As with proper protocol after bringing in new personnel, the Chief of the Department has to meet with the head of Security. Three of the new Engineers accompied him to the office. They were Agricultural Engineer Lt. JG. Marcellus Sattine an Dasa, Diagnostics Engineer Ensign Tarr Zell and Computer Systems Engineer Ensign Napoleon Bond.
As they walked in to the Security Office, Victor and his team saw the Chief of Logistics leaving the Security Office with the new crew members of his team.
"Lieutenant, can I help you with something?" Lia had noticed another group turning up in her department, a quick glance at her diary showed her nothing. "I take it your not lost, so this must be business".
"Oh just a formality Commander," Victor says, , "All new personnel have to be cleared by security. These three came on within the last month. There is a security protocol which an Engineer must have in order to replicate materials. Each one of these are unable to do so. First I thought it was a malfunction in the system but Napoleon pin pointed that the three of them do not have security clearance to do so. All the other Engineers can because they have been here awhile."
"I see, and you want them cleared by us. Ok we're not overly occupied right now so I'll do it myself". She moved over to her desk and sat down, "Right do you have their PaDD's so I can check them on the computer?"
Each one handed their PaDDs to the Security Chief.
"There you go Commander," Victor says with a smile. He waited until this formality was over with so he could discuss Security Procedures in Engineering.
Tarr Zell knew there will be a red flag will come up due to him helping the Maquis in The Badlands when he was ten years old.
Two of the Engineer's were a simple check and pass, but Lia would probably question them to make sure. But one Ensign Zell produced a red flag, a Marquis red flag. "Ensign Zell, you want to explain this red flag? It reports here that you have Marquis leanings, I'll admit you were young but that doesn't give you protection from the activity you indulged in". She raised her head to look straight at the Ensign, "If I find any reason to doubt your loyalty, your tenure on this vessel will be short lived".
Tarr grunted like a gorilla would do quietly because he had this conversation before. "Commander, living in the Badlands were not an easy way to live. The Cardassians were capturing my neighbors and family. At the time, we were not part of the Federation. Only refuge were the Maquis who help hide us. Eventually we escaped the Badlands to Bajor. A Bajoran family had taken us who have escaped had taken us in to work on their farm. I helped hide Maquis as a child from both Cardassians and the Federation. Last time I saw one was twelve years old which is the year we escaped the Badlands. The Academy accepted my brother, sister and I. There are not many Ingavi who served at the Academy. I feel this is my calling Commander."
"Ensign, your explanation is welcome. But you've made it this far with the help of others, now your standing before me and I understand your reasons. But I'm Star Fleet Intelligence trained, I look at things a little differently to other Security Officers". She stood up and approached the Ensign, "Now before we end up offending each other, lets start at the beginning". Lia now sat on her desk in front of the Ensign, "Point one, the reasons behind your actions are not in question. Point two, you seem to have made it through the academy with the same difficulty as myself. Point three, If I thought you were a serious risk to this vessel. You wouldn't be standing here talking to me, you'd be in the brig". She now stood up and returned back behind her desk, "As stated, your age doesn't excuse you from your actions of assisting the Marquis. That being said, your more recent actions prove your willingness to accept Federation rules". Lia now handed Zell his PaDD, "Welcome to the Elysium Ensign Zell, I hope you enjoy your tour with us". She stood up and extended her hand, "I know, these Security checks are a pain in the butt. But someone has to do it".
"This is true," Tarr answers with relief as he holds his PaDD now. "Am I free to go now?"
Marcellus asks as well. "Are we free to go?"
"Before you answer that Commander," Victor says, "After they go, I would like to discuss with you Security Engineering interactions. Strictly routine about his many security personnel are assigned to Engineering and in case of emergency situations where we have to be using the Transporters in Engineering. Like the old saying, prepare for the worst case scenarios, hope for the best."
Looking at the three new crew, Lia simply nodded and pointed to the door. "Dismiss, in short get outta here". She now turned to the Lieutenant, "So what's on your mind?"
"We have not had any incidents I am aware on this ship but I have been on ships where not enough security near Transporters have caused problems," Victor answers, "I just need to know what protocols are in place if an Engineer feels there is a threat. On my side, the crew member will inform me of the threat and I will notify you or your Assistant Chief. "
Lia thought for a moment, "On a ship of this size, Security can't be everywhere. So what I normally do is talk to a department chief, and get them to suggest a small in house Security team". She crossed to her chair and sat down, then opened a drawer and passed over a PaDD. "This used to be your departments old in house team, most have now left. I guess this means your going to have to vet your department to find at least six, one being either a Lieutenant JG or an Ensign. The other five can be enlisted men, and you send that six to me". She stood back up and placed a paper chart on a pin board stuck on the wall, "This chart has a four week cycle on it, the team you pick will go through a four week intensive training regime. At the end their score will be calculated, those who pass become your Security team. Those who fail have a choice, they can reapply or you can pick replacements". Lia now turned to face Victor, "So, what do you think? Do you have six people who can act as your departments Security team?"
"Tarr Zell, the Ingavi Ensign would be ideal," Victor replies. "Ensign Louis Bordeaux would be another good choice. I will find four others. I think that covers all we needed to talk about. Is there anything I can do to help you? Do you need a new replicator some place?"
"Hold on there, Zell?? The one person who had a red flag against them??" Lia looked at the Lieutenant, "Or is this your way of bringing him into the fold? Because it might back fire". She then thought about Victor's offer, "This department has a very old grumpy replicator, we could use a new one". If Victor insisted on Zell, Lia would have to tell the Captain. She would have the final say on the subject, all this because a ten year old helped someone.
Victor sense that was not a good day idea, so he replied, "I will send you a list of ten to choose from. It is your Department. I will suggest one of higher rank to help with security which is Tonya. She has all the qualities one would expect in security. So are we in agreement that is you will make the decision on which of the ten will help with security in Engineering?"
Lia sat down and thought about what Victor had said, "How about we ask Tonya? If she's to lead this little group, perhaps it might go better if she's included in the choice of personnel". She looked at Victor, "I find including key personnel in the make up of any sub unit, helps that unit gel quicker than if its imposed on them".
"Agreed," Victor says smiling, "Especially since the connection Tonya and I have plus it is in realm ..l." Victor paused himself right there because Lia does not need to know that one day Victor hopes to be married to Tonya. "I will check with Tonya after she gets back from the Away Mission. I feel we covered everything. So unless you do not have anything to add, you van dismiss me." The last remark was because Victor always follows the chain of command as in Lia is a commander and he is just a lieutenant.
Lia caught a slight reluctance in the Lieutenants response, "Something I should know about Tonya Lieutenant? Or something I should know about BOTH of you?" Standing back up, she moved closer to Victor. "You two wouldn't be an item would you??" Lia now smiled and sat on the edge of her desk again, "No need to answer that, Dismiss Lieutenant".
Victor was about to answer that but there was no need like she said. He thought most of the Senior Staff knew she was this reality version of his late wife from the reality he came from plus genetically, she is Lara's mother. "Good day Commander."
