Mission: Episode 1: Hell is a four letter word
Location: Main Medical Bay
Timeline: MD2- 09h00
1283 words - 2.6 OF Standard Post Measure

The first place Evelyn wanted to review was the Ships Medical contingent. She sent a message to the CMO at 07h00 informing him, that she and her aides would be in Medical at 09h00 to conduct a review of the space and his team.

Now, at 09h00 on the dot, Evelyn Mountbatten, Commodore in rank, swept into the Medical bay, her aides right behind her.

Sthilg and his staff had done there best to make sure the medbay was spotless, everything fully stocked, the medical animals all cleaned and feed and everything would be ready for inspection. The gorn had just replicated a new coat that he'd pulled over his uniform before waiting at the entrance for the Commodore. Time to get this over with he thought as his staff took their places.

Evelyn moved towards the Gorn. "Commander. Or would you prefer Doctor?" She queried.

" Doctor will do fine Commodore." the gorn replied calmly.

"Good. Now, I have heard much about your team. Please show me around?"

"Of courssse. " The gorn said as he lead the way. " On the left, you have my own personal office and jussst opposssite isss are medicle ssstorage area. Fully ssstocked with everything we need. " The gorn said as he lead the way into one of the two waiting rooms. From there he stepped into the main room where his staff was standing by. " and here is where isss work is done."

"Doctor," Percy cut-in suddenly. "Are you fully capable of attending to the medical needs of this crew?" The young aide looked up and down the bulk of the gorn, making his unspoken point of the alien's unusual physical properties clear.

The gorn turned to look at the ginger-haired lieutenant commander. " I am fully qualified to operate on every ssspecies that inhabitsss thisss ssship with every issssue from battlefield injuriesss to birthing. Jussstsss asss i have been doing for over four hundred years. " He said calmly.

Estelle might have had a witty comeback to it all, but it was 0900 and her shift started at 1600. As was usual for her at 0900 without an emergency, she was in bed.

Evelyn nodded. "Yes, I have read your file. It is very interesting. And how do you find the crew on this vessel? Do they give you issues with their physicals?"

"The crew of the Elysssium are sssome of the bessst in the fleet. I have no issue treating any of them including the physssicals. " The gorn said calmly.

"And the team you have, do they meet your requirements?"

"I have had no problemsss with my team. I am confident that we can handle any tasssk needed of usss." The gorn responded.

Just as the question was asked, they came by a locker that was marked with 'In case of inspection, open this door' put on in beautifully ornate handwriting that looked like a few hundred years old. Inside, there was a box of red pills that read 'to treat craniophallic anastomosis, take one pill with each meal for two days', and stuffed behind was a tyrannosaurus-shaped porcelain pot, the Tea-Rex, which Estelle had last used on the desk of the main office, and which someone had hid from her in this very locker.

Commodore Mountbatten looked at the box. "Well.. Commander? Can you explain this?"

"One of my ssstaff ssshowing her sssenssse of humor sssir." The gorn replied calmly. " Nothing that will affect the medical ssstaff ablity to work."

Percy sighed quietly as he lifted his PADD to begin typing again. Are the medical staff under your command always afforded such a wide latitude for unprofessional behavior, Doctor? I shudder to think how they would act when not under an official inspection such as this."

Yawning and stretching, Estelle walked into sickbay at that moment, overhearing the question. "Good morning", she greeted. "When we're not being inspected, we're often up to our elbows inside other people, so the only time we can be unpr..." she stopped herself, then saw her teapot. "You found it!" she exclaimed, grabbing it and dusting it off. "I was wondering where my Tea-Rex had wandered off to. Thank you!"

Evelyn frowned. "And you are?"

"Estelle Hertz", she smiled. "Ship's Surgeon." She extended her hand to Evelyn. "You must be the inspector that's been announced. It's good you're here. I think someone took this and hid it from me, so I'm glad you've uncovered its hiding place. You see, while I'm usually a coffee person, towards the end of my shift I prefer tea, and using the same pot every day enhances the flavour. This one's made so that when I put it on the desk, no matter how much the ship should suddenly shake due to unforeseen circumstances, nothing will spill out."

Commodore Mountbatten noted the name. "That would be Lieutenant Commander Hertz correct? I am Commodore Mountbatten and yes I am here to assess this ship and its crew." She didn't however shake the offered hand. "As head surgeon, do you often misplace items?"

Commander Lovejoy stood behind the Commodore and stood silently waiting for an answer from Hertz.

"Oh, occasionally", Estelle said. "It's why I make sure everything's fitted so it won't come loose. I'm still waiting for whichever patient will come back complaining of a ticking noise, as I can't seem to locate my wristwatch at the moment."

"I do hope, Commander, that, that is your way of joking, because I find it hard to believe that there would be such incompetence in this department." Commodore Mountbatten replied.

Lovejoy shook his head at the lack of respect shown by the Elysium officers to the Commodore.

"Of course it is", Estelle smirked. "It's most of what I do, if there's not an emergency. I keep everyone on their toes because they're expecting a crack from me at any opportunity. It also helps keep everyone sane around here. Just last week, we were helping the citizens on Cortic and pulling two-day shifts with four hours of sleep in between. Might not be all that tough on a Vulcan but I lost four kilos." She didn't mention the part where that was largely due to not eating because she was so worried about Liorga, she couldn't keep anything down. "No, we're in great shape around here, professionally speaking. I have yet to meet a crewmember I can make a complaint about." Again, not the whole truth, but she had made peace with Kara, and at any rate wasn't going to throw her under the bus even if they hadn't come to an understanding.

Mountbatten looked at Lovejoy and Albright to see if they had any other questions.

Lovejoy shook his head. He had questions but he decided he wouldn't get straight answers or be met with more hostility the crew of the Elysium was showing them.

The gorn chief MD was annoyed at this whole situation. The inspection and his chief surgeon being late for it were both getting to him though he didn't show it. " Commodore, commandersss. I am a rather long-lived individual who hasss been practicing medicine for over four hundred yearsss. There is no team I'd rather work with than the medical staff of the Elysssium. Their quirks might take sssome getting usssed to but there is no finer medical ssstaff in the whole of Ssstarfleet or the federation. The mother of a usss all would be proud of them all." The gorn said his words showing he was serious even through his species speech habit.

Evelyn nodded and her PADD beeped. "Thank you Commander, for the tour. We have to move on unfortunately." She collected her aides with a look. "Thank you again." And she left the medical bay.
