A Private's life for me

Mission: Season 3: Episode 4: Cause and Effect
Location: Marine Country
Timeline: MD 1
675 words - 1.4 OF Standard Post Measure

The punch connected solidly with Durak's jaw, sending him to the mat of the boxing ring hard. He shook his head to try to regain his composure. He spotted the glove of his opponent reaching out to offer a hand back up. He looked up at his opponent, Sgt. Sohl and grasped the glove with his.

"Not bad, PFC Durak," Sohl complimented. "Are you alright?"

Durak nooded after he stood. "Yes, Sergeant."

Sohl nodded. "Good. Alright, First Platoon dismissed," he said to the Marines surrounding the ring.

Durak made his way out of the ring, moving his jaw back and forth as he removed his gloves.

"Hey Durak!" called a human male of terran african decent with dark hair, jogging towards Durak.

"Hey Chuks," Durak greeted his friend and room mate. Durak and PFC Zane Chuks first met at SOI and had become good friends since.

"How's that glass jaw of yours? I though Sergeant Sohl killed you," Chuks chuckled.

Durak grinned as the pair exited the gymnasium. "Has anyone ever beaten Sohl in a ring?"

Chuks paused for a moment as he thought. "Two. One did and the other could. Major Azhul and Warrant Officer Man'darr. Major Azhul simply outlasted Sohl and wore him down, since Andorians can't fight for long periods of time from what I heard. As for Warrant Officer Man'darr, he could probably knock Sohl's head off in one hit--the guy is a Capellan after all. Those guys are basically tanks on two legs."

"So, did you hear that the Major is seeing that horse in Security?" Durak asked as the two headed down the corridor side by side.

Chuks nodded. "Yep. Good for her, I guess," he shrugged. "Not my cup of tea. But as long as they're happy, who cares? Why? Are you jealous? You got a hard on for the Major?" Chuks was now chuckling.

"No way. I mean yeah, I'd bang her, sure, but she's my CO and a little old for me though," Durak said with a grin.

"Yeah. Besides, I've seen you eyeing that new Freshman Science Cadet. You know, the hot one with the blonde hair," Chuks continued.

"Oh come on. I could never date a cadet--they're future officers. It would never work," Durak defended. "But Lance Corporal Nina Litterest is another story," he chuckled.

"Oh? Does she know?" Chuks asked, smiling widely at his friend.

"No," Durak sighed as the two entered their quarters and he flopped down onto his rack. He was always happy to have the bottom bunk. "Besides, not many would want to date a Cardassian."

"Oh no, not that bullshit again," Chuks replied, turning to his friend. "So what if you're Cardassian. You'll never know until you ask. I mean, do you want to end up like Gunny Rhodes? A hundred twenty and married to only the Corps for the rest of your life?"

The comment made Durak laugh. "Alright, maybe I'll ask her the next time I see her," he relented.

"I'm going to take a shower and then we'll head to the mess and grab something to eat once you shower," Chuks offered.

"Sounds good," Durak replied as he absently rubbed his jaw.

[["ALL SENIOR STAFF TO THE BRIDGE. ALL HANDS TO DEPARTURE STATIONS."]] Was broadcast over the ship.

"Ah, fuck my life!" came the voice of Chuks as the door to the lavatory closed. That meant they would have to stay in their quarters until the departure order was lifted.

'Great, here we go again,' Durak thought, staring at the bottom of the top bunk that was above him. A part of him had hoped to be reposted to a planetary base--someplace more stable. Yet, the other part enjoyed the Elysium and even serving under Major Azhul. Besides, the ship was full of eye candy--even if most of them were officers. He then began to think about Lance Corporal Litterest. True, she had been nice to him the entire time he had been with the detachment and she was a damn good fighter and Marine.
