Mission:
Season 3: Episode 4: Cause and Effect
Location: Sickbay - USS Elysium
Timeline: MD10
1357 words - 2.7 OF Standard Post Measure
After the recent event River was more conscious of her medical condition and having already almost caused one incident decided to ensure that the sickbay had the 'cure' for her biochemical tears. It was lucky that S'Hib had caught the tear in tissue before any humanoid male had touched it else it would have already been too late. She hadn't cried since the academy and found the whole incident embarrassing. She had already stepped into the threshold and was looking for any doctor who was free by the time she had finished thinking about the incident.
Olivia was out in the main part of Sickbay going over a few things to make sure a few things were still up to date. Upon hearing the doors open, Olivia turned to see who it was coming into Sickbay. “Can I help you?,” Olivia asked.
"Yes, I was hoping to see Lieutenant Commander Sthig, is he around? He's Gorn you can not miss him" River explained, the current state she was in she wasn't exactly paying to much attention to the woman's uniform in front of her and asked for the one person who knew of her condition. "It's very urgent" She added looking around but there was no sign of the reptilian figure.
“He has stepped out for a little while,” Olivia replied. “Is there something I could help you with right now?”
"Oh you're a Doctor too, sorry" She said quickly wondering whether to dismiss the woman and wait for the Gorn medical officer or not. "Yes, but somewhere more... Private?" River looked around, it wasnt busy but enough so that she didn't want people over hearing, it was bad enough people seemed to know she was Elasian but worse if they knew already she had almost caused a scene.
“Sure, that can be arranged,” Olivia replied. “We have a few small exam rooms over to the side here.” Olivia lead the way over to one of the rooms.
Following behind the other woman into one of the quieter rooms she waited until the Lieutenant turned to speak and explain her situation. "Do you know what I am?" She asked curiously, she assumed that all the medical staff would have some knowledge especially if she was ever to cause an event. "Well, regardless I'm Elasian and today I almost contaminated a public area. I wanted to make sure you had the antidote replicated and at hand, I also think I should have one myself."
"I know of your people," Olivia replied. "Not many Elasian's serve in Starfleet, but there are a select few that do by choice. I along with others that went the medical route had to learn how to handle certain things related your people. The antidote is available."
"Can I see it?" she asked her eyes darting around as if something was going to jump out at her. River didn't know it but she was certainly suffering from an anxiety attack, her heart beating in her ears. "I just really need to see it" She added her breathing now growing increasingly rapid.
“That can be arranged,” Olivia replied. Olivia went over to one corner of the room where a small locker was located, placed her thumb on the scanner for access to the content of the locker. “Since It is one of the few medications that is hard to come by at times, we have to keep it locked up so that it doesn’t get used unless it is absolutely necessary.” Olivia picked up the vial of the antidote, turned and showed it to River.
She looked at the vial closely "And are you sure this works?" River hadn't ever seen it be used, it wasn't an option on Elas and she had managed to escape any previous infections, though just seeing a physical object made the young Elasian calm down a little, her eyes not looking so wild.
"I've only personally seen it be used one time and that was back when I was at the Academy," Olivia replied. "It was during my cadet cruise and one of my fellow classmates had gotten infected. The antidote worked on them due to the fact it was caught early enough and given in time to be the most effective." Olivia placed the vial of the antidote back into the locker so that it could be locked back up.
Relaxed now River's whole posture changed upon seeing and hearing the woman voice. "Thank you, I'm sorry I just... I really don't want to accidentally cause a scene and at the Academy, I felt safe and normal moving tot his ship, and everything changing too quickly its got me all a bit unhinged." The young Elasian explained.
Olivia smiled as she turned back towards River. "Well at least you know that we have the antidote on hand for when or should it be needed at any point," Olivia replied. "Plus from my understanding, other variations of the antidote is being worked on to hopefully work on non-human men. I haven't heard recently how the progress has been going on that research."
"Really?" She said interested now instead of suffering from an anxiety attack. River really needed to chill but her move to the ship had hit her for the worst and her anxiety was through the roof, over time she hoped it would ease. "Oh, I've come in here demanding to see things I'm sorry for interrupting you."
"It is alright, Ensign," Olivia replied. "I needed the distraction for a little while. Plus having you come by to see about the antidote gives me a good reason to check up on the research that is being done. Last update I had on it was a little over a year ago when I was asked to look over some of the results for it. So now I have a good reason to check up on the progress of it."
"I'm glad I provided that for you, it would seem this experience has left us both with a positive outcome" River smiled at the woman, which was some feat because River rarely had anything to smile about lately. So few things were going right in her time onboard recently, that alone caused her smile to wash away. "I think I should go now anyway, I've waited your time enough." her voice sounded defeated.
"You haven't waisted any of my time," Olivia replied. "Having you come by gave me good reason to get away from the reports I had been working on. Some of the reports are a bit tiresome to do but still have to get done at some point. You're welcome to come by any time even just for a visit."
"I'd like that," She said smiling for the first time feeling wanted in a few days, with everything that had gone on she had considered her place within Starfleet. "To visit some times, you can always come to see me too... If you ever wanted to that is."
"I will remember to do just that," Olivia said with a smile. "It will give me a reason to get out of the office so to speak for a little while to see how you and any others that need checking up on are doing. It has been awhile since I've done rounds outside of Sickbay checking up on everyone."
"Good" River smiled, scratching the back of her hand, this feeling of... she wasn't even sure what it was nervousness? She needed to sort herself out. "Well, Nice meeting you!" She gave one final wave before turning and walking out of the office, not before accidentally bumping into an instrument tray and making a loud clattering noise, River was never clumsy so why now!
Olivia smiled and watched the young Ensign head back out to resume her duties she guessed. She picked up the few things that fell off of the instrument tray before she headed back towards her office to finish up working on a couple of the reports she had been working on earlier.
