Rhen was sitting in the back of the shuttle reading a PADD while making notes on his new assignment the Elysium. It seemed the ship had gone thru quite a bit losing her Captain during a terrorist attack having a Temporal encounter. A part of him felt glad he was not a part of either incident time travel particularly was not his idea of a situation to be involved in. Upon his briefing to this assignment, Rhen was expected to meet members of the Security upon his arrival which was a good way for him to see the type of people he was to be working with.
Sitting at her desk, Lia noted a new arrival was about to join her department. She read his joining orders on her computer and turned to her 2i/c, "S'hib, could you find out when this new Warrant Officer is due to arrive, and meet him and do the business with his training?"
"I thought that's what the Academy was for?" S'hib remarked as slowly clicked through the main office, sipping from a mug that was proportionally sized for him and him alone, oversized handle and all.
"Pardon me," Rhen spoke up from behind outside the doors to the office. "I'm am looking for a Commander Aurelia Taylor and a Lt. Commander S'hib. The deck officer in the shuttlebay said they most likely be here." Rhen removed his military cap placing it under his arm before stepping inside.
Lia turned and looked at the stranger, "And you would be who exactly?" She looked over to S'hib, "Do you know who this is?"
"Rhen Tal, Ma'am, the new investigator," Rhen replied enthusiastically.
Standing up, Lia held out her hand. "Oh you're the new guy, we were just talking about you. Welcome to purgatory and this Officer here will assist you in settling in." She pointed at S'hib as she spoke, "I'm Commander Taylor, your Chief. If you have any problems, my door is open."
Rhen looked at her hand then shook it but he seemed a bit bothered. "Yes, I understand that you are to be my superior it is something I am still going to have to get used to." He sat down on a chair nearby. "I was a Lt. Colonel in my people's military a role I worked hard for and am proud of. But my superiors felt having a Lt. Colonel on your staff was a bit much. They requested your Federation make me a warrant officer and place my military career on reserve status."
"Well, that's because Starfleet isn't a military organisation... and this department certainly isn't either. you'll want to go to deck thirty two for that." S'hib quipped as he continued sipping at the hot juice inside his mug. "I'm S'hib..." He snorted softly as he lowered his mug to just above waist height and clicked off into the depth of security, heading for his office. "That was your queue to follow by the way." He huffed loudly as he vanished around a corner.
The reply Lia got surprised her, "Perhaps you should have joined the Marines, and by the way. I'd catch up S'hib, he doesn't like to be kept waiting." She pointed down to where her 2i/c had gone, "I'd listen to him, he knows what he's talking about."
Rhen fixed his uniform and went after S'hib. "I believe you and the Chief lack the knowledge that where I come from is a militaristic royal monarchy. I serve a King even though he is nothing but a dog and a halfwit. But I spent the past year on his latest envoy familiarizing myself on your Federation and your odd methods. Till I was assigned to be your investigation officer." He realized he was rambling. "In short all I'm saying being part of your unit will take some time getting used to."
Stifling a laugh, Lia pointed to where S'hib had gone. "Then S'hib is just the guy to teach you all about this place, really he learned a lot quickly."
Rhen quickly caught up to S'hib. "Am I to assume you are going to be training me, Sir?" He asked.
Silence befell the office after Rhen spoke, just the gentle clink of a mug being placed down as S'hib slowly rounded his desk and took a moment to sit down. "That would be correct." He replied lazily, frowning at the terminal slowly raising out of the desk as though mocking him for also doing the same to Rhen.
Rhen placed his arm behind his back the medals on his military uniform glistening in the light. "I must say I heard the stories of Sequus never thought I see one in person especially wearing clothes, must have taken some getting used to."
"What makes you think I'm used to it?" S'hib snorted, finally turning to face the man. "I'm proud to wear it, sure. but used to it? no, it comes off at every opportunity."
Rhen's eyebrow raised slightly before sitting down placing his military cap on his lap. "Whatever makes you feel comfortable, Commander." Resting his elbows on the armrests and interlacing his fingers the new Investigator. "So when does this hazing commence?"
"You might be disappointed to learn, that's now how we do things here," S'hib remarked as his terminal finally came to life, the Starfleet logo flashing onscreen for a moment before fading and revealing a stripped-down LCAR's
"There are however rules and regulations you will need to follow, the documents of which will be sent to your quarters alongside your uniform. I suggest you read them as soon as you can."
"Yes, I read over these rules and regulations already however during my observations of interacting with Humans upon my tenure on Earth. I notice they occasionally tend to welcome new members of their organization with 'pranks' they call it." Rhen seemed rather displeased of this practice. "I find it rather annoying and despise such antics."
"They don't just do it to new people, it's just a thing they do sometimes... but, just like these clothes I despise, it's something you'll have to learn to deal with." S'hib replied as he lazily tapped and swiped on his terminal, idly bringing up the man's records.
"I suppose it is the neighborly thing to do we must learn to share this Galaxy together." Rhen leaned back in his seat. "Sadly not all see it that way."
"No, but we also won't impose our ideals either, no matter how great we think they are... they must make the choice themselves," S'hib remarked as he glossed over Tal's record's
"So... a security investigator, should make my life easier having you aboard. especially with how limited my time is per report."
The idea of a military man like himself being reduced to a mere Security goon didn't settle well with Rhen but these Federation types were strange. "Yes, well let's hope there are some issues worth my time and present a good challenge."
"I can understand you feeling that way, but I'd rather there be no issues or good challenges," S'hib remarked as he finished tapping on his screen, finally turning his full attention to Tal. "Especially for this department. Because that usually means its at the expense of the crew or the civilians aboard."
"Isn't that why there are those like you here for that sort of thing? To go handle the petty squabbles and stolen candy?" Rhen asked things certainly was different than the Royal Military Police he served in back home.
"I can assure you, Warrant Officer..." S'hib snorted as he sat up, his towering presence still very much there despite being seated.
"If the rest of my career is filled with petty squabbles and stolen candy, then I will retire someday having experienced far more than you..." He added, his eyes boring into Rhen. "And I don't say that out of pride either."
His words struck out from his lips like a phaser set to stun, rending the room into silence for but a moment.
"You are dismissed, report back tomorrow at zero eight hundred. I'm sure we'll find something... exciting for you to do."
Rhen placed his cap back on before raising an eyebrow. "We shall see..." With that he saluted the commander and turned on his heel walking out.
