Brief Interview with Ms Elisha Pryce-Randal - onboard Ship Reporter

EPR: What is your role on the Elysium? And what does it entail?

AK: I’m the Chief Counsellor of the Elysium. It’s my role to look after the mental health and well-being of the crew and civilians aboard ship. As head of the Counselling department I also have a responsibility to the other Counsellors onboard, they’re very capable people who all know their roles and do them to the best of their ability.

EPR: What made you choose that line of work?

AK: I chose to be a Counsellor because I wanted to be there for those in need. As a Betazoid you could say I’m pre-disposed to being in this line of work but having gone through the trauma of losing a child and trying to take my own life as a result, I have a unique understanding of the pain others go through in times of crisis. If I can make a difference then that makes me feel happy.

EPR:How do you handle the pressure that comes with being a Starfleet officer?

AK: The pressure comes with the job, like the old saying says “If you can’t stand the heat stay out of the kitchen.” No one joins Starfleet and gets through the Academy without facing the pressure that comes with training to be a Starfleet Officer. If you can graduate the Academy then you’re already half way there, your first year as a fledgling Officer is the time when you learn whether or not you can truly cope with being onboard a ship or a station.

As for how I handle the pressure, I have a wonderful husband in Savar and plenty of chocolate waiting for me in our quarters!

EPR: What would you say to a cadet aspiring to do what you do?

AK: I’d say take your time and don’t rush into it, being responsible for other people’s lives is no easy task. It takes years of learning, this job isn’t for the faint of heart. You are responsible for the entire crew of wherever you’re based, that’s a lot to handle. It has it’s own share of difficult and unhappy times as well as brighter and amazing times.

EPR: What is your favourite memory of your time at the academy?

AK: *Smiling* Kal, my first true love. We met when were kids, when we joined the Academy we ended up being posted apart but we stayed lovers all through our Academy years. *Smile fades* unfortunately Kal was killed on assignment just over two years ago.

EPR: Do you have any funny tales to tell about your time on the USS Elysium?

AK: *Grinning* Nothing that would be suitable for people to read!

EPR - Elisha Pryce-Randal
