Mission: Season 6: Episode 5: A church beyond heaven
Location: Deck 12-Primary Sickbay
Timeline: MD3
1044 words - 2.1 OF Standard Post Measure

Marine Captain Ket came stumbling into the sickbay. Ket had been re-calibrating the gravimetric field displacement manifold, onboard his Gryphon Fighter Bomber, but in doing so had over loaded a capacitor which had promptly exploded in his face. Exploding was perhaps an exaggeration, more like sparked, it certainly had left a couple of small cuts on his forehead and he thought he looked like his face had been in the sun for way too long. Ket had done what he could to his small cuts as best he could from the medic pack out of the nearby trauma locker, but he logically concluded, he had done a pretty bad job on it. So he headed up to the sickbay. On his way, he felt himself getting a bit dizzy and he had to stop several times, as he walked into the sickbay Ket had another dizzy spell and had to hold onto the door frame frame as he crossed the threshold into the medical facility.

The Nurse on Reception looked up sharply and called out for help as she skirted around the desk to catch the injured Marine in the flight gear. Attempting to hold the injured man up, Carolyn's initial call had drawn attention and J'Air, seeing some of what seemed to be happening at the main doors, sped across to assist with holding the folding man upright. She called to Kensington to fetch a hover gurney which he did instantly and when he and the gurney arrived the three medical staff gently lifted their new patient onto it.

"Thanks" the ACMO said to the two others for their help and she began to steer the hovering temporary bed across to a vacant Med-bay. "Ben can you take it back again please, after you've helped me lift the gentleman onto the med-bed." J'Air continued calmly, trying to tell what was happening to the new arrival just by looking over what seemed to be his presenting symptoms. "Carolyn, thank you. Please can you log this patient in for me, I'll fill some details in on the PaDD as I ascertain them, but in the meantime, just put that we've admitted a patient and a brief description of how he arrived and what you initially saw. We can fill in the gaps as we go along."

As she was talking, Matt and J'Air lifted the airman onto the biobed and Ben guided the hover-gurney away. J'Air began to raise the Bio-Arch over the bed and her fingers flashed over the LCARS as she instructed it to scan and diagnose - the routine that welcomed all incoming casualties. She was operating almost on auto-pilot whilst she was talking to Carolyn but turned to the person in the bed as soon as she stopped talking.

"I'm sorry" she apologised. "I'm not ignoring you, I promise I'm already working on trying to find out what's going on with your injuries. Could you try to tell me a little about what happened please? That will help me work out more ways to help you."

Though Ket was not new to the Elysium, the large ship did have a crew of over two thousand, and Ket did not often find himself interacting with senior staff, since he had only joined the crew just prior to the Elysium's arrival in this new galaxy. Ket nodded politely from his position on the bio-bed. He was re-assured by the sickbays staff's professionalism. "I was re-calibrating the gravimetric field displacement manifold, on my Gryphon Fighter Bomber. I think I managed to overload a capacitor."

J'Air smiled faintly. "I won't even pretend to know what a capacitor is in that context" she admitted "but your scans do indicate an electrical charge (presumably a relatively mild one judging by the fact that you haven't killed yourself or blown the fuses on half of the ship)" the smile seemed to try to extend a little upwards at the edges of her lips but she shut that down very quickly.

"I'm very pleased to be able to say that the charge doesn't appear to have entry and exit wounds so somehow you manged to discharge it - perhaps rubber soled boots?" she looked sideways at the boots he was wearing and seemed to conclude silently that they could have been the saving grace. "Your face will need some regeneration, obviously and I'm just going to give you some analgesic for the pain." As she spoke she was loading a hypospray ready to put it up to his neck.

"Are you okay with this?" she asked moments before she was about to administer it, feeling sure he wouldn't object but leaving him the choice for a few seconds.

Ket nodded slowly, slightly taken back by the doctor's attentiveness and barrage of questions. It was re-assuring however, and demonstrated both a keen knowledge of her craft and caring persona. "That is acceptable" responded the Vulcan

"I'm going to have to keep you overnight to make sure that you haven't taken any electrical charge deeper inside though." she went on, Any effects will manifest by morning if there's anything untoward going on but the scans are clear and I'm pretty sure you won't have any more trouble after we've regenerated the surface tissue." Shrugging apologetically, she said "We just have to be sure".

Ket shuffled in his bio-bed from side to side "a satisfactory arrangement" responded Ket plainly. But remembering his mothers advice about trying to 'ease the mood,' something Ket could not get his head around as a Vulcan, Ket said "This bio-bed is certainly more comfortable than those in the pilot's quarters on deck thirty six."

"That's good to know". J'Air smiled. "I'll just input your scan results and data and then I can hand you over to the next shift. I hope you have a pleasant stay" she continued, all the while still gently gliding agile fingers over the LCARS and completing his "Admission".

Turning to Matt, J'Air thanked him for his help and suggested that he might "Finish up and prepare to hand over prior to signing out, as the next shift would be in shortly. Matt acknowledged with a brisk but friendly "Ma'am" and went off to get things started for the switch over.
