ON:
Consul Andrinn Orin was sitting in the Command Cabin, catching up on the paperwork that he had from the previous few days. There wasn't a lot of paperwork for him or the Diplomatic Corps, as there hadn't been much in regards to first contact or diplomatic situations coming up over the first few days of making landfall on this barren planet.
Looking up from the paperwork on his PADD in his hand, Andrinn took a moment to look around at the various people coming and going from the Command Cabin. He realized that a lot was happening around the scenes that he wouldn't have noticed unless he was actually looking up and around. Andrinn knew that the marines were doing some runs and making sure that everyone in the camp was safe, as well as scouting out the planet for various resources that could be used to make the ship safe again or could help with survival in general. Sam had gone on one of those missions and came back nearly freezing to death.
Andrinn made sure that Sam knew better next time, but Andrinn didn't tell Sam how absolutely scared that he was.
This whole mission was something that reminded Andrinn of so much that has happened in the past few centuries within both the Federation and Starfleet alike. Andrinn was around when the whole Xindi incident happened for the United Earth Starfleet, as well as the Earth/Romulan War. Back then, there was so much uncertainty that nobody knew how their small part of the galaxy would turn out, especially Andrinn and the rest of the Trill homeworld.
A young Attache came up to Andrinn and handed him a PADD with some information about a few of the remaining diplomats that he hadn't heard much from over the last few days. It appeared that most of them were safe and had come down to the planet, but there were a handful of Diplomatic Protection Team Members that were killed in the line of saving the diplomats onboard the ship.
Andrinn waved the young officer off before thinking about the fact that he would have to write their families letters letting them know that their family member had passed away in the line of duty. Andrinn hated the moment where he had to do stuff like this, but he knew how important it was.
Thinking back to the time that his first love passed away, Andrinn thought about how his father was the one that sent the letter to the parents of this young man. Looking up for a moment, Andrinn whispered to himself, "What would you do dad?"
From behind him, Andrinn heard someone say, "Just rip the bandage off."
Turning around and taking a look to see who said that, it was the young attache that Andrinn had shooed off mere moments prior. Andrinn smiled, even if he was slightly annoyed because the officer hadn't moved off enough to ease out of the range of Andrinn speaking.
The young officer stepped forward, where Andrinn saw that he was wearing a winter suit to cover himself from the various elements from outside. The attache said, "Sir, if it were me, I'd just rip the bandage off and go ahead to write the letter to the family. But, that's just me, sir."
Andrinn kept a neutral face before replying, "Well, it's not that simple." The young officer replied, "But, isn't it though? While life and death are equally complex, writing a letter shouldn't be. Just tell the family what happened and how you're truly feeling right now. They'll understand."
Andrinn couldn't help but smirk at this young man for a second. He was so young and naive about what was happening in the universe. He was so full of optimism and hadn't seen the universe quite like Andrinn had. But, the reverse was also true. Andrinn hadn't seen the universe like this young man had. With a little sigh, Andrinn said, "Thank you for that. That actually means a lot to me young man. Now, if you don't mind, I have a letter to write."
The young man simply nodded before heading out of the Command Cabin and Andrinn was alone with his thoughts for a moment. However, it didn't take long for Andrinn to say, "Computer, begin recording a letter to Mr and Mrs Rogers."
