Brief Interview with Ms Elisha Pryce-Randal - onboard Ship Reporter

EPR: What is your role on the Elysium? And what does it entail?

BW: I'm the Chief of Operations, it's my job to oversee the operations department as well as guarantee the ships functions are working properly and are well maintained. My team and I work closely with the engineering department to see this is done.

I've also just inherited the role of second officer, one to which I'm still learning. I'm third in command, should the captain and the first officer become unavailable I sit in the chair.

EPR: What made you choose that line of work?

BW: I actually started off in security, but when postings for different positions became available I threw my hat in the ring. I enjoy new challenges and knowing as much as I can. Makes me versatile. When the CHOPS position opened up on the Elysium I applied, but was sure they would of had a better candidate then me. I'm still blown away that I'm here.

EPR: How do you handle the pressure that comes with being a Starfleet officer?

BW: It's not all that bad. Okay I might be underplaying it a bit, but you learn what you can and can't handle. Balance is important, if not the key to keeping the stress level low. Some days are harder then others, some postings more challenging, its all in the way you approach each day.

EPR: What would you say to a cadet aspiring to do what you do?

BW: Start with the small jobs. They're just as important as the big ones. I value my job now just as much as I did as a transporter tech. Both are crucial, even if one seems more trivial. Sometimes not everyone can do what you do, so do it well. Don't rush ahead, when you're ready doors will open, and if not start knocking.

EPR: What is your favorite memory of your time at the academy?

BW: My favorite? I have a few, but I have to say they aren't exactly interview appropriate. That being said I did have a favorite instructor, Professor Sotodeh. He taught Interspecies Protocol. The role plays he had us perform without universal translators to help us communicate were indeed some of the most important in my opinion. They were so eye opening. He taught us that even if the tools we have fail we should always revert back to basic communication. Eye contact, speak slow, watch your tone, and always proceed cautiously but peacefully.

EPR: Do you have any funny tales to tell about your time on the USS Elysium?

Well, when I first came aboard I was really trying to learn my way around without using the computer as an aid, I may have gotten lost more times then I ever found my destination. Why I always ended up on some end of the arboretum beats me! I also entered the kitchen of one of the Klingon restaurants one night, they were extremely busy and next thing I know I was being handed plates and asked to deliver them to tables. It was actually pretty fun!
