Wandering the ship had become a bit of a hobby now for Abbey and even more so trying to find places she shouldn't be in and then getting into those places. One of those places was the office of temporal analysis she had heard about from some of the other teens on board, they were all boring and none nearly as interested in science as she was so she found her own company best kept. She had canvased the corridor outside the office for a few hours or so and had decided nobody was in, and the corridor which only also had the Computer core, maintenance control and maintenance room meant that there were very few... none in fact other people were around at this time.
Deciding it was now or never Abbey walked up to the door and pressed the door control panel which beeped negatively at her indicating it was locked. Biting her lip she reached up and typed in the security override code she had 'borrowed' from River during their day together, she hoped it wouldn't get the elasian security officer in trouble but some things were worth the risk.
The fact that they were in the middle of an incursion had Varis working overtime. In fact he barely left his office, and expected the same of his staff. Well what little staff he had. However, they eventually needed rest. Varis on the other had was used to having no rest. He sat with his hand over his lips as he leaned on his elbow. On his screen was a list of every possible thing that could go wrong and destroy the timeline. This was what he and his people were working on. It still was incomplete.
A small chime from the computer brought Varis to the here and now. His terminal indicated that someone had tried to open the locked door. Before he could register who it was the computer said that an Ensign River Lokaa was trying to come in using her access code, except that she did not have a high enough clearance. Varis smirked as a decision was reached. He had learned that he had a reputation for being a little odd and scary, it was time to live up to that reputation. "Computer turn off the lights." The computer obliged and the only glow was from the computer screen.
Varis walked toward the door and let them open, just wide enough so the person on the other side could see a countdown running on the computer screen. He looked down at the teen with an indifferent look. "Can I uh, help you? You seem to be lost?"
Abbey having felt the sheer jubilance of cracking open the door was knocked unceremoniously on her arse as the voice come from within the seemingly empty and dark room. "Oh shit!" She said covering her mouth, her father would give her a good yelling if he ever heard her swear. "Do you get a kick out of scaring girls half to death in the dark!" She could make out his figure but not his face or uniform as the light from the corridor spewed into the room.
"Do you get a kick out of breaking into areas that are off limits to civilians..." Varis began while he squinted at the young woman through the darkness. "The way I see it Ms Wyatt you have a choice. You could either tell me why you are breaking and entering into a restricted area, or I can call Security and your father. So, what is it going to be?" The El Aurian's curiosity was piqued. No one wanted to get to know him and yet here is this young woman.
Abbey had locked her eyes on the man, squinting he tried to read his face but there was nothing. At the mention of her father, she felt a pang of anger and then embarrassment at the thought of him coming around the corner and scolding her. "Yes, because places under lock and key are begging to be broken into it, especially ones that are to do with temporal anomalies" She crossed her arms hugging herself. "Please don't tell me, dad."
"Whether or not I tell your father has to do with you. Come in, close the door and have a seat. The first thing you should know is that we don't only deal with temporal anomalies. We deal with the timeline itself, its safety and its continuity." Varis smiled ever so briefly through the dim lighting. He thought that perhaps he could make a DTI recruit out of this young woman.
Abbey did just what he said and walked through the door closing it behind her before taking a seat on one of the empty seats. "How do you look after the timeline? Isn't it just.. there?" She asked her eyes flicking about the room as she took in the scene around her, she felt excitement swelling inside of her.
"Through events that we know to be fixed points in time we can record how history unfolds. With members of the DTI such as myself we can sense changes in the timeline innately. Have you ever heard of an El Aurian?" Varis knew the question may have sounded a little condescending but he had to know that she understood. He also began to process exactly how far he would take this lesson. He knew that he could not tell the young woman about the DTI ships, capable of moving through time.
