Sthilg was a happy lizard. Anyone could tell, even without the big lizard wolfing down the last of his soup with some homemade corn bread. Running his hand under the sterilizer, he looked at the list of things that needed to be done.
A Camryn Shepard needed her medical checkup. Smiling to himself, the lizard retrieved his coat and headed for the waiting area. He had work to do.
Running a hand through her blonde hair, Cam exhaled loudly while passing the crew along the corridor. Some acknowledged her. However, she barely looked at them. Stressed and riddled with body aches, she worked on constant repairs and maintenance of the Elysium's systems. For a ship like the Elysium, the bowels and the inner workings require constant upkeep. Fortunately for her, they had a great engineering team working twenty-four seven. Soon, the headache she received would eventually lessen.
Approaching the medical, the door hissed open as she walked into the waiting room. She paused in her steps, watching a Gorn in medical uniform approach. For a second, she didn't know whether to fall back into the fight or flight response. Filtering through her headspace, she remembered reading that the Elysium manifest had a medical officer as a Gorn. Clearing her throat, she vanquished all thoughts and offered a hand, palm open, "Hello. Camryn Shepard, Lieutenant Junior Grade. Reporting for a medical, sir. I probably need one soon anyways."
" Nice to meet you Ssshepard. " Sthilg replied warmly not even batting an eye at the woman's reaction to him. The old lizard extended his arm for a shake.
Hearing his attempt at pronouncing her last name, Cam smiled, accepting his handshake. It felt warm and leathery in her grasp. As part El Aurian, her people "listens" to other races. However, social anxiety grips her whenever people want to talk to her. Being open to talking and listening to others is important to her, but she prefers to listen to scans and deep, dark space. Opening her mouth, she spoke, "Yeah. Havent been a minute since Ive been on this vessel, maintaining and repairing consoles. I'm the assistant to the chief engineer."
She wasn't a fan of titles. Who's in charge? If she reports to the chief of engineering and she's the assistant to the chief, she assists and leads a group of engineers.
" Ssso let'sss get you ssseen to. Have you had any medical incident sssince you last ssscan which are not on your file?" the big lizard responded as he gave her a warm smile.
Camryn thought for a bit before replying, "No other medical issues aside from burnt hands and sore backs from working." Placing her hands together, she cracked her knuckles and followed him to begin her medical review. It would be interesting to get to know him a little bit.
" Very good. If you'll follow me we'll get you ssseen to. " He said leading the way into his office. It smelt of the home baked cornbread giving it a homely feel as the lizard tapped the bio bed. " Let'sss get you ssseen to."
Camryn sniffed the air of his office. It smelled distinct and warm. Maybe buttery. She sat on the bio bed, taking out PADD. Pressing a few icons, she flipped over the reports and maintenance issues assigned to her by the chief. For a ship this size, the issues were massive.
" Sssorry for the sssmell in cassse it'sss bothering you." The gorn said as he stared up the scanner. " Just finissshed my lunch and i'm not going to missssss my home made cornbread."
Camryn shrugged, offering a smile while not noticing the scanner, "I love homemade cornbread. And anything homemade. I miss them, especially when most of my mission takes me to deep space. Several of my service record involved being in listening stations, so it gets lonely and boring with replicated meals."
" Well there sssome in the food canissster if you'd like sssome." sthilg warmly as he gestured his head to the container.
She thought for a bit, allowing him to check her out for medical stuff and inquired, "If you don't mind my asking. Where are you from? It's not often I see a Gorn in my travels. "
" The Haax sssyssstem. " the gorn said with a hint of pain in his voice. " A sssmall world of dussst usssed by the gorn hegemony asss a ssship breaker world. There wasss a viral outbreak which killed mossst of the population. I'm the only survivor by now. "
Camryn nodded, "Sorry. Didn't mean to pry." She sat on the bio bed, scanning the PADD.
" It'sss alright my dear everyone asssksss eventualy." He awnsred with the same warm smile upon his face. " What about you, where are you from?"
Cam thought for a bit before responding, "Hmm, well. Born in space. I don't really have a homeworld. Tho, we tended to travel from frontier colony to the next. Being born a hybrid Klingon and El Aurian back then, its hard to find some roots. I like to travel to new places."
" Any idea which houssse your klingon side comesss from?" Sthilg enquired. " I did ssserve nearly a hundred yearsss in the KDF. I may have run into one of your anchestorsss."
Camryn shrugged, nodding, “You probably wouldn’t. My other half is of the Ra’An House. They are not well known but they are scholars and historians. Lore-masters. They are an important part of Klingon society and tolerant of outsiders”
" Sssadly i never met anyone with that name." The gorn said, tapping the desk slightly as his white eyes read the incoming data.
Camryn nodded, letting him do the work. She watched him tap the desk, inquiring, "So, anything new from the crew medical? Am I good to go?"
The gorn overlooked the results with his white eyes before he gave her a warm smile. " I sssee no reassson not to declare you fit for duty."
She smiled, offering a nod, "Thank you. It was nice meeting you."
" I'll sssee you around the ssship." Sthilg said warmly.
