Chief Petty Officer Sean Conner O'Keefe stood in front of the security crewmen he would be supervising. He had made it clear that they were to report for a quick mandatory meeting so he could introduce himself. Also there was his supervisor, Senior Chief Petty Officer Fernando De La Rosa. Sean had found out through the grapevine that his supervisor was the husband of the nurse with whom O'Keefe had flirted during his boarding checkup. Just his luck. There was also an officer, a gorgeous Lieutenant JG Balfour. Her bright green eyes drew Sean's attention often during this meeting.
"Good morning crew," O'Keefe began. "I woul' first like to introduce meself as yer new supervisor. I am Chief Petty Officer Sean O'Keefe. I will be ensurin' that security operations runs smoothly. Afore each shift, there will be an informational meetin' to fo'ward information from the previous shift. It will be 'eld 'ere. I will lead the meetin' afore first an' second shift, with the shift leader reportin' to the third."
O'Keefe paused, taking a moment to take in those gorgeous green eyes before continuing, "Duty assignments will go out each mornin'. Be sure to check each day, as it may 'ave changed. There will be 'ell to pay if I see someone out o' there assigned duty. We must ensure the security o' the Elysium. Because of this, we will 'ave random drills. Be sure to respond, if yer assigned an' call fer backup. Remember to keep safety as a min'set. Yer safety is impor'ant too."
He hoped his supervisor didn't know he was flirting with his wife. Sean didn't know at the time she was married. He was just being himself. O'Keefe looked at those green eyes again, wondering if they belonged to anyone. "I will be checkin' the weapons locker daily, as well as the firearm deployment log. Be sure to keep the inventory and log up to date."
He paused one last time, then asked. "Any questions?" No one had any, so Sean stated, "Okay! Dismissed! An' lets be careful out there!"
After the crewmen left the meeting, Sean turned his attention to De La Rosa and the Lieutenant. “Thank ye fer bein’’ere fer support. I’m sure ye ‘Ave ‘eard a thing or two ‘bout me last post. I assure ye, I know me place. I’ll do ye good!”
Fernando nodded, giving no indication of he knew of Sean's flirting or not. "As long as you do that, we'll have no issues. Besides your part of the Elysium family now." Fernando replied civilly
“Thank ye!” O’Keefe replied. “Iffin ye receive any complaints from the staff, be strai’foward wit me. I woul’ like ta grow ‘ere.”
He glanced at the Lieutenant, then back to de la Rosa. “W’at’s ‘er story,” he asked, attempting to whisper, but not quiet enough. “Is she single?”
Fernando nodded, " Rest assured I will." At O'Keeffe's question he smiled and shook his head, "No. Lt. Balfour is involved with Lt. Danvers from Flight Control."
Sean shook his head. The first sexy lady he had met, his and Fernando’s CO, ended up being married to the ships XO. The sexy redhead he flirted with explained she was married. Later that evening, checking the ships manifest, O’Keefe realized she was married to Fernando, O’Keefe’s direct report. Now this beautiful lady was taken. The only single lady he had met was Ensign Sr’au, who was becoming like a sister to him.
“Ye’ll hafta I introduce me ta a single lady sometime,” O’Keefe jested. “I’m sure there are plenty aboard. I jes’ havn’ met them yet.”
His thoughts turned to after shift. “What’re ye doin’ aft duty?” O’Keefe asked his supervisor. “I ‘ave a nice bot’le o’ Slainte. Per’aps ye’d like ta join me?”
Fernando nodded, " I will go home to Heather and Cody. However, I believe a drink or two sounds like a good idea as well."
“We’ll then,” O’Keefe stated, “af’ shift’ I’ll meet ye in Ten Forward. I’ll bring the good stuff.”
Sean glanced at Lieutenant Balfour and shook his head, “Too bad she’s taken!”
Fernando shook his head and smiled, "Now, now O'Keefe, you'll find someone just be patient."
“It be a lon’ time ou’ there witou’ a love!” O’Keefe answered. He shrugged his shoulders. “A’ leas’ I ‘ave weapons an’ whiskey ta lean back on.”
"Two out of three isn't bad." Fernando observed with a grin. "Though if you don't handle them carefully as well, they will get you in as much trouble as dealing with a woman."
O’Keefe chuckled at the wisdom de la Rosa shared. “Aye! I’ll be remembrin’ that!” After a short pause, O’Keefe asked, “‘ow ‘as yer time been on the Elysium?”
"I've enjoyed my time here very much. The crew are all professional and friendly, you feel like you are part of a big family. Captain, excuse me Commodore Lalor is an excellent commander. Commander Taylor is a good department head as well."
“Good! I ‘ope ye don’ min’,” O’Keefe continued, “I plan ta live it up on me off du’y”
"I don't mind." Fernando replied, "As long as what you do off duty doesn't carry over to your duty shift. Then we have a problem."
“No worries,” Sean promised. “I take me du’y seriously. It’s w’at me da woul’ wan!”
"Your father sounds very wise O'Keefe. You would do well to follow his advice." Fernando observed.
“Aye,” Sean solemnly observe. “Me older brothers, Joe an’ Liam, followed ‘is path inta secur’ty at Daystrom.”
Fernando nodded his head in approval. "Daystrom, you say? Impressive, most impressive. Why didn't you follow them?"
Sean became more solemn. “Me da’s last words ta me were to look aft me Lil’ Sis. When Megs went ta the Academy, I signed up fer Starfleet. We served on the Sun Tzu toge’her. Then, she got all up ta high do an’ gave me a tongin’, then transferred off the ship. Said I was was a dossier an’ tol’ me ta eff off. I was gobsmacked! Aft’ all I do’ fer ‘er!”
"I'm sorry about your father." Fernando answered quietly before continuing, "As for your sister. Sounds like nothing more than a sibling argument. Where she wants to live her life her way. My advice, leave it alone. She'll come back when she's ready. You are still her brother and you nor she can ever change that."
“Aye,” Sean admitted, “we are fam’ly. Our fam’ly sticks toge’her.” Sean showed an appreciative smile towards his supervisor. “We’ll, I bes’ be gettin’ ta work.”
"Certainly, it was good taking with you and O'Keefe, don't let this eat at you." Fernando advised.
“Nae,” O’Keefe replied with a grin, “it won’ ‘under me.” The Master at Arms then walked away to make a round.
