DECK TWELVE – INTENSIVE CARE UNIT #3

Adelaide could hear people and movement around her long before she could open her eyes. Her eyelids felt so heavy. She would try to open them and then she would fall back asleep. The sedation that was administered was quite effective.

She tried to open her eyes again, she wondered how long she was ‘out’ now. How many times had she come so close to waking up and then fallen back into unconsciousness?

She tried to remember why she was here…oh yeah…got knifed. But it didn’t hurt any longer. Oh wait…now it does. It just feels a little bit sore.

She felt a little bit cold. That’s when she realized that underneath the sheet, she was stark nude. Someone was there with her. They were nearby. Working. This person came closer, and Adele stirred and opened her eyes. She saw Senior Chief Petty Officer Emily Charles, one of the nurses. She said something but Adele just weakly smiled and managed to say, “I’m cold”. Soon, a nice, thick blanket was being unfolded and she didn’t feel so cold.

“That feels so good. Thank you…” she said. She tried to say it. She hoped she did because she was truly thankful.

Had she fallen unconscious again? How long? She was in the same place and she was aware that time had passed. Her mouth felt like cotton. “More…??? Please…???” she managed. Someone came over and gave her a nice, cool drink. It was something cool and bubbly. It tickled her and it made her smile. She grimaced as she laid back and opened her eyes. It was bright here. Oh? It still must be ‘day watch’. She looked at her bed. It was slightly in the upright angle. She heard the biobed giving soft beeps. She heard a man talking. She listened as he spoke and while she could hear him talking; he wasn’t speaking to her. He was with the nurse at the nurse’s station. She recognized him as Lieutenant Commander Savar. She knew that he was one of the Counseors aboard the ship. But she thought that he specialized in trauma. So what was he doing here? Certainly it couldn’t be for her. He was speaking with a nurse. There was another person here. Security it looked like.

She put her hand to her head and relived the awful moment. She saw Captain Woolheater. He was sitting there, in a chair, on Deck Ten. But something was wrong. He wasn’t himself. She looked at his eyes, they were white and rolled back. His eyelids were slightly open and just the whites of his eyes were peeking through. She tilted her head and wondered if he was having some kind of mild seizure?

She touched him, on the shoulder, ~ Sam?~ she asked.

Then he moved, rose, leaned forward and leapt at her with such amazing speed. She felt something hot go into her left side of her chest. What could be hot? She saw the knife and immediately felt weak in the knees. She looked into Woolheater’s face and it was Sam again. It was him. He was awake now. And he looked so terrified and so guilty.

The floor of deck ten felt good. It felt solid and cool. She couldn’t keep her eyes open but she knew Sam was there. She knew other people were there. Alicia was there. She felt her hands on her and near her wound applying pressure. She could feel Sam there too. He was calling out for help. ~Medics are coming….they’re coming~… Adele heard him say.

She reached for his hand, ~It’s OK. Sam? It is OK. ~ she felt like she needed to calm him down. She heard other people now. Then she was out.

And now she was here. Her eyes were open and things were becoming less foggy. “What time is it?” she asked.
