A Moment of Reflection

Posted on Sun Nov 19th, 2023 @ 6:13am by Captain Gary Taylor

Mission: MISSION 0 - History Speaks
Location: Gary and Lia's Quarters
Timeline: Present
540 words - 1.1 OF Standard Post Measure

Gary sat in the office as Alicia and Lia spoke about Lia's recent time in the brig and her feelings regarding that, Phoenix and possibly himself. As well as what led to Lia's being placed in the brig and her current feelings. He hoped Lia would open up to Alicia and speak on what led her to this point. For himself, he was tired. He was tired of the arguing or the seamless, going round and round about this situation. That he loved Lia was not in doubt. He loved her fiercely however it was hard to have a normal, warm and loving relationship with this hanging over their heads and trying to ignore it was proving beyond difficult.

As he sat in his self-imposed isolation to Alicia and Lia privacy to talk, a song came to mind. "Computer, play The Long and winding Road by the Beatles." An instant later the fab Four's voices filled the room.

The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to you door
The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here?
Let me know the way
Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried
Anyway, you'll never know
The many ways I've tried
And still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door
But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago
Don't keep me waiting here
Lead me to your door

As the song played, Gary thought. He thought on Lia's frustration and anger. How she felt he looked down at her and how she felt he had deserted her, let her down in this damn situation. Had he let her down? No, he hadn't he thought fiercely. Lia couldn't see or maybe she didn't want to see, nor could she separate the fact that she had broken Federation law and procedure. He and Phoenix would have down the same thing if Phoenix's husband Mattias had done the same thing. Lia wasn't being singled out despite her feelings to the contrary.

He drummed his fingers on the desktop, his fingers tapping out a staccato rhythm as he continued to think. He didn't look down at her or view her as a failure. She made a mistake and had been punished for it. As far as he was concerned it was over and done with. What he wished more than anything was this whole sorry affair to be over, that they could move beyond this and get on with their lives.

The song concluded and Gary was no closer to having an answer to letting Lia know she hadn't disappointed him. His love was as strong and as consistent at the North Star. He could only keep stressing the fact and hope that the message would sink in, and Lia would believe it and him. One thing was for certain, he would never desert Lia.

Don't you just hate having a troublesome wife, and Gary has one. But the guy just keeps on going, while his darling wife keeps on pressing the self destruct button. A nicely written mission post by Jeff which explains Gary's frustration.
