Well, that's one meeting down, one more to go. Potentially two more to go, but Myne kept hoping the second one wouldn't happen anyway. It really had no place or reason to happen, and that was for everyone's benefit. Whether they knew it or not, in a sense Myne was saving everyone time and nerves. She really was a unsung hero!
Self praise aside, she had survived her first encounter with a Gorn today! Now that was something to write home about and give her parents a nice little shock. Sure, Commander Sthilg was not threatening in the slightest and he was one of the sweetest and gentlest officers she has ever met, but he was still a Gorn. As long as she left the sweet and kind part out of her message, her parents should still get a bit of proper fright from it.
It all boiled down to knowing what parts of the truth to relay back to them. Make them seem like she was living daring, dangerous and dashing adventures. Not... stay locked in her cabin, reading endless reports and books at nauseum. Or being on active duty, then back to reading, then back to duty, and so on, with nothing in between. Her parents did not like how stuck in routine she usually was.
Anyway, why was she on this deck again, duffle bag in hand and pad in the other? Oh right!! Lieutenant Whavi, her Chief Operations Officer. Myne was supposed to repost as her new Assistant Chief. Ah, there's the door, nice. Time to make another horrendous first impression, despite her most well meaning intentions. With that last thought, Myne passes through and looks around rightfully lost and out of place.
Baeryn, forever foregoing an open door policy, looked up from her desk as her new ACHOP walked in. Looking a tad bit lost. It brought a smile to Baeryn's face as she stood to greet her. She remembered how lost she was the first few weeks aboard the Elysium, ending up here and there with no clue how to return to her cabin. She was glad those days were behind her.
"Well hello there." The hybrid said with a welcoming smile.
Myne literally shakes her head briefly to snap herself out of her mind and look around for a split second before noticing the person smiling and greeting her. She does not move, but instead raises her hand with the pad which she has yet to put aside and smiles nervously.
"Hi hi. Erm... do you happen to know where I can find the chief of ops around here? I am kinda, sorta, maybe, should report to him... her... erm... them?! No idea, sorry, I am mumbling." She breaks into a nervous, rather obviously forced laugh clearly regretting every word that came out of her mouth.
Baeryn laughed lightly as she came around the desk and extended her hand to take the PADD. "I know because she is me." Her obsidian eyes seemed to sparkle when she smiled.
"I was just informed you were coming aboard. Lieutenant Redal is it?" Baeryn gestured to a chair in front of her desk. "Here, have a seat while I get you sorted." Baeryn leaned against the front of her desk looking over the Lieutenants orders.
"You?" Myne squeaks. "Unholy gods, I am sorry Chief! I mean boss! I mean Lieutenant, I mean... erm... fuck me..." She grumbles an goes to take a seat quickly swallowing hard and breathing a few times, looking down and sighing.
"Erm, I am really sorry Chief, I am not good at... the talking parts. Yes, I am Lieutenant Myne Redal. I would prefer Myne for easy name calling, but Redal is pain in the... posterior and he prefers Redal." She more or less just makes more noises with her mouth to cover her previous verbal blunder with more verbal blunder. "Also, that is my pad." Myne points at her PADD that Baeryn took from her.
Baeryn handed the PADD back to Myne, "Breath Myne, we gotta get through the talking parts, even if we detest them. But two things, I do request that you mind the language you use while on duty, no swearing. Second you can address me as chief, lieutenant, or Whavi. Which ever is most comfortable for you."
Crossing her arms Baeryn thought how she could lessen the poor girls nerves. It was evident by the rambling she was not a fan of conversation, or maybe it was just Baeryn that made her nervous? She'd have to wait and see, but they would be working together often so this was definitely an obstacle they needed to overcome quickly. She waited patiently for Myne to retrieve her orders, noting the duffle bag she carried with her.
"Yes chief, sorry chief. Didn't mean to swear chief!" Myne replies completely naturally, repeating chief a bit too much without intent and with a nervous tone. "Right, breathing! Good idea chief!" Taking that advice, she does take a few breaths but still ends up smiling awkwardly.
"Sorry chief, my mouth usually gets away from me without my brain being able to reign it in. I am not good at the whole knowing what to tell people and silence is kinda creepy and even more awkward than I am." Myne tries to explain still parroting away just to say something as opposed to the unpleasant option of not saying anything.
It actually takes this freaking long for Myne to figure out the brilliant part where she has left Baeryn still holding the PADD out to her. And with a grimace and very embarrassed she picks it from her hand and turns to her duffle bag. Placing the PADD inside and taking out her orders to hand them over to her chief. "I swear chief... alright, no swearing. I promise chief... still a kind of swearing if you look at it if you go by the definition that it is meant to make a pledge... Chief, I am a really really go... erm... decent officer while on duty!"
Baeryn simply stood there, letting the girl ramble on and on, boy she was going to have her hands full with this one. She hadn't come across someone so talkative in years, nor had she heard her title more times in under a few minutes, even while conduction department meetings. The whole situation made her chuckle. Taking the new PADD from her Baeryn began looking over the information she had already read up on, but she decided to give the girl some time to get all her words out before saying anything.
"USS Pegasus huh." Baeryn kept her eyes on the PADD. She was wondering how long Myne could sit before her leg started jiggling. "How was your time aboard that vessel?"
Nodding Myne scratches the back of her head and shrugs. "Yeeep chief, good ol' work horse. The captain did not like me calling the ship that... neither did my old chief. But it is a good ship so nothing to add there." She looks a bit nervously as she sees her new chief looking over the PADD.
Myne had a good, actually spotless record at least in what concerned her abilities as a ops officer. She was dutiful, reliable and good at her job. However, she was always airhead, awkward, and generally strange to be around otherwise. Even during duty hours she had moments of seemingly having a understanding problem with others, that usually just boiled down to her arguing the same point, but from a rather weird point of view.
"Chief, I kinda think they didn't like me very much back on the Pegasus. But I tell you chief, I do my job and that's all that counts. Right chief? I am just not really good with people. I've been told I don't know when to shut up and other weird stuff like that."
"I can't speak for the crew of the Pegasus but I can tell you that you won't feel that way here. The Elysium is made up of a wide variety of people, all of whom are understanding, accepting, and fairly easy going." Baeryn took a minute before handing back the padd with a smile. "Your going to fit in just fine, Myne."
"Have you met with Captain Carrington or Commander Lovejoy? By the looks of the duffle your still carrying I'm assuming no. Some advice?" Baeryn asked.
"Thank you chief." Myne replies softly, offering a more calm, genuine smile. "Kinda optimistic, but heck, I'll take it chief." The next question was rather more difficult, as Myne wasn't too eager to get such a early chance at making a bad impression with the command staff so early on.
"Nope chief, did not meet them. Just got on board and had a chance to ruin my chance at a good impression with Commander Sthilg. Got the all clear for duty at the very least. Found out that Gorns can live to four hundred years, even a thousand, and they do not eat Trills. Which is kinda amazing if you ask me... oh I am rambling..."
"Sorry chief. In any case, I do not have any advice I can give you chief since you did not mention the topic on which you want advice on." Myne concludes looking at her chief a bit confused.
Baeryn couldn't contain the deep bellied laugh she released, "No...No Myne I'm going to give you some advice." Finding composure she continued, "Go get settled in, explore a bit. Just make sure not too much time has passed before meeting with the Captain and the XO. Should you have any questions in the meantime you know where to find me. If that fails use the computer." She smiled at the trill. "You are dismissed."
Myne looks strange and confused at her chief laughing, not understanding the reason and of course assuming the worse, because that is sensible. "Oh? Sure, I don't mind advice." Then she listens carefully, looking less confused but a bit reluctant. "Must I really do that? No mind... I guess I do..." Sighing deeply she gets up and nods towards Baeryn before picking the duffle bag.
Moving to the door to leave, she turns and looks at her chief one more times. "Thank you chief. Be seeing you around? I think... did this meet go well or not? I can't really tell." She asks rather innocently before leaving.
Baeryn smiled and nodded to the trill, "We'll be seeing each other for sure, and yes Myne, this meeting went well. I look forward to working beside you." She was genuine in her parting statement.
When Myne was gone Baeryn rounded her desk to take her seat once more. Still smiling. 'This woman is sure to keep things interesting around here.' she thought as she dove back into her work.
