Vanessa sauntered back in forth in one of her more casual outfits as she studied the broadcasts from the surface of this world. Writing down notes. She then tapped her combadge. "Commander Lovejoy. This is Consul Vanessa Alcean... May I speak with you?"
"Certainly Counsel, I will come to your office." Garrett announced and closed the linl.
Lovejoy entered as Vanessa was some of the New Cannanites idea of televised entertainment. "Behold the glory of television, Commander. Entertaining, but utterly useless. Though you can learn quite a bit about a society from their theatrical productions."
"Just what am I looking at?" He asked Vanessa.
"Their Society has progressed at the same rate you might expect any society. You have traditionalists who hearken back to the glory days, and progressives who seek reform, and radicals who seek anarchy." Vanessa mentioned. "Their media is especially interesting. It is state controlled, propaganda based on old Greenish maxims. But there is signs of critical evaluation of their past ." Vanessa mentioned. So far, their media has noticed are arrival and has begun rampant speculation in accordance to what the state wants the common person to believe about us." Vanessa mentioned. "But surprisingly forty percent of their populace does not get their news from their media. Instead, it's through disreputable tabloids and conspiracy theorists." Vanessa pointed out. Trying to dispell myth from fact will be like trying to thread a needle using a nail."
"I see and just what are their propaganda mills saying about us?" Garrett asked. He wanted to know exactly what they would be facing.
"They're saying that are ship is full with humans who have lesions and three eyed abominations. Including classic 'gray's' and a wild speculation we may have every single UFO abductee for the last three centuries onboard." Lady Vanessa mentioned. "But there is an underground media network run by more centralist agendas that believe in... Mutually Beneficial Arrangements." Vancessa straighened her french braid. "My good Commander, I'd negotiate with fascists, but that would get me nowhere on the best of times. But Patriots and Loyalists... Now there is pragmatic people, with a copy of Machivelli's 'The Prince' That I can negotiate all day long with. They're interested less in lofty ideals, but what's good for New Cannan and peace would be good for New Cannan. You have to have some appreciation for Raison de'tat. (Reason of the State.) Even if we have to sign a trade agreeming with them. Stability is always preferable. Our best case scenario; Find a significant minority that can successfully filiibuster the vote, and negotiate with them." Vanessa mentioned. "I realize it may sound archaic, Commander. But Realpolitik will bear fruit here."
"Not at all Consul. I too would rather deal with pragmatic people. You can talk to them, find what really matters to them and go from there. They have a style to themselves, a sense of purpose and they also have a clear and unwavering view of what is important." Garret replied. "And once we know what they find important to themselves and their constituents and agreement can be crafted, agreed to and signed. Much neater than having to use force to impose a treaty no party is happy with."
