Season 6: Episode 2: Survival

As Mattias, Phoenix and Tristi entered their family tent, Mattias spoke first. "Alright, young lady," his tone firm. "First things first. Your mother and I are going to fix up your injuries. Then, we are going to discuss what just happened. Now sit down." He pointed to one of the chairs at their small dining table. His tone left no room for misunderstanding. He then moved off to where their emergency medical supplies were stored.
Tristi slumped and all but flung herself into a chair. She crossed her arms as she did so.
Phoenix sighed as she pulled her parker off. "Miran?" She called.
Miran came out of her and Tristi's room and froze. "What the hell happened to you Tristi?"
"Clary the slut happened. " Tristi replied sourly.
"Language!" Phoenix snapped out..
Mattias voice his agreement. "If you want to be as intelligent as she is, keep talking that way, young lady." It was very apparent that he was upset and getting more so by Tristi's attitude.
Grabbing an empty chair, Mattias set it up right in front of his daughter. Putting the med kit on the table, his demeanor softened some when he started to look over Tristi's injures. "Where does it hurt the most?" The anger in his voice lessened as he treated her.
"I have had worse" Tristi said softly, "She fights like a two year old"
Miran however was clenching her teeth. "Clary the slut just ran out of my good patience." She headed to grab a jacket.
Phoenix blocked her. "Gary has dealt with her." She told her sister.
"Did he brig her arse?" the 17 year old asked her older sister.
"Nope" Tristi replied from where Mattias was treating her face.
"Mir?" Mattias said softly as he continued to treat Teisti's wounds. "Please sit. While I love you for the fire you feel in your core right now, Cadet Clary is receiving a punishment fit for her position as a cadet in Starfleet. Her commanding officers are meting out that punishment as they feel appropriate. If you, or you, young lady," he looked pointedly at Tristi as he spoke, "go after her for this now, you both with be wholly in the wrong and she will have gained what she always felt she deserved. A feeling of moral superiority over you both. Once that happens, there will never be a win for you against her again."
When he finished treating Tristi, he looked in her eyes again, then stood, leaning forward and kissing her gently on her forehead. As he stood upright, he continued to speak. "Is it fair that you can't go out there and beat Clary to a pulp for what she did to your niece...your family? No, it isn't. "He looked at his sister-in-law and sighed softly.
"Every person in this family, aside from William and Elizabeth so far, thankfully, know all too well just how unfair life really is."He looked from Phoenix to Miran. "The both of you live with the truth that your brother and father, the rulers of your homeworld, want you both, your mother, your other brother and the twins dead for no other reason than you slighted him and he lost face in front of your entire world." He looked over at Tristi, a look of sadness filled his features.
"My dear Tristi, you had to live the hell you did, and survive in it, before we found you. No child should ever have to go through what you did. You deserved good patents, from day one, keeping you safe and loved."
He sighed sadly and his frown deepened. "And as for me, my first wife, my....." His chest rose and fell a bit faster. "My son..." his voice cracked at that point. "They were both murdered because of something I did to someone else's family...which started because of what they did to my baby sister..."
He shook his head and turned away briefly, before turning back to address both young women. "We all were given shitty cards the first deal. However, now...now we have each other! The rest of the universe out there can do what it wants, but in here, we are the best we can be, because we are a family. Clary? She has no idea what this is like. This mission is the first real adversity that she has ever faced. So, don't feel anger towards her. Feel pity. Pity that she will never know how this, " he moved his arms in circular motions encompassing them together. "Feels. She lashes out at you both because she thinks she's better than you. Well you know what? Let her. The more you give in to her needling, the better she feels about herself. If you really want to twist her up...ignore her. If she tries to insult you, smile at her. If she tries to belittle you in any way, laugh at her. She will stop when she realizes that she can't bother you any more."
"However," he raised a warning finger. "If she ever touches either of you first, put her down. If you see her strike a member of your family, show her the error of her ways. Phee and I will never be upset with you for defending yourselves. However, if you instigate the fight, you better believe that you will not be happy with the results. Do I make myself clear?" He looked from Tristi, to Miran, then back to Tristi.
Tristi nodded "Yes Sir"
"Sure," Miran stated. "I have been wanting an opportunity to kick her arse."
Mattias reached out and gently placed his left hand on Tristi's right shoulder. "Thank you, sweetheart," he said softly with a gentle smile. He then looked over at Miran. "Well, unless us catch her doing something, you can't touch her without being in the wrong, Mir." He glanced over to Phoenix for support.
"I don't think I will be wrong" Miran replied coolly. She looked at her sister. "She attacked a member of this family, But if she starts something, I will finish it. That I promise."
"I know and I will back you up as you know." Phee replied.
Mattias nodded quietly as he listened to his family. Finally, he said quietly. "Now, let's try to have a nice dinner and quiet evening."
Phoenix nodded and moved towards the area where the twins were.
Tristi shook her head however. "Not hungry, I think I would like to go to bed early."
Not wanting to pressure her too much, Mattias replied softly. "At least have a snack of something before you get in bed, sweetheart. It doesn't have to be anything big, just some fruit or something."
Tristi gave a shrug and grabbed an apple then retreated to the sleeping area she shared with Miran.
Phoenix came out of the twins section and crossed to Mattias. "Twins are ok. They will wake up soon. And I swear it took all my control not to skin that cadet."
Mattias moved over to embrace his wife. "I know, Phee," he replied softly into her ear. "Had she been a male cadet, I probably would have tossed him about the command tent. I am still very angry that our daughter is still being targeted and bullied. I have had enough of this shit!"
"I cannot believe that Triston is seeing that girl. He must be really blind." She leaned against him.
Miran rolled her eyes. "Or she is really good in bed."
Mattias couldn't help but chuckle at Miran's comment. Without looking at his sister-in-law, he replied. "Unfortunately, for most of my gender, the later usually causes the former, Mir."
The 17 year old shrugged. "Well I am sure younger males are affected worse. Anyway, I am going out for a bit. I need air."
"Miran, no trouble do you understand?" Phoenix said.
"Yeah, I won't go looking for that slut. I have other things to do." Miran grabbed her jacket and headed out.
Mattias watched Miran leave while he continued to hold Phoenix. Quietly, he spoke to her. "How long do you think? You know your sister far better than I do."
"She is not going to go after Clary. She will wait for her to act. then she will kick arse and when Gary pulls Miran on the carpet she will throw her royal title in his face and basically refuse to accept any punishment." Phoenix sighed.
Mattias sighed softly as well. "Should we speak to Gary, or do you think it will be an issue? In the end, titles or not, Miran would be simply protecting her niece. As long as she is simply reactive, and doesn't go hunting, there wouldn't be any reason to pull her to the carpet."
"No, I am not warning Gary," Phoenix smiled. "He can so deal with Miran if it happens. She will be fine."
Nodding, Mattias then kissed the top of Phoenix's head. "Guess it's just the two of us for dinner then?"
"Sounds good," his wife replied with a warm smile.
The pair then got things ready and enjoyed a light supper, before spending some time with the twins.
