Once the Elysium arrived at Research Base 35, Kyle beamed over, ahead of the group of scientists he was to supervise. After materializing in transporter room two, he took a few beats to close his eyes and listen to the sound of the ship. While the vibrations were the same, the sound was slightly off.
Next, he made his way up to the bridge. As he entered the large compartment, his eyes went to the tactical station where, years ago, during a heavy battle, the console had exploded in his face, burying a few shards into his chest and hurling him across the bridge.
After shaking himself from the memory, he made his way over to the door leading to the Captain's Ready Room. While he had heard of Captain Phoenix Lalor, he had never heard of the woman currently sitting in the center seat. He hoped that this Captain Carrington was up to the task of sitting in this particular captain's chair. He had done so once, briefly, with distinction in battle. He knew he could do it again, if the situation merited it.
Reaching up, he pressed the door chime, then waited.
"Come" The irate tone suggested that the captain was not in a good mood.
The doors slid open, and Kyle strode in purposefully, stopping a few paces in front of the Captain's desk. "Commander Kyle Reece, reporting for assignment, as ordered by Starfleet Command, Captain. My orders." He reached out and placed a small isoleniar rod on her desk.
Yasmine looked up and took the rod. "Commander Reece." She said with a nod. "Welcome to the USS Elysium,"
Garrett sat in a chair to the right of the desk. "Commander Garrett Lovejoy." He introduced himself.
Kyle politely tipped his head forward. "Thank you, Captain, Commander. It's good to be back on Ely."
Yasmine was scanning his file. "Ah yes, under the Admiral right?"
Kyle stood a little taller. "Yes, Captain. As the first Chief Tactical officer for the Ely, when she began her maiden voyage."
"Well she has a few more miles on her now." Carrington said with a smile. "Tell me, why you were selected for this assignment."
Kyle shrugged honestly as he responded. "Someone at Headquarters felt I'd be a great addition to the mission itself."
"And you bring skills in?" She wanted to hear it from him.
"I'm here to ride sheepdog on the scientists, Captain. As you know from my file, I have a few combat sorties under my belt. I was also Admiral James Hurin's Chief Combat Ops Officer, aboard the Nimitz and Strat Ops Chief at Starbase 80 afterwards. I can think on my feet, and can get the job done, Captain."
From his chair Garrett spoke. "Those scientists will definitely need you to sheepdog them. There's no telling what kind of trouble they could get in or cause."
Kyle nodded wordlessly to Lovejoy, as he remained standing in front of the Captain's desk.
"And you have been briefed on the background of this... group.. colony. You know its hard to know what to call them really." Carrington said.
Clasping his hands behind the small of his back. "I have, Captain. And regardless of what label we choose to give their group, they are still human."
"Yes," She agreed. "It will be interesting to see how they have turned out."
"Agreed." Kyle stated flatly. "While we are operating under the direct authority of Starfleet Command and the UFP, do you have any special or additional orders for the scientists, or myself, Captain?"
"Just keep them safe and have eyes in the back of your head Commander. We need to make sure we are not taken by surprise. If they are fanatics as we believe them to be, having this ship at their disposal would be something they would want."
"Believe me when I tell you this, Captain," Kyle spoke frankly. "Not only am I a plank owner of Ely. I've given her a lot of my blood sweat and tears over the years. I'll be damned if anyone thinks they're taking her wothout me having a few well-placed words with them." There was a protective heat in his eyes as he spoke about the Elysium.
Yasmine smiled at that. "Good to hear Commander. Have you stowed your gear yet?"
"Petty Officer Milrok took my gear to the guest quarters that I've been assigned during my stay, Captain."
"Good then I suggest you go get changed into your dress uniform Commander, we are going down in the shuttle in under an hour." Yasmine said with a smile.
Kyle gave Carrington a curt nod tben turned and left, giving Lovejoy a polite nod as well.
Yasmine watched him go, wondering how this would go with such an officer on board.
