Mission:
Season 5: Episode 2: Operation Save Humanity
Location: USS Elysium sickbay
Timeline: MD 6 / 1545 hours (Concurrent with "What Demon Roams Here...Parts 1&2)
2250 words - 4.5 OF Standard Post Measure
It was quiet in sickbay, David was still laying on the biobed, in a deep coma. His vitals had all remained low, but within acceptable parameters for over three days now. During those long three days, there had been no sign that David was resposive to the outside world. Only time would tell how long he would remain under.
Emily was taking a couple of hours to familiarise herself with sickbay, she was still recuperating from her ‘W.O.R.M’ surgery so she didn’t want to overdo it. Stopping by David’s bed she took a look at his chart, all seemed stable but he was still unresponsive.
“Hi Emily” Leilani smiled as she walked into Sickbay, “How’s he doing?” She motioned to David.
“No change I’m afraid” Emily offered a smile. “We can but hope though.”
The sound of a very angrey reptile swearing in it's own language echoed through sickbay as the ship's MD entered the room from his office. The old gorn clearly had been arguing with someone and it look liked he'd lost. Nothing his staff were there he straightened himself out and switch his combadge back on. " Sssorry about that. Trying to get answersss from an El Aurian doctor and it was like pulling teeth with a pair of nail clippersss. " He said as he pulled out his coffee flask and downed the whole thing. It had been a long day. " How'sss the patient." He asked Emily.
“From what I can see no change” Emily gave an apologetic look. “At least he’s stable.”
Baeryn entered sick bay nodding greeting towards those in the room. She wore a small smile when she made eye contact with each individual as she headed towards where David lay. Her expression seemed to saddened greatly the moment she stepped towards the biobed. Leaning down the hybrid gently pressed her pursed lips to her loves forehead.
As soon as Baeryn touched him, David's vitals started to fluctuate. Warning alarms began to go off as his levels started to drop.
The gorn was at his patient's side in seconds furiously looking to see what was happening. " Dam it blood clot and it's too deep in hisss brain for usss to get it." he said staring at the results.
The sounding alarms startled Baeryn and she immediately stepped back from David.
Leilani moved to Baeryn’s side to support her, letting Emily do her job alongside Sthilg.
“Anticoagulant, or clot buster?” Emily looked at Sthilg. “Would it work?”
" Try the clot bussster, but it may not work with hisss biology." the gorn replied.
David's vitals continued to fluctuate rapidly. His internal body temp suddenly started to skyrocket, jumping twenty degrees in a matter of seconds. Sweat began pouring from every pore on his body.
Emily quickly ran to get the clot buster, grabbing a hypo from the tray she rushed back with it pressing it to his neck. “Buster in! Body temperature rising.”
" Body temperaturesss rising get me sssome thirty-three ml of zigomite." The gorn said desperately hoping it would lower his temperature.
Emily nodded, heading over to the medicine tray she picked up the Zigomite. Bringing it back to David she pressed the hypo to his neck. “thirty-three Zigomite going in Doctor.”
As soon as the medicine hit David's system, his fever broke and his internal temerature started to return to mirmal.
Another alarm beeped, this one for the sensor watchingbthe blood clot. It was reducing, however, the readings were odd. It seemed that his body had rejected the clot buster and the clot was shrinking on its own. After several tense moments, the clot was completely gone!
The gorn was about to say how that wasn't normal, but there was so much of El Aurian biology the fedration didn't understand. " Well looksss like he cleared it himssself. David can you hear me." He asked gently.
Slowly, David's vitals started to return to a perfect rhythm. His rate of breathing increased, as did his heart rate. What was more important though, his brain waves began to rise back to normal levels.
Then, for the first time in days, he moved his head slightly and a soft groan vibrated in his chest.
“He’s coming round!” Leilani smiled as she looked at Baeryn. “Whatever happened he’s coming back Baeryn!”
Uncharacteristically Baeryn grabbed Leilani's hand. She needed something....someone tangible to hold on to. At first she thought she had gone something to harm David, she still felt that way and would until he was awake. Until he was back with her, smiling and joking like he normally did. It was an effort to keep her breathing steady, the rush of fear and excitement mingling inside her belly.
Leilani was only too happy to offer the support Baeryn was looking for. She offered a warm smile. “It’s okay, I’ll stay for as long as you need me.”
A few beats later, after David's vitals beared normal readings, he groaned again. Then, after turning his head, he opened his eyes. The immediately found and locked on Baeryn's. Opening his mouth, his voice horse, he said one word.
"...Baeryn..."
Baeryn made a sound somewhat similar to a whimper and a gasp when her eyes locked on David’s. Those ocean eyes were her undoing, the sound of her name on his lips had her stumbling forward on weak knees. At first she was nervous to touch him, tentative that her touch would cause him more pain.
“David...” Baeryn whispered his name, then succumbed to her need to hold him. Leaning down she took his face in both her hands, pressing her brow to his she whispered, “I thought I lost you....”
Then the tears came, built up over the days David had been unconscious, started flowing from her eyes like waterfalls of salt water.
Slowly, David reached up with weak arms and wrapped them around Baeryn's shaking form. "Shh...shh..s'ok, Ryn...you ain't lost me yet." His voice, though a weak whisper, was powerful in the love he felt for this woman.
Between sobs Baeryn gasped for breath, she tried to slow her breathing knowing how ridiculous she looked and sounded. It took her a few moments before she could pull back an inch to look David in the face.
“I love you. I should have said it before this happened, I’m so sorry that I didn’t. I’m so sorry David. I love you more then I ever thought possible.”
Though weak, an incredibly happy smile filled his face as he looked up at her and whispered. "I know, Baeryn. I've always known. I love you more than I can put into words. Everything that I am, everything that I was, everything that I will be, is yours for the taking."
Baeryn gave a small nervous laugh. Straightening up a bit she wiped the moisture from her cheeks and took a deep inhale. "I missed you," Turning briefly her face tinted a bit pink when she finally acknowledged the others in the room.
Leilani smiled warmly as she looked towards Baeryn, before taking a step closer to the bed and smiling at David. “It’s good to see you on the road to recovery.”
Turning his eyes from Baeryn, David gave a weak, but polite smile and nod. "Sergeant Charles. Ill be ready for morning PT. Just need a few minutes to get my bearings." He then gave a slight grin, trying to signify his weak attempt at humor.
Emily grinned at David’s response to Leilani. “Corporal, I’m Emily Charles I’m a new nurse here, how are you feeling?”
A look of confusion filled David's face. Turning back to Baeryn he asked, "Baer, I know I was down for a few days but, did flyboy go and marry another woman?"
Baeryn raised both of her auburn brows in surprise, then her face shifted to that of embarrassment at the fact she knew very little about the woman who had just been her greatest comfort only minutes before. The last few days she had done nothing but dwell on David’s condition, and her own. “I...well, I’m not entirely sure.” She turned hoping one of them would step in and save her.
Emily grinned. “Sorry to confuse!” She looked at George then back at David and Baeryn. “George is my twin brother.”
David smiled, understanding now. "That's nice," he said. Then, without control of his thoughts, he continued. "I have a twin brother. His name is Jakob." Then, as soon as the words left his mouth, the smile fell away. He swalloed hard and took a ragged breath. "I mean...I...uh...I-I had, a twin brother...." He looked back at Baeryn, fear starting to fill his eyes. "Baer," he whispered to her. "I'm scared."
"Hey hey..." Baeryn was instantly beside David, cupping his cheek with her palm. Her voice was soft as she held his stare. "One moment at a time okay. Breathe with me." The hybrid inhaled deeply through her nose and held the breath for a moment before slowly exhaling. She did this a few times, keeping her eyes locked on David's. Though she wanted answers she would be patient until he was ready to talk about... his twin?
David did a Baeryn instructed. Slowly, he began to calm some. Finally, he was as calm as he would get. "Thank you." He said to Baeryn, slowly kissing the palm of her hand.
Leilani smiled as she looked towards David and Baeryn, “We’ll let the two of you have some time alone.” She motioned to Emily to join her.
While David had heard someone talking softly to them, he didn't hear the actual words. His whole focus was on Baeryn's beautiful face and hypnotic pools of obsidian.
Baeryn met David’s unyielding stare with her own. The brightest grin on her lips. She was only partially aware of the females excusing themselves, her focus on the male before her. Finally awake. Finally! She knew better then to rejoice prematurely but she couldn’t help it, couldn’t help the relief she felt looking into his ocean eyes.
The hybrid leaned back down to press her lips to her lovers. There were no words in the entire universe that could convey what she felt in this moment.
David breathed deeply in through his nose as he returned Baeryn’s kiss with as much passion as he could muster. This woman, this angel, was the one he would willing go through any difficulty to get back to.
The gorn doctor was looking over the results with a look of astonishment. " Well, corporal welcome back to the world of the living. I've never ssseen sssomeone cope with brain sssurgery so well." he said calmly.
Hearing Sthilg speak broke the moment between Baeryn and David. Looking over to the Gorn, he caught his breatb and replied. "Th-thank you, Sir!'"
" No problem. Any idea why part of your brain was de connected from the ressst of it?" The gorn replied camly.
David shrugged slightly as he replied. "Things are still foggy, but, I think it had something to do with my twin brother dying."
" Had sssomeone removed your memory of him for a reassson?" The old lizard inquired.
Holding Baeryn's hands in his, David closed his eyes to think. Furrowing his brows, he replied slowly, as if digging very hard to find the requested information. His vutals started to rise, due to his rising stress levels. "I..I think....I think it had something to do with me acting like Jakob was still there....after he died..." he started to sweat from the concentration.
Emily frowned as she watched the biobed readouts. “Readings are rising doctor, blood pressure, heart rate and respiration are all climbing steeply.”
" Lay down and breath in marine. " the gorn said as he looked over the data.
David did as instructed. Slowly, his vitals began returning to normal.
" You've been through a ssseriousss operation. You need ressst and sssleep." The gorn said calmly.
Finally calming all the way, David nodded and replied. "Yes, Sir. And Doc...thank you. Thank you for everything you have done for me. I won't forget it." He raised his right hand towards Sthilg.
Baeryn absentminded ran the inside of her thumb against David's knuckle's as she leaned down and pressed a kiss to his temple. "Don't worry I won't be going anywhere."
Looking back at Baeryn, he replied with a smile and a kiss on her knuckles. "I love you, Baeryn."
"And I you." She replied sweetly before turning to the Gorn. "How long will he need to stay under observation?"
David looked back to Sthilg as well, awaiting the response.
" I'm afraid i really don't know. El Aurian and brain surgery aren't my specialties. I've to contact Starfleet medical for help. You'll be in here a few daysss minimum." the lizard explained.
David nodded slowly, then looked over at Baeryn. "I know you have work, Baer," he said softly. "I'll understand if you can't stay."
Baeryn never resented her position more then she did in that moment. She knew the crew was counting on her, but then so was David. Braving a smile for her love she said, "When I'm not on duty, I'll be here. I promise."
David smiled softly. He knew that Baeryn meant what she said. He just hoped that he would never be a burden to her.
