Mission: Season 3: Episode 4: Cause and Effect
Location: Deck 34, Engineering Support
1209 words - 2.4 OF Standard Post Measure

River had been wandering around the lower decks on one of her routine security checks, so far she had closed two Jeffries tubes and returned one lost child to their day nurse. So is far as days go it was slow. She was a little saddened to not have Lieutenant S'hib with her and to have no reason for his absence annoyed her greatly she was looking forward to finding out more about this species and his home planet. So she now found herself wandering the corridors alone.

Walking around the corner towards Engineering support River took in a sharp breath as a blur of fur departed the corridor and into the room adjacent, S'hib? she thought but then realised the image was much shorter than she recalled.

Walking to the now closed doors she paused a moment, "Maybe he was on all fours?" She thought whilst battling her urges to simply leave. Realising she wasn't going to miss the opportunity to explore another part of the ship sh proceeded to press the doors operating panel which responded quickly by opening with a swish. Walking through the threshold she looked around and to her surprise, nobody was around. "Lieutenant S'hib?"

The Diminutive Vulpine paused in his steps, his large ears twitching, as he took perhaps a bit to long to mentally translate what he'd just been called. "Uhm...I know I don't really look like the Sequus," he said cheerfully as he turned to look at The humanoid, his small frame clad in a Heavily modified Engineering uniform that clanked with impact plating. "Not him, but a pleasure to meet you," he grinned softly, his words suffering a slight delay as the translator buffered them. He shifted his posture slightly causing the Plates to shift, a small Carbine attached to a Magnetic Holster across his back.

"Warrant officer Reo'tharna Sandtail of the Arten confederacy Defense fleet at your service ma'am," he said with a quick bow.

'The Arten confederacy Defense fleet' Though River looking at the individual with a more bewildered look than when she had met S'hib, at least with S'hib she knew before she joined but this... Well, she clearly overlooked this. Metaphorically picking up her jaw of the floor she smiled daintily. "Hello, I am Ensign River I just moved here from the Academy. Its a pleasure to me you... Urm what is The Arten confederacy Defense fleet?" She asked without missing a beat before saying and "What species are you?" River always was direct in her line of questioning, especially when caught off guard like this.

The Short Vulpine laughed softly his tail swaying slowly. "I'm an Arten," he says giving her a Good look at his small body. "We're a Single system government, Federation surrounds us on all sides," He Shrugged.

"Arten" River said trying the foreign word around in her mouth for the first time before asking, "But you're not in the federation? But you're in Starfleet?" The concept was certainly alien and confusing to her Elas had joined the federation not long after Captain Kirk had visited, she didn't think they'd be accepted now.

"Well...I'm part of a Commission From the CDF, The Confederacy's voting on whether or not to Join the federation this year, So The CDF has Diplomatic transfers with Star Fleet, to See if we can Integrate the Fleets Together should the vote go through," Reo smiled softly and shrugged.

Listening intently once again River was finding new species and new ways of understanding she thought she had read about them all but as it turned out the federation was much larger than her backwater world of Elas. "That makes sense, and how is the integration going?" She asked shifting her weight from her toes to the balls fo her feel, her arms crossed and her face frowning in extreme concentration.

"Well..." Reo muttered as he looked over the humanoid, his large ears twitching as he thought of how to word it. "The Artanian Senate is currently for integration, They Represent my Home world Artania, But The Cordian Senate is All mixed up, Some of them want to Integrate, some don't want anything to do with the federation, and still others are currently Undecided." he shook his head his Shaggy mane of furlike hair shifting with the movement. " And the Telachan Senate has yet to disclose their decision in the matter, Likely waiting to hear back from the Defense fleet about how well we could integrate."

River was easily getting lost in the different senates and people who required for integration, this is why she was a security officer and not a diplomat. "And what do you think?" She asked curious to know his personal opinion, did he like Starfleet or was he just ordered to be here for his government to see how well they'd fit in.

Reo Rubbed his muzzle gently and hummed. "Well...Integrating our fleets would be....a task," he muttered. "As you can no doubt guess by my uniform, we're more...militaristic then the federation," he shook his head. "The federation is culturally different from all three Arten Home worlds...Not clan based Like Artania, Not As militaristic as Cordia, and Not as..." he frowned his ears folding back. "As...Well for lack of a better word....secretive as Telacha."

He shook his head for a moment before exhaling. "if we were to Join the federation I doubt there would be much cultural change on Cordia or Telacha for many, many decades," He muttered. "From what I can Tell though Artania is very similar in culture to the Andorians in the Federation...so There would be less of a shock among the federation citizens."

Quickly jumping at the opportunity "My homeworld Elas is has a clan bases system and I don't think we've changed very much since we become part of the federation. We may be a little more culturally diverse now but I know we haven't had to sacrifice any of our own ways and beliefs. I don't see why it would have to be any different for you three homeworlds." And in her mind she thought, 'And Starfleet holds the most secrets'.

"You'd be surprised," Reo muttered quietly before he shook his head and smiled. "Regardless, I get to experience the joys of Star fleet first hand During my tenure aboard the ship," he said his eyes lighting up with enthusiastic energy.

Feeling the enthusiasm roll of off Reo she smiled, "Well I suppose I better get back to my security routine and I've interrogated you enough but if you're lucky I'll corner you next time and ask you some more questions about your people" River teased.

"Hey Maybe Next Time you can Can Join me on the firing range," he offered as he Turned to Return to his Duties.

"Sounds like a plan" River returned with a smile before turning about and proceeded to leave, it would seem she was beginning to find her footing aboard the ship and not letting her usual character traits stand in her way, her mother would be proud.
