715 words - 1.4 OF Standard Post Measure

The very next morning, Caden appeared at the cell with his legal PADD. "Commander, good morning. I have been granted time with you in the interview room." He waved a hand and a security officer came forth and escorted Savar to the interview room.

Savar lay on his cot. He wanted to be in his quarters with Alicia and their children. He wanted this nightmare over. He turned his head as Caden appeared. "Counselor, good morning." He replied as he sat and then stood up from the cot.

Caden nodded and they went to the Interview room together. "Have a seat commander" he said calmly. "We need to work on things."

Savar sat and waited in silence as Caden spoke on them working on things which he took to me his defense of the charges against him.

"I am going to be honest with you Commander. Its bad. And they have witnesses and video footage of you pushing a nurse into the jefferies tube and sealing the hatch behind you, after the death of Cadet Henderson. You didn't turn to help them in the video. You are seen leaving them behind." Caden said calmly. "So I need to know why you did it."

Savar sat stoically, silently as Caden addressed him, When the counselor had finished he spoke evenly. "The ship was being systematically attacked and destroyed yet video cameras remained operational? I find that very interesting. Furthermore, I have served this ship and crew loyally both in peace and in battle loyally for years and now I am being labeled and looked upon as coward and poor officer. Where is the presumed innocence? It appears my guilt has already been decided. It is your duty counselor to support and believe in me and my statement."

"So tell me everything that happened, slowly and clearly." Caden said. "And I will do my very best."

Savar began to speak, " I was safeguarding Lt. De La Rosa and ger children on deck 15, We had managed to stay a step ahead of the alien creatures as we made our way. It was slow going. We encountered the cadets at the time a group of creatures appeared only feet from us. I go Lt. De La Rosa and er children into a Jeffries tube but the distance between the cadets, out position and the Jeffries tube was too great. I could not save the cadets without sacrificing Lt. De La Rosa and her children. I regret my inability to save them."

"Well that's good, because it is being portrayed that you have no regrets about it." Caden said. "We can work with it."

"That is a wrong, terribly illogical and insensitive thing to say and allow to spread. I deeply regret my inability to be able to save all parties." Savar answered evenly but firmly.

Caden looked at him. "The Cadets have their own view of things Commander. If it had been you, would you not be upset, and concerned about this?"

"Counselor, I am not insensitive to the pain and loss the cadets are feeling. I would however make an effort to understand the reason behind any action." Savar answered evenly.

"You want me to tell the court that teenagers should make an effort to understand why they were left behind by a member of the crew?"

Savar stared at Caden. "I do not believe I said that counselor." His tone going noticeably cooler. "It was an impossible decision. A no win situation. As I have stated earlier. I wish I had been able to save everyone."

Caden was not sure if that would be sufficient. "The pre-trial hearing is tomorrow morning. I will ask for house detention. If approved, you will be escorted to your cabin and kept there until the main trial."

"Understood Mr.Tharos. I will await the decision on the motion for house detention." Savar paused for a moment and fixed Caden with a look. "I sense disappointment in my answers. I regret that especially as you are my legal counsel. But I have told you the truth concerning the incident in question."

Caden nodded. "I will go prepare. I suggest you get some sleep Commander." He stood, gathered his items and then left, and security entered to lead Savar back to his cell.
