Mission: Season 3: Episode 4: Cause and Effect
Location: AIS Tirielle
1665 words - 3.3 OF Standard Post Measure

Alena waited for Admiral Zhukov at the construction site for the Starbase in orbit around Alindar. Even as the base was incomplete. The newest line of Anti-Borg ship was ready. First of her class.

"Years of research and development, and now we have this." The Chancellor of the Senate noted.

Alena spoke. "Ships will not turn the tide against the Borg."

"Neither will coffee, Darling, but it doesn't hurt." Zhukov added as she walked up, putting an arm around her future granddaugther in law's shoulder, "So, what have we got here?"

"Welcome." The head of research noted. "This is the AIS Tirielle. Essentially it's a testbead for a radical new class of starship." The head gestured Zhukov across the Gangway. "The Shielding System is a phased array shielding system. It's design to confuse the borg with false shield modulations. Deception to force the Borg into adapting their weapons to the wrong phase modulation."

"So the plan is to play with the hive mind's head?" Zhukov asked, raising an eyebrow in typical Vulcan fashion, "Fascinating."

"The Armor is something truly unique. It's a bio-armor. Each Hexagonal Cell is a self-contained silicone based ecosystem combining reflective and and ablative properties. The Armor heals and regrows." The head noted.

"Promise me it doesn't feel pain." The Ambassador only half joked.

"The warp drive and the power system is not based in a single warp core, but a cluster of twenty four microcores, combined into a single reactor module. Each cross-linked into the power system, Even if main power is down to twenty percent the other cores can provide a constant stream of power to all subsystems, compensating for power loss if one core has to be ejected, thus it is more redundant in powering the systems. This ship can remain operational even two-thirds of its EPS Systems are offline. We designed her to stay in the fight as long as possible."

"Okay, so we know it can take a punch." Zhukov smiled, "What about delivering one?"

"And last we come to the Weapons System Admiral. The wings contain our new Multi-Mode Phaser System. Capable of firing beams as well as pulses. Fore and Aft torpedo launches with Phased Quantum Torpedoes. The System fires torpedoes that are in partial phase, and enter a Borg Cube in a phased stated, Detonating on the inside. And finally the main cannon. The Tirielle carries a composite phaser system." The Head of Research spoke. "With the composite power relays, any Federation or Alindari starship can start a power transfer to bring the composite phaser up to maximum charge. Up to then ships can feed their combined power directly into the system. Creating a massive beam of composite energy. The amount of sheer firepower of the main weapon is staggering. Tirielle is designed to bring massive amounts of firepower against any borg vessel, and randomize the modulations of its weapons after every shot. But this is also our most classified naval project." The Head noted.

"She's a test-bed for future Alindari and Federation Starships. All of these technologies are in the prototype stage."

Alena looked at Zhukov. "This is our most classified Borg defensive project, and we're letting the Federation in on her shakedown and future development of these technologies. She's a quarter of the size of a Romulan D'Deridex Warbird, but can exceed its capabilities. She can't be scanned easily, and she's strong, tough, and powerful. In two decades, our Federation Fleet will be equipped with perfected systems based on this AIS Tirielle."

"Well, hopefully I'll be funding this project as President soon enough." Zhukov smiled, duly impressed, "Any thought to naming one of the class Zhukov? Not for me, for my famous ancestor, of course."

Alena spoke. "The naming convention will be Famous Generals and Warriors from all our worlds and Allies. Next year, Eisenhower will launch. Followed by Garth of Izar, MacArthur, and Zhukov." Alena winked.

"Garth of Izar?" Zhukov cringed, her time in intelligence had made the darkest secrets of Capt. Garth available to her, "You'll get some push back on that one. He's one most of the Federation would rather forget ever existed."

"There might be still time to make changes to the Naming Convention, You'll have to talk to the Defense College's Naval Review board. Aside from that, they're the first true warship our people have build." Alena showed Zhukov the interior. It was cramped like a defiant, the Alindari had taken a lot of design notes from it. "Here, Admiral. Look." She took an access panel off. "We're testing a new grounding system that redirects any console overloads into the plasma venting system. We're hoping this system will reduce console explosions from killing the crew. Once again, we're testing technologies developed in the Federation with the intent of sharing the shakedown tests with the Advanced Starship Design Bureau. And we'll keep on testing things on the Tirielles until even after Zero Day. Enough is never enough for the Initiative. We will out-innovate the Borg."

"I have no doubt you will." Zhukov replied, with pride in the Alindari's ingenuity, though she shuddered visibly as she remembered a console explosion on Enterprise-C that nearly killed her and did kill the Ensign at Comms.

Alena smiled. "Now, my dear mother-in-law." She noted. "I have to go pick up some new clothes for Nikita. And some new shoes. How long has he been wearing those things? They're literally falling apart. Yes, Alindari women take care of their boyfriends." She pulled out a PADD. "Lets see.. Something formal for special occasions. Not too extravagant. I know his tastes well. He needs a haircut." She chuckled.

"Yes, you'll have your hands full keeping that boy presentable." Zhukov laughed, "He's one of the better looking men in the family, but he just doesn't put the work in on himself." She stopped, took a breath, then corrected herself, "Well, except in the gym, he's a maniac in the gym."

"C'mon, I'll show you some of the Cuisine my people can make." Alena left the Tirielle with Zhukov in tow and was about to speak when Ambassador T'Keva and her 'Sister' walked up. "Your Imperial Majesty." She greeted. "Did you have time to reconsider our proposal?" The Empress sighed.

"Yes, I have, and the answer is still no." Alena mentioned. "A trade agreement right now would be inappropriate. Unless the Star Empire is interested in resuming the patrol agreements we agreed upon in the original Typhon Security treaty, that the Senate let expire because it needed their fleet elsewhere.. The Typhon Alliance cannot protect Romulan Frieghters unless the Romulan Star Empire enters the Alliance, with the Federation Council's blessing, and each member of the security pact contributes to defense of the Typhon Sector." The Empress noted. "You pulled out because of Orions and politics, and now that our defensive affiliation with the Federation has been successful at maintaining security, You want back in?" She chuckled. "No, Ambassador. The Star Empire will have to earn good faith, and they've done little of that recently. If you want good faith. Take responsibility for that rogue warbird I've been hearing about. Once that happens, then we'll talk."

The Romulan Ambassador stared at her quiely and left with her 'sister' in tow.

"Look well, mother-in-law. Many things happen below the surface with Romulans. One thing we must know, is why the Star Empire wants back into this sector so badly." Alena slightly snarled. "And T'Keva knows better than to talk politics with me when we're not in court."

"Which is why she tried." Zhukov nodded, she'd heard about T'Keva from Sela, "She was hoping to catch you off guard, see if you'd let something slip. My niece warned me to keep an eye on her, says she's slippery."

"That 'sister' of hers is the greater danger." Alena mentioned. "I imagine she will try to have me assassinated." She grinned. "Oh but she's going to learn very soon that the Alindari once played the game of intrigues and politics. Many millennia ago, we bathed in corruption and intrigues, we know our base natures intimately. However the longer we keep her presence here, the more dangerous she becomes. So, mother-in-law. How long should we let the Tal'Shiar agent hang around. She's been so useful to the Defense College's School of Intelligence. The more she acts behind the scenes, and uses her wonderful encryption algorithms, the longer our list of known Tal'Shair grows. I would like to slip some data on Commander Mishka Valdran to your niece one day.... but no... best not to get to involved with intrigues. Even when you use a snake, there's a danger the snake will still bite you." Alena mentioned. "T'Keva and her 'sister' does not know me as well as you and Nikita do. I'm only the Empress when I choose to be, any other time. I'm just a girl with a basketball." She winked to Zhukov.

"You just keep dribbling and let me know if she makes you too uncomfortable, dear." Zhukov smiled, "And then let me do my thing. It's easier for me and it'll keep your lovely royal hands clean."

Alena nodded. "Very well, mother-in-law. I believe the Defense College's School of Intelligence has been indulged long enough. And T'Keva will shed crocodile tears over her sister. Did you notice how the sister hounds the Ambassador? T'Keva's trying to keep her head." Alena picked up her basketball and bounced it. "I wonder what we can accomplish if T'Keva is not fearing for her life?"

"Only one way to find out." Zhukov smiled a wicked smile, "But let's not let Nikita delay his haircut until after we do that, huh?"

Alena nodded and spoke again. "The Alindari physically are not the strongest race. But what we lack in the strength of our arms, we make up for in our hearts. We would die before we let the Borg assimilate the Federation. When the day Empress Anara feared comes, we will be ready."
