Sthilg let out a yawn as he walked down the ship's corridors. It had been a long day dealing with the ship's refugees and the many health problems many were suffering from. Still, the ship's doctor hadn't forgotten his own crew health needs.
Pressing the button on Naxea's door the old lizard politely spoke. " Hello, Naxea it's Sssthilg here for your arm checkup."
"Enter," she called from within. Naxea had taken a break from Marine Country to eat and rest until the next orders came down as she stood up from her chair with a slight grunt.
"Hello, my friend how are you thisss day?" The gorn said as he entered making sure to keep his distance
The sight of Sthilg still unnerved her some from her experience in the Mirror Universe but she was becoming used to him being around and it seemed like the more he did so, the more at ease she felt. "Hey Sthilg. I'm tired but doing well," she grinned. "What brings you by? Can I get you anything?"
"I'm here to check on your arm. I could ussse a coffe I've been in and out of the sssurgical ward all day." the old doctor responded.
"My arm seems to be getting better albeit a little slower than I'd like but maybe it's because I've been busy ever since I got released," she admitted as she made her way over to her replicator. "Regular coffee, hot," she ordered. She was still using the motor assist band when on duty. Though she enjoyed the benefits it provided with normal range of motion and strength, she knew it was just a clutch for her, which she hated the thought of. She picked up the coffee, turning to hand it to Sthilg.
The old gorn gave her a warm smile as he carefully took the cup from here." Thank you my dear. You won't believe the messsss sssome of the refugeesss are in. Half of them could have been fixed yearsss ago if green colony weren't so insssane."
"I've never truly understood the actions of Terran History. How such a violent people ever achieved Warp Drive still baffles me," she stated before taking a seat in a nearby sofa and offering Sthilg the same.
" A quessstion that bafflesss me as well. My own peoplesss violent conflict only had ten thousand causssalitiesss at most. " the old lizard said as he took the seat. " Are homeworld being vast jungle made moving large armiesss and sssuppliesss rather hard until anti grave became the norm. "
Naxea nodded, listening to Sthilg. "My people were a peaceful race until we met the Cardassians. I often wonder where my people would be had we never encountered them. I mean we were sailing the stars when humans were still sailing their oceans," she let out a sigh as she stopped thinking of what could have been.
"One of the many timesss where history could have ended up on either ssside of the coin. " The gorn said as he puzzled the idea through in his head for a second. " But don't forget your people sssurvived what they did to you without becoming them in return. That isss a true victory."
"I wonder if that's true. Before them, my people excelled in arts and science and then the Cardassians taught us war, pain, and suffering and we had to learn to fight because of it. Well, if it is a victory, it is a small one." She paused for a moment. "So should I continue to use the motor assist band for my arm?" she continued, wanting to change the subject.
"Let's run a few tessst and sssee if it'sss ssstill needed." The gorn said as his artificial arm turned into it's scanner mode as his palm light up with it's blue light. " Hold ssstill my dear."
Doing as instructed, Naxea watched as Sthilg began to scan her new arm. "You know, I don't think you ever told me how you lost your arm."
" You haven't. During the dominion war the war bird ship i wasss on was captured. The Cardassssssiansss threw usss into the prison they called the hole. A former deep planet mining operation turned hell hole ruled over by a truly sssadistic bastard of a vorta. He wanted to try and break the alliance between the KDF and Ssstarfleet so when sssome fedration marinesss broke into the guardsss medical center to sssteal sssuppliesss he commanded that members of the KDF would be punished by mutilation me being the first one of them."
The gorn paused as he gave his friend a reassuring look. " Looking back it was rather farcical. He had no idea about gorn biology so the sssaw he'd brought kept breaking on my inner elbow. When he final got it off hisss head exploded as KDF commandoesss had arrived to free usss and took his head off with an old slug thrower. The doctorsss did their bessst but he causssed so much damage i couldn't take a cloned replacement ssso artificial it was. "
"I'm sorry," she said genuinely. She hadn't been old enough to join Starfleet when the Dominion War started. She recalled how eagerly she wanted to serve, watching the news vids at her home on New France Colony.
" It's okay my dear. You asssked and I happily explained." He said as he finished his scan. " Everything's looking great. I'd ssstart usssing the motor assssssissst band only if you need to." He said giving her a reassuring smile.
"Thank you," she said as she looked at and flexed her arm some. "By the way, how are things going with you?"
"Thingsss are fine. Though my grandssson isss keeping me very busssy." The old gorn said smiling. "Though I have coughed up a pocket watch that's been lodged in my intessstine for ancestorsss know how long."
Naxea raised an eyebrow. "How the heck did you swallow a pocket watch?"
"That'sss the mystery my dear. I can't remember ssswallowing it. I have the computer running it through it's sssystemsss to sssee if it can make out sssome faded writing on the front to hopefully clear it up. " the old doctor replied.
Naxea could only chuckle and shake her head. "Well, keep me informed and I will follow your advice about the motor assist band."
"I will. I'll sssee you later my friend." The gorn said as he stood up and headed for the door.
"Thank you," she replied, grinning as she watched Sthilg exit her quarters.
