next to her again and put his arm around her. " And i thank you for feeling that pride in me little one."
"Nothing could change that dad" Alicia offered a teary smile. "You're the best father a woman could want, and the best physician I've ever had the pleasure of working alongside of."
The gorn smiled as he reached for a tissue and handed it to her. " Dry thossse eyesss little one."
Alicia smiled as she took the tissue, wiping away her tears. She couldn’t help but grin as little fingers tried stealing her tissue out of her hand.
" Already looking after her mother isn't ssshe." The gorn said as they enjoyed the moment before his combadge bleeped. " Sssorry little one duty callsss." He said standing up as he recognized the signal for a medical emergency.
Alicia nodded. “Go, we’ll be fine.” She smiled warmly. “Oh and dad... We love you.”
" I know little one i know." The doctor said as he hurried towards the emergency. He made one quick look back and waved as he hurried off burning the image of his daughter and granddaughter into his brain.
