Calista Haelant sat quietly in the interview room in the main brig. She had been given this charge by the Commodore to assess Savar's mental state. Now she was waiting for the brig officer to bring Savar to her.
A few moments passed before Savar entered the room. He made no outward reaction to seeing Calista as he sat down. His posture perfect. His hands resting atop the desk.
Calista watched the Vulcan carefully. "JAG and the Command Team have requested that you be evaluated Commander. Before the hearing. I am here to do that evaluation."
"I understand. A logical step. Proceed with your evaluation Lieutenant." Savar replied evenly.
"What are you feeling right now Commander" She asked straight to the point.
Savar turned his head to face Calista. "To feel is to imply emotion. As a Vulcan my emotions are repressed. Nonetheless I understand the nature of your question. I am feeling a myriad of feelings. Deep shame and humiliation that I am being looked at as a bad officer or coward by people I considered friends. Shame for Alicia as she must also deal with this. My career has also suffered from these charges. I am also anxious to have this behind me and resolved in a satisfactory manner. Waiting is most tedious."
"And your thoughts on the events that brought these charges? Do you feel anything about the events?"
Maintaining eye contact with Calista, Savar spoke slowly and evenly, "I confess I am mystified as to how these charges were brought against me as I was engaged in one of a Starfleet officer's highest duties. Assisting a fellow Starfleet officer and her infant children to safety."
"And do you feel anything about the cadets?" Calista was curious. His words were said calmly. And she was no telepath but she could see the emotions beneath the surface.
"I....I feel a sense of helplessness in that I was unable to assist the cadets but the distance between us was too great and leaving them would have left Lieutenant De La Rosa and her children unprotected and open to attack. I grieve at their losses I am relieved that there were marines close by to assist them."
"Did you know the Marines were there?" Calista asked.
"Not with a high degree of certainty, I knew with the the recent boarding of the alien invaders that roving patrols of marines would be circulating through the ship. I am extremely relieved and gratified to see that they were able to assist and save the cadets." Savar replied.
"So can you tell me, aside from the fact that you were protecting De La Rosa, what went through your mind when the cadets appeared and Cadet Henderson was killed?"
"What I thought?" Savar repeated, "I thought what a senseless loss of life. Killed by an alien creature who knew nothing about her, her life, her dreams. Yet, I knew if I had tried to save her. Lt. De La Rosa and her children would have died as surely as we are speaking."
"So the needs of the few?" Calista asked curiously. "Do you feel regret that you didnt stop to help?"
"I feel a great remorse in that I was unable to formulate a plan that would have saved Cadet Henderson as well as Lt. De La Rosa and her children. My inability will haunt me for the rest of my life." Savar answered.
Calista made a note. "And how are you handling the brig?"
Savar didn't answer right away, a few seconds ticked by before he spoke. "I am afraid not very well. It is not the most pleasant of circumstances or situations." He looked at Calista, "I miss my family."
"Have they visited?" Calista asked curious.
"No as as yet. Alicia is waiting to see if I will be released to house arrest." Savar answered evenly and softly.
"And how do you know that if she has not visited?"
Savar turned his head to look at Calista. "We share a bond counselor. We are able to feel each other and no man and woman know each other as well Alicia and I do."
Calista considered it for a moment then said "And how is she taking it?"
"She is naturally upset and concerned. Her love and support know bounds. She worries about me. She wishes me home and this whole affair behind us. She has not said so in words counselor but through her feelings and emotions. Which are quite vivid and sharp." Savar replied.
"Are you always linked?" Calista was curious.
"The link/bond Alicia and I share only became permanent when we agreed to be married and through mating." Savar
answered Calista.
"So she was in touch with you when this event happened?"
Savar shook his head. "The link is always active, Though that does not mean Alicia was in contact with me. In most cases it is as background noise. We feel each other. I cannot use Alicia to verify what I am telling you especially if she was dealing with a crisis of her own or just busy with other tasks."
Calista noted this. "Very well. Your wife will probably be questioned as well you know."
"I would expect nothing else counselor. It is a logical step." Savar answered.
"What else would be logical Commander in this process, that you would expect to happen?"
Savar didn't reply immediately as he thought on the question. After a few seconds he replied. "That I am released from the brig and sentence to house arrest pending a hearing or trial. That ideally that the Commodore dismisses the charges or failing that holds an Admiral's mast and declare me innocent." He looked at Calista, "I am not a bad officer or coward." He said simply.
Calista made a note. "And if you are found guilty?"
"Then it will be a terrible injustice." Savar answered simply.
She considered his response then said "And was what happened to those cadets an injustice?"
"No." He answered, "My actions bore no malice or ill will toward the cadets. It was to protect those I was already watching over."
"Very well. Do you have anything else you believe would be pertinent to this review?"
"I do not believe so Counselor. I have given you the pertinent facts I do however thank you for coming to see me even if it was for an evaluation."
"I will submit the evaluation to the JAG in a few hours." Calista stood. "I do hope you get the outcome you wish. Thank you for your time Commander."
"Thank you. I share your view that i am granted house arrest. In addition for calling me Commander. It is appreciated."
Calista left as security entered to escort him back to his cell.
