Where Is This...

Timeline: MD3 0150 hours (Immediately following "Help Him!")

The slow, steady pulsing beat was the first thing that David sensed before rising from the darkness. Then there was light. It was all around him, no end perceived. He tried to see his body but, there was no sense of up or down, left or right. He started to feel panic but, suddenly, a version of himself appeared, looking at him.

"It's okay, David. You're safe. I know, I know. You're feeling confused, out of place. That's understandable. It's not everyday that one can take a walk through one's own mind."

"Who..who are you?" David asked, though his voice didn't seem to come from him. Instead, it seemed to come from everywhere. "My...my mind?"

The other David smiled warmly and nodded. "I'm you. Or, more specifically part of you. I am the visual representation of your ego. If it helps reduce confusion, you can call my One. And yes," One glanced around. "This is your mind. At least one part of it, that is. There is so very much more beyond here. When you're ready, we will help you through your journey."

"We?" David asked.

One smlied softly again. "Yes, we. There's the id, which is the primitive and instinctual part of your mind that contains sexual and aggressive drives, plus hidden memories. Then, there's the super-ego, who operates as your moral conscience. Then, you have me. As your ego, I am the realistic part that mediates between the desires of the the other two."

David considered what was just said. "Okay. Why am I here? And why can't I see my body?"

One replied calmly. "You're here, because you're in a coma. Right now, your mind is damaged, which is why you can't see a representation of yourself. What's the last thing you remember?"

David tried to think. "I...I think I was with Baeryn. We were...we were in her bed. Then......nothing. Why? What happened?"

"While you were napping, you had a memory fragment from your distant past suddenly reemerge. It was a memory of your twin brother, Jakob."

"My...my twin brother??" David was confused. "I'm an only child......I don't have any siblings!"

Shaking his head, One replied. "That's not true. You did have an identical twin brother. His name was Jakob."

Hearing One using the past tense, David asked, "What happened to him.

One shrugged. "I'm not sure. That part of your memory is still damaged. But, as we continue, and find Two and Three, your id and superego, we might find the answer."

"But....how?" David asked incredulously. "I don't even have a body!"

One smiled a knowing smile. "You forget, David. This is your mind. You can be anything you want to be. All you have to do is concentrate."

For a few beats, nothing changed. Then, the view changed to a beautiful day on Jones Beach, and David coalesced into how he looked when he had brought Baeryn here.

One smiled a toothy grin. "And now the journey can truly begin."
