The gym was a bustle with activity. Baeryn detested visiting at this time but she was in need of more then just a physical workout, a mental one. Nowadays she rather enjoyed the time she spent in marine county, which is where she would be but she needed to test keeping her mind locked when not around David.

No sooner she sat down at a machine she caught the Garrett Lovejoy's eye across the room.

Garrett was working on the punching bag. He enjoyed it as he ducked and weaved, firing off a series of punches that made the bag shake. Using the bag, relaxed him, freed his mind from the turmoil around him even if only for a few minutes.

Baeryn tried to ignore the first officer, adverting her attention to the machine she was prepping to use. After only one set she stood and dropped the towel over the bench and walked towards the punching bag. She came up behind it and held it in place.

"Frustrated much Lovejoy?"

He threw several more punches before stopping and looking at her. "No. Just putting in maximum effort for maximum results. Thanks for holding the bag." He added before continuing on, "Is there something I can do for you Lieutenant?"

Whavi held tight onto the bag, using the power in her legs to keep her cemented in place as he send jabs toward the bag. "Ouch, right to the point I see."

He sent several more punches into the bag. "Direct. It's easier that way. No dancing around, hinting at something. The sooner someone speaks their mind the sooner a solution can be found." He finished as he sent a left jab into the bag.

"Says the man currently dancing with a punching bag. Rough first couple of days?"

"Touché." He said stopping. "No more than I expected. Are you settling in to your new position as second officer?" He inquired.

Exhaling deeply she said ,"Not exactly. The position change caught me a bit off guard. As it did for everyone else." Baeryn let go of the bag pushing it a bit to cause it to swing. "Wouldn't mind a 'friendly' spar. If your up for it that is." She shrugged nonchalantly.

"You'll get use to it. The Captain has confidence in you...so do I." He caught the bag and considered her comment. "Get your gloves laced up and meet me at the ring." He accepting her informal challenge.

Baeryn nodded but didn't grin until she turned her face from his view and walked towards the bench to retrieve her gloves. A few minutes later she was swinging her arms to loosen her muscles headed towards the center of the ring.

"Not to brag or anything Loveless but you don't look like much compared to the marines i've been spending time with." She teased.

He ignored the nickname she gave him. To reply was childish. "Indeed. Appearances are often deceiving Lieutenant. Shall we get started?"

"Gentlemen first." She spread her arms in a taunting gesture. It was hard to hide her excitement, knowing there were quite a few members of the crew who would kill to be in her position right now.

His face was a mask blank of emotion. He didn't take the bait to throw the first punch which would leave him wide open for a counter punch. Instead he circled her, his hands up to block any punch yet also ready to throw one when the opportunity presented itself.

Baeryn mirrored his movements, she wasnt going to allow him to get behind her. Noting the Commanders reluctance to throw the first punch Baeryn easily slipped into offensive. Throwing just a couple light jabs with little effort, ready to block the moment he came for her.

Lovejoy continued to circle Baeryn. He easily dodged her half hearted jabs as he looked for an opening in her defense. He was patient, he would wait for the right moment.

Baeryn's frustration was growing. Lovejoy was an unmoving force, if she wasnt careful she was going to get sloppy. She sent her right fist towards his jaw, knowing full well he would block or grab her hand, and when he did she sent her left fist into his ribcage with more force then intended.

He ducked the punch and he saw an opening. He sent a combination of a left jab at her head but a telling right cross to Baeryn's midsection.

Taking the hits with little evidence of slowing Baeryn grabbed hold of Garretts shoulders and send her knee into his gut. He must have tensed because she felt like her knee hit a wall of rock. Then she pushed back until the black spots disappeared from her vision. Stay light on her feet as she retreated.

He followed her but not recklessly, but with careful movements. He didn't waste energy bobbing and weaving needlessly. He would wait for her to make a move then he would pounce with another combination

"Is your plan to frustrate me?" She sneered.

No reaction to her verbal jab, though the fact Baeryn made it showed it was working. His face was a mask as he waited.

Ah, so the quiet patient type. He was a far cry from the marines she had been sparring with lately. Keeping her obsidian eyes locked on him as she inched closer but halted, she wanted him to meet her half way, she could play this game to.

Only as Baeryn moved forward then stop did a flicker of emotion show on Lovejoy's face. A smile of approval? Was there for an instant than was gone. He tossed a couple of jabs, just to keep her at bay and to see if prompted any further reaction from her.

Baeryn ducked and dodged. She had already given him too much leeway before and wouldn't make the same mistake again. It may have taken her a minute to recognize she wasn't sparring a loud mouthy marine but she caught on quick, keeping her face neutral and focused. Suddenly she spun to the left and caught Garrett in the lower back, not enough to do any damage just enough to show she was paying attention.

Garrett's reply was quick in coming. He threw a right hook and when Baeryn moved tp avoid it she ran into a solid left uppercut to her ribs. He followed that with a right cross to the body before moving out of range of her counter punches.

Sweat started to bead across her forehead after what seemed like a half an hour of dancing around the ring with Lovejoy. His fighting technique was honorable, he never took the cheap shot and Baeryn knew he was pulling his punches, which given how sore her ribs were getting she was grateful for. Sparring with Garrett called for her to pace herself, it wasn't rushed, his moves were more calculated and he didn't use brute force.

Stepping back Baeryn raised her gloved hands, "I saw we call a draw Commander." A hint of a smile in her expression.

He stopped. smile appeared on his face. "I agree Lieutenant. Thank you for a most informative and enjoyable session. Should you wish another, I am more than willing." He then thrust his right hand out to shake hers.

Baeryn's eyes dropped to the offered hand. Her emotions were all amiss, she wanted to dislike Garrett, especially after how he had jumped at Gallia during the meeting, but her senses were telling her that wasn't his true nature. After a moment of hesitation she took his hand. "Until next time Loveless."

"Until next time Waverider." Garrett replied sincerely, shaking her hand.
