Location: Deck 18, Stellar Cartography
974 words - 1.9 OF Standard Post Measure
Sitting in the center of stellar cartography Abbey had set it to show the milky-way system to remind her of what stars looked like, she was bored and even though she loved her dad he was still a Marine and she didnt have anyone on board thay she had met yet to feed her creative scientific mind so she now often found herself wandering the halls of the Elysiums alone.
Nevada Shifted herself as she wandered through the Interconnected labs of the science Division, her old Earth Lab coat lightly Fluttering with her Rapid steps. Her Knees were Killing her, All the Tricks and Genetic illusions she had in place doing little to Alleviate her arthritis. She sighed quietly as she checked her Old fashioned watch, Willing for the Minute hand to Tick down faster. She paused just outside the Cartography her gaze shifting towards its sole Occupant. "Can I help you?" she asks her voice impassive.
As the woman voice behind her ruptured the silence Abbey jumped her heart racing, she hadn't expected to see anyone here especially when there were no stars to study or to chart. Standing, she turned to face the woman. Abbey had not seen her before but the Elysium was huge so it wasn't uncommon especially when she was just a civilian her crew interaction was at a minimum. "I'm sorry, I was just trying to find somewhere to clear my anxiety" She explained. "I can go" She added quickly.
The woman across from her looked young but her eyes told a different story they were experienced and wary, her father Luke had taught how to read someone mainly to perceive them as a threat than anything more but Abbey had learned what people were thinking and feeling in their facial expressions and body movements it was a handy trait to have so young.
Nevada Shook her head and sighed quietly. "No, you're fine..." she muttered and rubbed her brow. "We're not Running any Experiments with Cartography right now...." she paused and stepped into the lab. "I Never liked Looking down on the galaxy," she said softly. "I used to use Cartography labs to View the night skies on Worlds I'd never been too," she said quietly as she looked over the holographic Display of the Galaxy.
"That sounds dreamy" Abbey replied before flicking the image to something of that description. "My name is Abbey, my father is a Marine on board." She held out her hand to greet the scientist opposite her, "And I think one day I want to be a scientist."
"Do you know what kind of science you'd like to tackle?" Nevada asked as she stared up at the Holographic displays her Deep blue eyes Unwavering as she tried to track clusters she was familiar with.
Abbey took a moment to think, not willing to rush into her answer. Finally, once she had a response she said. “I like astronomy but I love botanical studies that being said I also like human anatomy so I don't know if I should look at medical too. I'm a little conflicted which is why I haven't put in my application yet. "
Nevada Chuckled. "I was a bit like you when I first Joined the fleet...Wanting a bit of everything, I eventually settled on Surgical and medical research," She hummed quietly. "Though I still practice Botany and Xenobotany on the side," she added with a soft chuckle.
"That doesn't help still," She said with a chuckle of her own, "There's just so many wonderous things out there I don't know how I'll ever choose, my father tells me that when it comes to it I'll make the right decision and it'll just be there staring me in the face." She bit her lip self-consciously. "Would you be ever willing to include me in any of your work? Like, an understudy? Maybe if I give it a try I'll see if I like it or not"
Nevada's brow furrowed slightly. "I can't include you in any of my medical research, but if you'd like I do have a Side project in Botany if you don't mind getting a little muddy," she said with a soft smile.
"I don't mind getting dirty!" Abbey said excitedly now even the slightest disappointed at the offer and that she wouldn't be able to be included in any medical research, her time would come. "So what is it?" She was grinning now like a Cheshire cat.
"I've been working on making A salsa garden in our arboretum using Fruits and Plants from all across the federation, all while getting them to grow Sympathetically in the same soil," Nevada said with a broad smile. "So far I'm having great success with Tellarite and Human plants growing together."
"That sounds delicious," Abbey said thinking about the idea and then added "But Vulcan and Andorian would be difficult their climates are vastly different and would require different soils. Interesting, maybe you could use a Biolistic delivery system, Take particles of heavy metal, to change what the crop requires to grow?"
Nevada chuckled. "How about you swing by The Arboretum Tomorrow around 1700?" she asks with a Gentle smile. "I'll show you what We've got going so far."
She nodded exuberance radiating across her small face clearly happy with the idea, "Yes! I will be there 1700" Abbey's smile was toothy and reminding herself she was trying to become a cadet was all she could do to stop herself from jumping up and down.
"I'll see you there then," Nevada said kindly as she turned to leave the Cartography lab.
"Thank you!" Abbey called out behind the science officer before turning back to take in a few more minutes of localized spaced before too turning to leave.
