Sami stood in front of the XO's office, feeling a little like she did when she was called to the principal's office in school, though she reminded herself that he hadn't called her, this was all her idea, and she wasn't in trouble, she was merely thinking about her future. No, she was more than thinking about her future, she was finally doing something about it. She rang the chime and waited, her padd with her letter of intent and the list of her qualifications in her hand, for what seemed like an eternity.
Inside Gary was looking over various reports from the departments chiefs and their respective 'wish lists' when his chime sounded. He pushed the PaDDS to the side, sat up a little straighter all the while wondering who it could be. He didn't have any appointments scheduled, not that really meant anything. Phoenix, Lia and Liselle could walk in at anytime without notice. "Only one way to find out Gary." He told himself as he said "Enter" and waited to see who came through the door.
When the door opened Sami came to attention, speaking as slowly and clearly as she could, "Sir, Crewman Samantha Justice. Do you have time to see me?"
Gary stood up as Sami entered. "Miss Justice." He said warmly, He gestured toward a seat in front of the desk. " I always have time. Please have a seat. Would you like something from the replicator?"
Sami had just had a drink, a blue powerade, before coming in, but now she was suddenly parched, Probably my nerves... "Some water with lemon would be nice, Sir." She answered politely, "I've actually come here to discuss my Academy application, Sir."
Moving to the replicator, Gary got Sami her water with lemon and moved back to her. Handing it to her, he sat behind his desk and nodded. "Alright Samantha what would you like to talk about in regards to your Academy application?"
"Thank you." Sami said as she received her drink. Taking a sip she turned her attention back to the XO, "And I've got my letter and my application with me for you to review, Sir."
"Excellent." Gary replied with a smile. "I like someone who is organized and prepared. Stay that way and you'll go far" He quipped as he held his hand out to review Sami's letter and application.
"I learned a lot about organization from Liorga." Sami replied, though she still missed her mentor, "I think with my time in service and my qualifications I might even be able to come in as a second grade."
Gary nodded as he read over Sami's letter then turned his attention to her application. After a few moments he sat back in his chair and looked across his desk at her. "Samantha..." He paused for a moment before continuing. "I have to say that is an excellent letter and your application is just as good. I think you can go in as a third grade. It's that good."
"That would be amazing, sir." Sami answered earnestly, the realization that she had just been accepted... by a man without the authority to do so, at least for the Academy in San Francisco, "I presume then that that would be for the Academy here on Elysium, sir." No reason to leave now, I guess. She thought, though she missed Anya intensely still, even after being dropped and the object of her desires transferring away, the pain was still sharp.
"Samantha, you presume right. That is most definitely the case for the Academy here on the Elysium. You could probably teach a few of the engineering classes with what you have learned and experienced here." Gary replied honestly. "In addition, I'd hate to see you leave and I know quite a few who feel just as strongly." He leaned forward to make his next point. "Samantha the world is in the palm of your hand. You have amazing potential and I'd hate to see you waste it."
"Thank you, Sir." Sami smiled, she had really needed this sort of encouragement for a long time, and now finding it had given her hope for her life for the first time in a long time, "I'll do everything I can not to disappoint."
"Samantha." Gary started, "You never have to worry about disappointing me. All you have to do is not disappoint yourself and everything will fall into place. Stay true to yourself and your dreams and you will go far, the sky is the limit for you."

Beautiful post. A lost young woman finds the encouragement and comfort she needs from an unlikely place and we're better for getting to read it.

A beautiful, sweet post about following your dreams and having the courage to do so. Along with some much needed encouragement. Made all
the better by Sami's gifted writer who knows how to make a truly memorable and endearing character.
