Mattias, Miran and Tristi were busy setting the table for dinner. They wanted it to be a surprise for Phoenix, for when she got home. Once they were finished, Mattias smiled as he looked over the elegantly set table. "We did a great job, ladies!" He gave each of them a nod of appreciation. "Thank you both for your help. Why don't you go get freshened up for dinner."
Miran nodded and headed off, she was a lot more quieter since their return.
Tristi watched her go and looked at Mattias. "She is still pretty steamed about Triston."
Mattias sighed softly and nodded. "She has had a thing for him for a long time." He stepped over to Tristi as he spoke, lowering his voice some more. "Do me a favor, Tris? Don't give her any grief about it?"
"I haven't and I won't." She replied with a small smile. "Though that said, I cannot promise for others who have noticed she is without her normal protector."
He looked over at Tristi, his brows furrowed slightly. "Who are you referring to?" Mattias was starting to feel protective for his sister-in-law. They didn't live in the slums on some backwater world, but in the flagship of the Obsidian Fleet and one of the most advanced ships ever built.
"Raye told me that before Triston came, Miran was seen as a prize by several of the older boys. You know, date the captain's sister, your parents may get promoted."
This made Mattias growl noticeably. "Which...boys?" He asked through clenched teeth. He would not allow anyone to use his family as prizes of any kind.
Tristi shrugged. "Not sure, I am rather ignored by them. I am going to grab a shower," she turned and headed up the stairs.
Nodding to her, Mattias responded. "Okay sweetheart. And thank you for telling me about what's going on." He was going to have a talk with Phoenix tonight, after dinner. He didn't want to put Miran on the spot or make her feel uncomfortable or unsafe in her home. But rest assured, he would find out who these jackals were, and he would have a little...chat with them.
The main door opened and Phoenix walked in with a tired smile. "Ah there is a sight for tired eyes"
Mattias turned and tried to clear his mind of the anger that was in it and put on his best smile for the woman he loved. "We thought it would be nice to have a nice family dinner, Phee."
"With knives on the table.. are you sure Miran won't go for Tristi?"
Shaking his head, Mattias replied. "Not anymore. They seem to have finally called a truce, starting to act like a family."
She raised an eyebrow. "We shall see how long that lasts. Until some handsome young ensign comes along that both of them want. Then we will have issues."
Her words caused him to clench his jaw reflexively as he remembered what Tristi had just told him. "Trust me. we won't be the ones having issues."
Phee studied him. "What is going on Mattias?"
Looking at the staircase that led up to the bedrooms, Mattias turned and led Phoenix into the den. Once they were inside, he closed the door, then told her everything that Tristi had told him. He also stated that, for dinner, there would be no talk about this, for Miran's sake.
Phee nodded. "Knew about that a while ago, When Triston first came on board, he put a stop to it. He was still at school then."
"I won't allow some snot-nosed little shit to use Miran as a status symbol or a tool with which to climb higher in the social world!" He growled angrily.
"Darling, she is 17 and knows better than to believe people at face value. She may seem unprotected, but she isn't." She kissed him gently. "I taught her how you taught me to use blades."
First, Phoenix's kiss started to calm Mattias, then her words actually made him smirk. "Oh?" He asked softly. "Well then, if she's half as good as you are, then I pity the fool who tries his luck with her." He slid his arms around her waist and chuckled. "Ya know, you could've led with that little tidbit. Or do you enjoy seeing my fire start to rise?"
"I like your passion." She smiled as she went willingly into his arms. "More so when you focus it on me."
He arched his right eyebrow. "Well, on that front, I will always have an over abundance of passion for you, my Queen." He kissed her deeply.
Phoenix kissed him back, enjoying their time.
"Oh get a room!" Miran's voice filled with disgust echoed around them. "I thought we were having dinner?"
As their kiss broke, Mattias chuckled softly. "Well, Miran, as your sister is the commanding officer of this ship, we have every room." He gave her a playful wink as he dipped Phoenix and kissed her again.
"UGH!" The teenager sniffed and stalked back out to the dining area.
Phee was laughing even as she returned Mattias's kiss. "She is so easy to annoy these days."
Mattias grinned happily as he stood his wife back up. "You think she'll ever get used to us?"
"She needs a boyfriend" Phee said under her breath. "But probably not."
"Yeah, someone who is equally fearful of the both of us," he replied with a feral grin. Then, he said, "Come on, let's go eat dinner."
She laughed and let him pull her out of the study to the dining table
Miran was already seated, and the twins in their high chairs were beside her.
Tristi came down the stairs a bit slower than normal but she took her seat without comment.
Mattias noticed and he asked her gently, "Everything okay, Tristi?"
"Yeah just had a message from my teacher. She wants to review my last assignment."
"Did she say why?" He knew that she was struggling a bit, as she was behind where she would have been had she been at school her whole childhood.
"No" Came Tristi's reply as they began to serve themselves dinner.
Phoenix studied her face. "Do you want one of us to come with you to see her?"
Tristi shook her head. "No thank you."
Mattias gave Phoenix a quiet look. He knew that there had already been one teacher that had been dismissed from the Elysium, an elementary education teacher. He hoped this wasn't a similar situation.
Phoenix merely returned the look and let the subject drop. Tristi had to come to them with her problems and they could not force it.
Miran ate silently, and kept her head down.
The twins were eating their current favorite food of fish fingers which was easy for them to eat without help, though they were making a massive mess.
Mattias smiled as he looked over his family. He would kill to protect each one of them. He would also willingly give his life to keep each one of them safe. They were his and he was theirs. Until the very end.
