Starfleet Academy was not the place she had been led to believe it would be. She was rather over the patronising tones her roommates used and now she sat in XEN101 listening to the professor drag on and on about Vulcans.
When he finally drew breath a voice from down the auditorium called out “Sir, are the Romulans the only offshoot of the Vulcan race?”
“No” the man, greying and in his fifties replied. “There are many. Some very obscure and some very well known.”
“Like?” the cadet was Human, male and Shanyrria had seen him about campus.
“Well, for starters there are the Debrune, who has heard of them?” Many, almost all hands raised at that. “Then there are the Varlarians. How many have heard of them?” This time, the only hands raised were the three Vulcan cadets and of course Shanyrria’s.
“Cadet T’Ket.’ The lecturer waved for the Vulcan to stand. “Tell us about the Varlarian people.”
“They are infants.” The Vulcan said. “They reject logic, embrace their passions and live under a monarchy.”
Another Cadet, Also Vulcan stood as well. “Cadet Sa’rt?”
“They live on a world called Varlar of M class designation. They are warp capable and are members of the federation since 2278. As cadet T’Ket says, they are infantile in their emotions. They refuse to see that Logic, and the Vulcan way, is preferable to the wilder side they display.”
Shanyrria made loud gagging sounds from her seat at the back.
That drew the Lecturer’s attention. “Cadet?”
She stood, pushing her hair back from her ears. “Cadet Shanyrria Kelmys.”
“And what do you have to add to this discussion Cadet?”
“A lot.” She replied coolly. “As I am Varlarian.”
People turned in their seats to stare. She however kept her gaze on the Lecturer. “You wish to know about the Varlarian people then ask a Varlarian. Do not ask a Vulcan or a Romulan or even a Debrune. That is akin to asking a Klingon about Humans.”
The room was silent.
The first Vulcan cadet turned and raised his eyebrow at her. “Do you disagree with my statements.”
“Yes” Came Shanyrria’s reply. “I do. For they are coated in racism.”
“Racism?” The cadet almost sputtered.
“Careful” Shanyrria warned, “Emotions lead to the dark-side”
A few of the human cadets chuckled at that.
“Yes Cadet T’Ket, Racism. Vulcans, look down on Varlarians. The Human Oxford dictionary defines racism as: The inability or refusal to recognize the rights, needs, dignity, or value of people of particular races or geographical origins. More widely, the devaluation of various traits of character or intelligence as ‘typical’ of particular peoples.” She moved from her seat, snagging her bag on her way, and moved down the steps towards the lecturer. “Varlarians left Vulcan in your Human’s 5th century. We found and colonised Varlar in the 6th century of your calendar. Our race created a new home there, a different culture, one where emotions are valued, and peace reigned. Our people value nature and cities have been built in tune with natural surroundings, in jungles and in mountains, even under the seas.”
Turning she glanced at the Vulcan cadets, “Before one degenerate’s a race, one should make sure they are correct in their knowledge. While we are descended from Vulcans, and yes, we do not focus mainly on Logic, we are not infantile. We embrace knowledge and even logic though we do not allow it to dictate their actions. we embrace nature and we have excellent craftsmen and women. Poetry, Literature, music, culture abounds and there is little reason for war, though we do have a standing army, but it is called a defence force. Which we sent to assist the federation in the dominion War. Since then, 3 Varlarians have joined Starfleet every year, though we do not always make it through the academy. We have grown in ways that we feel is best for us.” She placed her fingers on opposite elbows and bowed. And as she straightened she calmly gave the Vulcans another look. “We do not bad mouth our cousins. And we do not force our beliefs on others. Unlike Ambassador T’Vel in 2189, when she travelled to Varlar and tried to enforce Vulcan philosophy on us. Varlarians are very different from what is said about them. It is suggested, highly, that you … how do earthlings put it… walk a mile in someone else’s shoes?”
Then she turned glanced at the Chrono, bowed again to lecturer and left the auditorium.
