Debby Cardille, wealthy by birth and wealthier by marriage, had to give herself real credit for this one, somehow the phalanx of attorneys she'd hired for her son had managed to not only get his murder charge reduced to manslaughter but now to get it kicked out completely. She leaned back, sipping a glass of her favorite champagne, and began to speak to her lawyers, "Okay, Don, what's our next move?" She asked Donald Harlan, her son's lead attorney and her long time personal counsel, a privilege she paid over a million credits a year for, "How do we go about getting my granddaughter?"
"We've already filed for custody." Harlan replied, sipping kanar as he did, "But, I've got to tell you, it's going to be tough. Especially if the Federation's Attorney's Office re-files the manslaughter charge. And that's more a when than an if."
"Can we get her removed?" Debby asked, turning to look at Rico, who had fallen asleep in the limo, "We know some people, surely you do, if we can bring the pressure to bear on her boss, he'll take her off the case."
"And then they'll appoint someone else." Lia Chiang interrupted, she was relatively new and had never worked with the Cardilles before, "This case isn't going to just go away, Mrs. Cardille. Your son is accused of killing an SFMC officer, a pregnant one at that, they're not going to just let it go."
"Who is she?" Debby sighed.
"Lia Chiang, she's new to us." Harlan answered, "And, while she's impertinent, she's right. Debby, this case isn't going away. And it doesn't help us that this Gallia Norris is scrubbed in sunshine."
"What?" Debby groaned, she wasn't even sure what Don was talking about right now.
"She's a decorated Starfleet officer, the youngest Lieutenant Commander currently serving, possibly the youngest ever." Chiang began, "And she's also the only mother Tayalas has ever known..."
"Who the hell is Tayalas?" Debby raised an eyebrow, the name didn't ring any bells.
"That's your granddaughter, Debby." Harlan sighed, rubbing his forehead in frustration, she was a hard client to deal with sometimes.
"Oh, ugh, gonna have to change that." Debby said, a nasty sneer on her face, "What the hell kind of name is that anyway?"
"Andorian, ma'am." Lia answered, "For a famed Starfleet Captain who..."
Debby yawned, "I understand why my son is sleeping so well now, this woman is a bore. Don, just shut her up and get me my granddaughter from this Morris...."
"Norris." Lia corrected.
"Oh, whatever." Debby shrugged, pouring herself another glass of champagne, "Just make it happen, Don, and let's keep Encyclopedia Moronica here busy, huh?"
"However you want it, Debby." Harlan relented, motioning for Lia Chiang to not say anything else, it wouldn't do any good anyway.
