Sick bay was darkly illuminated given the late hour. The night staff was used to tip toeing around and moving with little sound as patients slept. This night was no exception.
Baeryn couldn’t find it in her to leave David’s side now that he was awake. The fear that she would return to find him unconscious or unresponsive was just too high. Currently she was curled up next to him on the cramped made for one biobed, watching the rise and fall of his chest from where her head lay on his shoulder.
“I missed you so much.” She whispered, not sure he would hear her. They hadn’t spoken in awhile and she was almost certain he had fallen asleep.
As he pulled her a little closer, David whispered in reply. "I'm sorry that you had to experience this pain, Baer. I promise that, whatever it takes, I will make it up to you." He turned his head and kissed the top of her head, then breathed in her sweet scent. Even when she had no perfume or lotions on her skin. Just the smell of her own body was invigorating to him.
“I want you to know that whenever you’re ready to talk about it.... I’m here to listen. Always. And that doesn’t have to be tonight, or tomorrow, or ever. Just as long as you know I’m here for you.” Baeryn nuzzled her face into the crock of David’s neck, pressing her lips to the delicate skin there. She kept her eye lids shut for fear the tears would start again if she allowed herself to look into his beautiful blue eyes.
David softly moaned when he felt Baerys soft lips on his skin. So much in his life was spinning right now. This, this right here, Baeryn in his arms, loving him, him loving her, this was his core to rebuild from. "Just be patient with me, Baer. Give me some time to figure out my next step. Then, when we are both out of here, either in my cabin or in your quarters," he remembered that she asked for time on the subject of moving in together. "Then I'll tell you everything that I know."
“Whatever you need.” She spoke against his neck, her warm breath like hot wisps against his skin. Baeryn knew there were things she needed to discuss with David, but she was content to wait. His health was the front most important matter at hand and would stay that way until he told her otherwise. “I love you.” The words still felt foreign to her but..... right.
"I love you." He knew that she had something to tell him. He wasn't sure what, But he could feel a silence between them. He wanted to ask. However, he felt that had no rIght to do so. Baeryn would tell him when she was ready, of that he had no doubt. "I'm home again. Back in your arms, where I belong."
“I was worried that... you might not remember me when you woke up. The not knowing was the worst part...” Baeryn’s voice shook slightly. She paused briefly before continuing, “The doctor said he couldn’t be sure what part of your memory was truly affected until you woke up. Of course I thought the worst possible scenario...I was...” She should feel the tears building behind her tightly shut eyes, threatening to slip out at any moment. “I held such regret for not voicing my love for you. My mind kept reminding me of all the time I wasted, all the chances I never took to tell you.”
David held her to him firmly with his right arm. With his left hand, he gently caressed her right arm, which was across him. "Baer," he replied softly. I could never forget you. I thought of you the entire time I was trapped inside my mind. Getting back to you was the driving force that helped me." He paused for a few beats, then continued. "Lets not waste any more time, my love. Let's make sure that every moment we are together, we make the most of it."
The subject of living arrangements rarely crossed Baeryn’s mind due to the fact they found any excuse to see one another daily. Spending the nights in his quarters or hers went unsaid most times. Baeryn pressed another kiss to David’s neck. She savored the moment, the warmth that met her lips, the smell of him that calmed her all over. “I’ve been thinking, I know it would be inconvenient to be so far from marine county but how do you feel about moving in with me? I know it’s rather fast, and if you would rather keep your quarters I completely understand. We briefly discussed the subject and I know I shot it down quickly. But if negotiations are still an option?”
"I'll move in as soon as the Doc clears me to get outta here." David said without hesitation. My quarters never really felt like a home. It was were I stayed after work. Your quarters, they're home, because its where you are."
A giddy fluttering feeling rushed through Baeryn. “You won’t mind being so far from the barracks and the other marines?!” The fingers of her right hand began to draw lazy circles over David’s ribs.
David was silent for a few beats. Then, he took a breath and replied. "I've been thinking about asking the Colonel to move me to the inactive reserves, Baeryn. I still want to be a Marine but....I need to figure out my place in the world. There are so many questions that I have to figure out. The only thing that I am absolutely certain of is you. I know that me place is by your side, my heart and soul interwoven with yours." He was silent after that, not knowing how she would reply.
The silence seemed to be deafening as she processed what David was telling her. She was worried she would react wrong to the news, that she would give him the wrong impression on how she felt about it, so she took a few extra seconds before replying. Her hand never stilling its motion, still ideally drawing circles
Propping herself up on her elbow Baeryn looked David in the eye, the low illumination of the sick bay lighting up both their features. “I meant it when I said whatever you need. As long as you need. I’m not going anywhere. I stand by your decision. To whatever end, remember?” She paused but then continued before he could respond. “I’m by no means a professional, but in my opinion I think it may be smart to take time to sort things out. Especially with everything you’ve just learned.”
David nodded in reply. "Thank you. For everything. For your love, for your compassion, your trust. I promise to Never take advantage of you."
“You don’t have to thank me silly. It’s what I’m here for.” She tilted her head smiling down at him.
Looking up into Baeryn's face, even in this low lighting, David could see her hypnotic eyes, he reached up and gently pulled her back down to him and kissed her.
It was still a shock to the hybrid how lost she could get in David. It took a nurse coughing to remind her she was in the middle of sick bay sharing a one person biobed with her love. Breaking the kiss she smiled bashfully, hiding her face in David’s neck. It was just too easy to get carried away.
“I can’t wait until you're home.” She whispered, now fully aware they were not alone.
"Same here, my love." David whispered back.
