After a year of recuperation and retraining, Samaire stepped off of the Shuttle that brought her to the USS Elysium. Beside her, her little niece looked around the shuttle bay.

“Big” Skylah said brightly to her Aunt.

“Yes, very big” Samaire replied. ”Come, lets go find our cabin.” Samaire hefted the cat carrier and her duffle bag.

Skylah slid her backpack onto her back. “Its so… nice here. Clean.. like the house in California.”

Sam nodded. The House in California was the one thing she owned now. Oh she had a lot of things that were left to her in trust after her father died while she was missing, but the property, she had been told would be hers, a parcel of land in Scotland, where she had, planned to build a house, was no longer with the family. Not surprising after over 160 years.

Her family’s descendants had arranged for her have money and helped her buy the house in California for herself and Skylah, then they had severed connections. She was a ghost to them. And that was all they wanted her as. They did not want someone with a strong claim to the lairdship back in their lives. And she had a very strong claim. Lawyers that had come with counsellors and doctors to see the rescued crew of the USS Archeron had helped track family’s down and one, had found that when her brother had died and even though his child had inherited, it was not the way things had been worded in the will Douglas had left. He had left the Lairdship and family fortune to Samaire.

Now she was back, she had chosen to hold off on fighting for her family home and fortunes. They had spent a fortnight at the family’s main holdings before they had left, and moved back to California.

Their new home, it overlooked the sea up near Monterey and it was secluded. Something they both enjoyed. It had given them time to adjust and heal. Something they both needed. And while others of the crew of the Archeron had gathered together, Sam refused to. She wanted to put it away. Not dwell on it. She had enough issues being a single mother in a time which she didn’t know and facing letters from her biological family’s lawyers demanding she sign documents giving up her claim to the family fortune. She may have chosen not to fight, but she refused to give up her claim. She was a McBride, and she was always going to be a McBride. She was not Skye, her sister who’s claim would have been instantly dismissed due to the fact she was not genetically a McBride, She was Samaire Elspeth McBride and she would be damned if she would refute that.

As they walked out of the Shuttle bay, Samaire took the cabin assignment from an ensign and checked the map on the PADD. Then with Skylah beside her, they walked to the nearest Turbolift and headed for their cabin.

Several hours later, she sat in the small lounge of the family cabin alone, looking out at the stars. Skylah was asleep in the smaller of the two bedrooms and their cat Seraph was asleep at the foot of Skylahs bed.

Samaire could not yet sleep. She was not sure this would be a good posting for her and Skylah but she had to try. She was a Starfleet officer and she needed to try to make it work in this new time. In this new Universe.
