***Previously***

"My...my head!!" He tried to sit up, but every movement seemed to exasperate his pain. He kept moaning in agony

“Computer Alert medical of an emergency in Lt Whavis quarters!” Baeryn shouted.

“Medical has been alerted and are in route now.”

Baeryn spoke to David, “Try to stay calm, they’ll be here soon.” She squeezed his right thigh to let him know she was still there. Baeryn knew first hand how excruciating head pain can be.

David kept moaning in agony, his rate of breathing increasing, until suddenly, he exhaled, and went completely still. Too still.

“DAVID!!”

***And Now, The Conclusion***

Baeryn had managed to clothe herself before the medical team arrived at her quarters. They had been unable to wake David with the tools they brought and immediately suggested he be taken to sick bay. Baeryn hadn't been able to give them much to go on, not entirely sure of why David was in the state he was in. The group arrived in a shimmering light, both medical officers jumping into action. She felt helpless. "I don't know what happened, he was fine and then....." Her voice trailed off.

The gorn nodded as he opened up his med bag and planted a few scanners on the marine. " Let'sss get him onto the ssstreacher. His brain'sss electro chemistry is off the chartsss. " He said as he attached a monitor as the stretcher extended beside David.

Baeryn tried to assist the nurses as they did what the Gorn instructed. "He fell asleep, then...when...he woke up he wasnt making much since. I tried to ask him about the dream and it was almost as if he couldn't comprehend what I was asking, like his mind was overloaded." Baeryn refused to let go of David's hand as he was quickly repositioned and hoked up to a number of machines.

" What wasss he sssaying it may be important. " the doctor said as he furiously looked at the results he was looking at. David's amygdala had spiked to levels of brain activity that should be possible. It was if someone had switched off a large amount of brain memory that had long been dormonet.

"He kept asking for someone named Jakob in his sleep but when I asked him who that was the pain started. I-I don't..." Baeryn was struggling to stay calm, she had to keep herself together, for David. "He's never talked about a Jakob before. What's wrong with him? Is he going to be okay?!"

" He'sss going to be fine my dear." The gorn replied calmly even though he had no idea what was going wrong here. " Doesss he have any next of kin or sssurviving family who may know who thisss Jakob isss?" the gorn inquired.

Baeryn shook her head slowly, "No....there isn't anyone....at least I don't believe so."

Off course nothing is ever that easy thr gorn thought to himself. " Okay then let's get him to sssickbay and into the full body scanner. We can use itsss brain ssscan to ssstabilise him and maybe he can tell us who thisss jakob isss."

"Okay..." Baeryns voice came out weak and unsure. She watched as the medical staff started to move David and she followed, not willing to let go of his hand. Not until they made her.

The gorn lead the way until they reached medical where the machine was already prepared. Placing a few nodes on David's head before sliding him into the machine. " Okay let'sss sssee what we can do as the machine activated and he being running the program. " David can you hear me." He asked calmly.

From inside the scanner, David moaned softly, pain heavy in his voice. His vitals were registering high heartrate and respiration levels.

" David who is Jakob?" The gorn asked as he inputs a command to give the corporal something to lower his heart rate.

David's pain caused Baeryn to squeeze his hand tightly. She wanted him to know she was there but not interrupt the doctor as he tried to question him.

The gorn figures worked as he furiously worked at the controls. Slowly he brought the marines brain chemistry back into line, but he'd never seen anything like this. As it began to move into the safe levels he dared give the man a pain killer to ease the pain rushing through his body.

As soon as the drugs were introduced, David's virals fluctuated slightly, then started to crash. His breathing stopped and his heart rate flatlined.

" No no no." The gorn yelled as he furiously worked to save the marine.

Suddenly, David's vitals popped back up into normal sinus rhythm and he took in a deep breath.

Baeryn wasn't sure if she was breathing, she watched the doctor with fear in her eyes. She knew speaking would only cause distraction, so instead she stood there squeezing David's hand trying to hold herself together.

Slowly, the hand that had been limp the entire time that she held it, started to curl its fingers around her hand, strength slowly returning to it. "Jakob..." he whispered, only semi-concious.

" Who is he, David." The gorn said softly.

Eyes still closed, David breathed out on single word. "...brother..."

" You have a brother? It'sss not in your file." the doctor replied as an idea began to form in his mind as to what had happened.

"....twin....." David's eyes still remained closed, as if he qas talking in his sleep, or in a trance. "....died...." It appeared that, in this state, David's mind would only allow him to reply in single word answers.

And everything started to fall into place. " I think i know what'sss happened. Hisss people mussst have removed the memory of thisss Jakob, but whatever they did is breaking down." the gorn said out loud to his team.

David moaned in pain again and his vitals started to fluctuate wildly. "AAAAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!" He suddenly screamed out, before going limp again. Blood began to trickle from his ears, nose and eyes.

Baeryn went rigged, "Can we fix it? How do we stop it?!" Her voice was rushed.

" We could reconnect the sssectionsss of hisss brain that hold the memory of hisss brother or we could sssever it permanently. " The gorn said calmly, though inside he was panicking.

"Can we reconnect it? Give him access to that part of his brain that houses those memories?" Baeryn's words were rushed.

The gorn opened his mouth to speak, but an alarm from the computer made any decision for him. " Ssscrap, sssomeone get me the neutron regulator we'll have to re connect it." he said moving to his patiant.

" David thisss is going to hurt. " He said as he took the tool from his nurse.

Less than a minute into the treatment, David started to moan in discomfort. Then, the moans increased in both volume and intensity. "Ahhh.....AAAHHHHH....AAAAARRGGGHHHH!!!" The hand that Baeryn was holding suddenly clenched tight in an autonomous reaction, the sound of bones cracking could be heard.

Baeryn gasped but her scream was silent. She refused to remove her hand, feeling the bones bend in ways they weren’t meant to. She would hold on for David, she could do this. Clenching her teeth she sharply inhaled.

The gorn worked as fast as he could as he connected up the brain tissue that hadn't been connected in many a year doing his best to concentrate on the work. As every connection was made the moaning from David began to quieten.

Finally, after what seemed like hours, David's body finally went limp, and his vitals dropped down into a normal rhythm. His clenched gand finally went slack and released Baeryn's badly injured hand.

Sthilg let out a sigh as he finished. This was one operation he hoped he'd never be doing again.

Baeryn released the breath she had been holding when David's grip loosened. His chest was still rising and falling, the only sure sign he was still with her. She bit back a whimper as she pulled her broken hand from David's. The pain was causing her to feel nauseous but she refused to leave his side.

"Here let me take a look at that." Sthilg said as he lowered himself down to look at Baeryn's broken hand.

Baeryn lifted her already purpling hand to the doctor, wincing at just the site of it. "It's not that bad." She lied.

"My dear you're a terrible liar." The gorn said warmly as his artificial arm turned to a scanner. " Hold ssstill i can fix this." He said reaching for his medbag.

Silver started to line Baeryns obsidian eyes while the doctor worked on her hand she looked at David. The tears weren't caused by the physical pain she was experiencing but at the thought she had almost lost the male she loved. The events had taken place so fast she barely had time to register them until now. In a low whisper she asked, "Will he be okay?"

" He will my dear." The gorn said as he worked on fixing her hand. " El Aurian's are tough customersss. He'll need to be kept under close monitoring as his brain get re adjusted. I can't believe that wasn't on his file."

On the biobed, David breathed normally, the battle to save his life, on the outside complete, now the real battle would begin.

The one in his mind.
