The sleek shuttle cruised over the treetops over what used to be called Montana. Phoenix sat at the controls and plotted minute course changes. Gone was the bleached blond hair she had rocked since early on in her undercover mission, gone was the bajoran nose and her blue eyes were back, no longer covered by contacts. She was nervous. It had been 3 months since she had been pulled off of active duty. 3 months since she had seen her children and her family. Beside her sat the one constant in her life in recent months, and she was silent as she piloted them to their destination.

It was wilderness, as far as the eye could see. Slowing the craft, she brought it into a landing pattern. "We will need to go on foot from now on." she said softly as the shuttle landed.

Mattias was quiet as well. There wasn't much to say at this point. The Epsilon Protocol had been successfully completed, save for a few minor loose ends that he would ensure were dealt with by years end, personally.

He was anxious, for the woman he loved, to be reunited with her family. He was also nervous as to how he would be received by them. Whatever happened, he would always love this woman, and only this woman.

As the shuttle settled on the ground, he reached over and gently rubbed the knuckles of his left hand against the right side of her face. "Lead the way, My Queen." He gave her a soft, loving grin.

"Just do not call me that in front of the family." she said with a smile and kissed his fingers.

"You got it." He smiled and winked at her. Then he asked, "Two questions. One, while in front of them, what should I call you, and two....what do they know about both me and us?"

"My mother and brother know nothing really, other than you were the one who pulled me from the arena. Miran on the other hand, well she knows that you and I had a relationship back on the Scott. And you can call me Phee if you like." She grabbed her uniform jacket and shrugged it on. "Its about a 30 minute walk"

Nodding slowly as he listened, he pulled on his uniform jacket as well. He had the odd thought again, that he seemed to miss wearing the vest and gunbelt from the Black Watch. "So, keep the public displays of affection to a minimum?"

He exited the shuttle first, then held his right hand out, to help her down.

She smiled and let him help her out of the shuttle. "At least until we get everyone settled. I think Mother and Kyian will be happy to remain on Earth which will be good."

Once Phoenix was standing on the ground, Mattias spun her to him, then dipped her. While she was down, looking up at him, he gave her a mischievous grin. "So, if I must be on my best behaviour, I assure you, when the time is right...I won't be." There was a hunger in his voice as he finished speaking. He then leaned in and kissed her deeply.

Her mind went to mush again and she slid her hands up into his hair as she kissed him back. Gods, this man could drive sane thought from her at any time. He was dangerous.

After a few passionate beats, Mattias finally came back up for air. "Whew!" He exhaled with a huge grin. "You, my love are very dangerous. You always know just how to light my fires. That kiss will hold me...for a while." He gave her a sultry wink, then brought her back to her feet. "Now, I'd really love to meet you family."

"Me? You need to look in a mirror" she said as she took a breath. "Any more of that and we would have been back in the shuttle." She turned and got her bearings. "This way. Oh and keep an eye out. Pallas may have had his guns spiked by my Innocence but it will not stop him."

Nodding silently, Mattias slipped into combat mode, his well-trained senses scanning for any sign of danger.

Phoenix moved away from the shuttle and into the trees. There was no path, that he could see. But Phoenix seemed to be following some sort of markings. She moved through the trees, her shoes soundless as she avoided branches and such on the ground. Her hand rested on her hip, where her phaser was but she did not draw it.

Mattias moved just as silently alongside Phoenix, as together, they moved as one, deeper into the forest. After a short while, he thought that he had begun to recognize the faint markings that they were following.

It was close to 30 minutes after they started, she paused and listened. Reaching out she brushed her fingers over the trunk of a tree and bird song erupted all around them. It was natural sounding. And it covered up the sound of dura-steal grating against itself as a passage opened at the foot of the tree.

Mattias was impressed with the sophisticated camouflage system that was in use here. "I guess we've made it, Honey?"

She nodded and crouched down to climb down the ladder that was there. "One of the ways in anyway."

Once Phoenix had descended the ladder far enough, Mattias followed. As he dropped below the opening, he saw the controls for the concealed hatch, and closed it. Then he finished moving down the ladder. Once he was standing in the tunnel, he asked, "Next?"

She smiled. And pulled from her pocket a small lens. She held it up and looked through it. "This way." she said lowering the lens. "No one has been through here in months. Secure for now." She led the way down the tunnel and when it forked she took the right fork.

"I must say, this is an excellent fortress you have here, sweetheart. Exactly how much area does this complex cover?"

"I brought it shortly after I arrived on Earth. 120 hectares. Was cheap because the government did not have any use for it. I hired a builder recommended by Harmony, a cadet I went through with. Her family has a similar complex beneath their farm. The Tunnels are not that extensive, but they are confusing. And the compound is above ground, surrounded by a camouflage holo shield." Phoenix replied. "It's a basic house, 4 bedroom, 3 baths. Its a bolt hole. I didn't want a big house to begin with but I chose it just in case." She looked at him. "My house in Colorado is home. For now. This is a temporary thing."

Mattias was surprised by the size and ingenuity of the place. "So, I guess, if I lost sight of you, without that fancy lens, I'd be lost in here forever." He made a scary sound when he finished speaking.

"Yes" she smiled. "But I won't leave you behind, Darling."

This made Mattias step a little quicker to keep up with Phoenix. "Seriously? I was only joking back there? I suppose there are booby traps and automated defences of some kind as well?"

"Biometrics. Keyed to my Genetics. You are safe as you are with me and I have not tripped the alarms."

"Good. So I'll just have to make sure I've got you in my arms if we ever need to go through here again." He winked at her, then smiled that ruggedly handsome smile he had, just for her.

With a soft laugh she led him further into the tunnels and soon enough they came to a very old fashioned looking trap door above them. She paused and then reached up and rapped on it 3 times.

There was a pause and another sound echoed through the tunnel. The trap slid open and a male Erisian crouched there. "Penelope"

"Kyian" He held out a hand and she took it and allowed him to pull her up into a small room.

Mattias helped Phoenix up as Kyian pulled. Then, once she was clear, he crouched down slightly, then leapt up, catching the edge with his fingers. Grunting, he started to pull himself up.

Kyian helped him as well as his sister stood up and waited.

Once Mattias was back on his feet, he offered his right hand to Kyian. 'Thank you, Sir. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."

"Kyian, this is Mattias."

The younger man studied him and frowned. "The Marine" He said. He looked at his sister. "Mother and Miran are upstairs. Twins are down for their nap."

She smiled. "And you?"

"I should be asleep as well." he groused. "But your signal came in just as I came off of watch"

Phoenix smiled and shook her head. "Now now grumpy."

Kyian gave her a brief hug and walked to the short flight of stairs. "Come on." he said.

Without a word, Mattias awkwardly lowered his unshaken hand. Hearing the tone in her brother's voice told Mattias that this was going to be a very long day. Silently, he fell into step behind the two of them.

Phoenix had noted it and she would deal with her brother later. She followed Kyian up the stairs, her hand behind her back to reach for Matt's.

Reaching forward, Mattias felt a warm smile cross his face as he took hold of Phoenix's awaiting hand. Giving it a gentle squeeze, he felt a bit of relief flood through his system.

They moved into the lower level of the house. Kyian led them into the kitchen and moved to stand beside a woman, Mattias had only seen at a distance. She stood beside the counter, a cup of tea in hand.

At the kitchen table, a teenager held an infant feeding them a bottle while the other slept.

The woman smiled. "Penelope."

"Mother" but Phoenix barely looked at her mother, her gaze drawn to the teen and the children.

Miran looked up and grinned. "Pene!"

Phoenix moved to hug her little sister and didn't let go of Mattias's hand so he was dragged after her.

Mattias kept back, out of respect to the reunion of Phoenix and her family.

Miran and Phoenix hugged tightly. It was clear the sisters, despite a massive age gap were close. Drawing back Phoenix studied Miran.

Miran smiled. "We are fine" she said.

Nodding, Phoenix looked towards Mattias and drew him over with a wave.

"Miran, this is Mattias."

The teenager smiled politely and held out her hand even as realization dawned on her face of who this man was. "Pleased to meet you Mattias"

Smiling politely, Mattias stepped forward and took Miran's hand and brought it to his lips, gently kissing her knuckles as he bowed slightly. "The pleasure is mine, Your Highness."

Miran grinned. Unlike Phoenix she was more confident in herself as a teenager. Phoenix had seen to that.

While Mattias was charming her sister, Phoenix had moved to pick up one of the twins and was holding the child close.

Kiana Lalor, the mother of Penelope, Kyian and Miran moved towards Mattias. "Lieutenant Richardson Correct?" She asked coolly, her federation standard a bit stilted.

Mattias saw Phoenix's mother approach. Releasing his hold on Miran's hand, he turned and dropped to his right knee, bowing his head in respect, as he once saw the castle guards do, as she walked by. "With respect, Your Majesty, my current rank and position is Starfleet Marine Captain, Ma'am."

Phoenix sniffed and said "Oh get up Mattias, she does not need that."

"My daughter is correct." Kiana said.

Phoenix was cuddling both twins and gently with Miran's help settled them back in their bassinettes.

"So... you are back" Miran said. "Are.. is everything sorted?"

"Yes. And I will be reinstated soon." Phoenix said. "Elysium will be home again."

Mattias rose slowly, blushing heavily, convinced that Phee's mother now thought he was an idiot.

"So, Marine Captain Richardson, Have you been helping my daughter with her recent missions?" Kiana asked.

The question putting Phoenix in his mind, Mattias's embarrassment quickly bled away. With a small smile of pride, he said proudly, "Yes, Ma'am. Yes, Ma'am, I did." His tone then turned more sincere. "I would do anything for your daughter, Ma'am."

Kiana raised an elegant eyebrow. But wisely chose not to comment further after Phoenix gave her a warning look.

Miran chose to speak then "It will be good to be back on Ely. Triston and I have unfinished business. "

"I bet" Phoenix replied with a grin.

She looked around the group. "We can return to Colorado today. "

Moving over to Phoenix's side, he took her hand into his, as his eyes seemed to be drawn to the two beautiful babies. "May I...see them, Phee?" He whispered, the pain that she knew he carried in his heart clearly evident on his face.

Not paying attention to her family now, she nodded and drew him closer to herself and the nearly 6 month old twins. She linked her arm through his as she and he stood next to the two bassinets.

For a few beats, he said nothing. He just admired the perfection before him. "Phee," he finally whispered. "They're perfect!" A tear slowly fell from his right eye. Seeing these babies, he knew they would never need fear the things that go bump in the night.

For he was the thing that those things feared more.

Phoenix leaned against him and smiled.

Her mother watched with a blank face. Kyian had narrowed his eyes. Miran had simply smiled and said to her mother and brother "Let's go pack" and was pushing them from the kitchen.

Mattias no longer even registered the others were in the room. He only saw Phoenix and the twins. "What are their names?" He whispered, careful not to wake them.

"Elizabeth Liselle and William Kenneth" She said softly. "We call them Lizzie and Liam."

"Lizzie and Liam," he almost hummed their names to himself. "Hi, guys!" He whispered, waving a tiny wave to both infants. "My name is Mattias, but you can call me whatever you want! I know I'm not your biological daddy, but I hope I can be your friend."

Liam was staring but waved his arms. Lizzie yawned.

"Oh yeah, scintillating conversationalists." Phoenix laughed softly.

"They're just right, for me." He gave Phoenix a side glance. "May I... hold them?"

Phoenix nodded. "Sure"

Smiling a genuinely happy smile, his eyes full of wonder as he reached down for Liam, aa he was closer. "Hey, you!" Mattias cooed.

Liam gurgled and gave a smile at the man who picked him up.

"Well, aren't you just a very handsome little man?" Mattias spoke in silly tones and made faces as he spoke to young Liam.

Phoenix watched him with her son and smiled. Lizzie had fallen asleep and upstairs she could hear people moving around packing. Leaving him to play with the twins she moved into the living room area and checked the scanners.

Mattias and Liam were in their own little world of conversation. "Yes...yes..yes..you are a handsome little man, yes you are." Mattias made burbling sounds as he continued to slowly dance around the room, Liam secure in his strong arms.

The family packed up fairly quickly and soon they had all regathered in the kitchen. Phoenix and Miran carried the twins in their strapped on baby carriers and Kyian had with his elder sisters help beamed all belongings into transporter chips.

Mattias looked around, then after taking Phoenix's right hand into his left, raised it up to kiss her knuckles. He then looked into her beautiful eyes and smiled happily. "Let's go home."

She smiled and they moved towards the exit they had come in via. The console chirped. Phoenix reacted almost instantly. She ran to the living room saying "Kyian, tunnel now. Take mum and Miran. Mother!" She was pulling Lizzie out of the Carrier as she raced.

Kiana followed and helped Phoenix take off the harness and strapped it on herself. Miran was already moving to the tunnel with Kyian.

Phoenix brought up the screen as her mother, Lizzie in her arms moved after them. "I have two ships. Non federation type. Erisian. From the Embassy I am guessing."

"You're brother?" Mattias asked, suddenly wishing he had his kit from the Black Watch. All he had on him, at present, was his ka-bar, in an inverted sling on his back, and his brass knuckles.

"Maybe." Came the response. "If we are in the tunnels then our bio-signs will be masked. No life signs, no reason to stick around."

"Then let's get in there!" Mattias quickly ushered Phoenix into the nearest tunnel.

Just as they reached the tunnel, Phoenix turned and said "Computer shut down all power" and then she let him help her into the tunnels.

Once he lowered Phoenix down into the tunnel below, Mattias started to drop down as well. As he went, he pulled the camouflaged panel back into place. Finally having to just drop down and let it fall into place.

Kyian, Kiana and Miran were waiting further down the tunnel with the twins. Kyian held a sword in his hand and was standing between his family and the tunnel itself. He, had been trained to fight, unlike Pallas who had gotten through military training without doing the work.

Phoenix nodded at Kyian who inclined his head and led the way.

"Go," Mattias whispered as he pushed Phoenix along. He had already drawn his ka-bar and donned his brass knuckles. "I'll pull up the rear!"

Phoenix made sure her mother and sister were between Kyian and herself and then followed.

The group made it to an exit of the tunnels but Kyian stopped and Phoenix moved to stand beside him. A short whispered conversation in their native tongue happened and Phoenix climbed to the top of the ladder and listened. Silence above. She frowned and waved the group back and climbed back down silently. "Too quiet" she breathed. "No animal noises."

"Are these tunnels comm shielded?" Mattias had pulled out an emergency beacon and was prepared to activate it. "New design. Can't be blocked by any known jammer. The Diplomatic Protective Detail gets them special. I can't make an actual message, it just flashes out across all bandwidths. My guys know to listen for it."

"They are everything shielded." Phoenix replied. "Kyian. Lake exit."

Her brother nodded and took Miran's hand as he set off. Kiana followed. Phoenix touched Mattias cheek. "Its further from the shuttle but safer."

Pocketing the beacon, he nodded. This was Phoenix's land, he would give any support he could, he would die to protect this family.

They made it to the new exit 20 minutes later and this time, Kyian listened at the top and slipped from the exit to look around. He gave the all clear and Phoenix followed him out, then after a moment, she signalled for Miran and Kiana and Mattias to join them.

They were behind rock fall.

Mattias kept his eyes and ears open. "You all should stay here, undercover. I'll circle around the long way and get our shuttle."

Phoenix looked at him. "Are you sure?" she asked softly.

Nodding, Mattias replied softly. "This is what I do, sweetheart." He reached out and pulled her to him, kissing her deeply.

Phoenix kissed him back and smiled.

"I'll be right back. I expect you and everyone to be in one piece when I get back."

Phoenix nodded. "We will be." she promised.

Without another word, He turned away and melted into the nearby treeline. In seconds, it was as if he didn't even exist.

Within a mile, he came upon the first enemy troop. Normally, he wouldn't do anything against a visiting alien to the planet of his people. However, when said alien is dressed in full battle rattle, and he is hunting the woman he loves, all bets were off. Now, it was time to get to work.

Like a silent wraith, he moved up behind the trooper. In a few silent seconds, he had reached up from behind and after covering his target's mouth, he jerked the man's head back and then slit his throat.

After dragging the dead trooper into the bushes, he took the weapons and now felt a bit more prepared. Reaching up, he tapped his comm badge. "Reaper to Hell Spawn, do you read?"

The voice of Mattias's friend and MXO came over. "Hell Spawn reads five by five, Reaper. Sit rep?"

"Unknown number of tangos hunting both myself and six special friendlies. Request immediate drop to my location, over."

"Understood Reaper, stand by.....location locked, dropping in five mikes. How copy, over?"

"Roger that. Bring the pain. Out." He then double tapped his commbadge, ending the call. He continued scanning the area, as he moved towards the area that they had left the shuttle.

===back at the rocks===

Phoenix and Kyian kept watch while Miran and Kiana entertained the twins at the back of the small cave.

"So" Kyian said "He is the one who pulled you off the post. When father.."

"yes."

"And you and He?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"When I was 20 and then more recently."

Kyian fell silent.

===in the woods===

Mattias finally reached a clearing, when he stopped and dropped to his knees. Out ahead of him, were a pair of Erisian shuttles, both on the ground, with their rear ramps dropped open. In the centre of the area, Pallas stood, yelling at his soldiers. Apparently they weren't having any luck finding their targets.

A soft cooing to his right signalled Mattias that help had finally arrived. Backing up slowly, he finally came face to face with a forest demon. First Lieutenant Christopher Leonards, his MXO, dressed and cameoed fully to blend in with the forest.

After describing the situation to his friend, Mattias ordered his men to surround and incapacitate the Erisians. They were to do so quietly and non-lethally, if possible. If not...then lethal force was authorized. However, the take downs had to be quiet. And the other thing...Pallas was his.

Pallas was enraged. He was certain this time, he would find those he sought. And when he did, his twin and younger brother would die! And those stupid bastards would die here rather than have the honour of a swordsman on Erisia. His mother, well his father would deal with her. And Miran would be married off so she would not cause trouble. He ranted at his men to find them. They could not be far after all!

Slowly, the Erisians along the outer perimeter started to vanish, as each member of Mattias's special ops unit subdued their respective targets.

Alexandre Lath, Tazys, was not one to countermand the orders given but his true allegiance was not to Pallas, but to his sisters closest friend, Penelope. His own men drew back to protect the King and where possible, they obeyed Alexandre rather than Pallas.

Suddenly, an ear piercing whistle was heard from behind Pallas, by the shuttles. Mattias stood. Out in the open, looking very much like the gun slinging warrior that he was. His face looked calm, while his eyes were full of a dangerous energy as he stared directly at Pallas.

Pallas stared and snapped "Lath! Get him!"

Alexandre rolled his eyes and sighed. "Aye" He drew his phaser rifle and slowly advanced.

Behind Pallas a solider stood up and fired a stun blast taking the King down.

Alexandre grinned and stopped. He saluted Mattias with the rifle and barked out recall orders as two soldiers half carried, half dragged the King away.

"You got that all taken care of then?" Mattias asked, cautious of this turn of events.

Alexandre nodded "Tell Penelope she owes me" He said with a grin. "We will blame her for it of course, she should know that she stunned him from behind." Now Alexandre's grin grew vicious. "And as he ordered me away from my guard post, he will be in a lot of trouble with the High Lord." So saying, Alexandre headed back to the ships. "HE wont be back for a while is my guess!" he called over his shoulder to Mattias.

"And what of your dead and wounded here?" Mattias called out, thinking of the trooper he had killed and the soldiers his men had taken down

"Oh, my men are collecting them as long as you let them."

"So long as you and your men are not aggressive to me and mine, you will have nothing to worry from us."

Alexandre nodded "Good luck." He called out as several men headed to collect the dead and wounded.

A few minutes later, after the last of the troopers had been loaded up, Mattias stepped over to the head guard. "I hope that the next time we meet, it will be under friendlier circumstances."

"Sure will. Where do you think Penelope gets her Erisian supplies?" Alexandre replied.

Mattias chuckled. "Then I'll bid you safe journey home. Do you have a message for Phoenix?"

"Nah, just tell her Alex says she owes him." With that Alexandre went into the ship.

Mattias nodded, then moved away from the shuttle as it lifted off and they both flew away. He then turned his attention to his men. "Thank you all. A job very well done. Now, get back, before your missed."

After the team beamed away, Mattias hustled to the next clearing. There, he found their shuttle, unmolested. After powering it up, he lifted off and flew the short distance to the cave, landing as close as he could. As he exited the craft, he gave a whistle that sounded like his knock from the Black Watch.

Phoenix came out cautiously. When she spotted him she beamed a smile and waved.

Mattias smiled back, giving her the all clear signal. He then started towards her. He had to hold her in his arms.

Phoenix waved back into the cave and slowly headed down to him, taking her time not to fall and then turning to help her sister down. Kyian helped Kiana.

Once the four were on solid ground, Phoenix briskly moved to greet him.

Once she was close enough, Mattias wrapped her in a tight embrace, lifting her off of her feet as he did so. "Are you all alright?" He whispered into her ear.

"Yes, we are all fine." She whispered back and wrapped her arms around him as she hugged him back.

"It's over, my love," Mattias kept his hold on Phoenix, though putting her feet back on the ground. "You are safe, the twins are safe, everyone is safe. Your brother has been dealt with. Alex says that you owe him one."

She smiled at that. "I'll make sure he gets payment."

Relaxing his hold slightly, Mattias gave Phoenix a deep kiss, not caring who was around. He was still coming down from his combat high, especially after having killed that trooper. He needed this...to feel human again.

Knowing him as she did, Phoenix kissed him back and after a moment broke it. "Let's go home. " she whispered. "Once everyone is settled..." she said in his ear.

Mattias replied with a soft growl, quiet enough that only Phoenix heard. Finally, he released her and then after offering his hand to Kiana. "Ma'am, it would be my honour to help you to your seat."

Kiana, Lizzie asleep in the Carrier nodded and let him help her to the shuttle.

Miran and Kyian fell into step with Phoenix and followed.

Once everyone was seated and secured, Mattias lowered his bulk into the pilot's seat. Firing up the engines, he looked over to Phoenix and smiled. "Coordinates?"

"Colorado house." Phoenix said. "Not reinstated fully yet."

Nodding, Mattias input the flight plan to ground control. He then activated the shuttle's thrusters and lifted off without a single vibration. He banked the craft starboard and rose up into the air. Twenty minutes later, they were on final approach to the large estate that was owned by Phoenix, using the estate's ground computer to guide him in.

A few minutes later, they were landed and Mattias helped Kiana out again. Then he waited for Phoenix.

Kyian and Miran moved towards the house, Kiana followed. The twins were asleep so they would put them to bed.

Phoenix exited the shuttle and linked her arm with his. "Come, let me show you around." Well, the way to her suite was more like it, she thought as they followed the others. "Mother and Miran have things in hand."

Once everyone was inside, Phoenix locked down the estate.

In her private suite, Mattias admired the furs on the large, four poster bed. Phoenix had told him to get comfortable while she checked something.

Taking off his uniform jacket, he laid it on the large sofa that faced an enormous fireplace. Next, he removed the harness that he wore for his ka-bar. He then moved over to the fully stocked side bar and started to make himself a drink.

Ten minutes later, Phoenix entered and sighed. "Twins are down for the next few hours." She said. "Everyone else is going to sleep for a bit. The holo-nanny is active." She took off her jacket and kicked off her boots. "Do I get a drink?" She asked with a teasing smile.

"Of course, my love." He then made one of her favourites. When he was done, he carried both drinks to where she was standing. "There you go." He raised his glass. "To family."

She smiled repeated his toast, sipped and then kissed him gently. "Thank you love," she said softly. Then, smiling more, she took his hand and led him to the couch.

Mattias made a soft sound when Phoenix kissed him then, he followed her to the sofa, sitting down when they reached it.

Sitting beside him she sipped her drink and leaned into him. "What a day," she whispered.

Raising his right arm up and putting it behind Phoenix, Mattias held her to him, finally feeling content in the world. "You can say that again, your highness." He gave her a soft grin as he spoke. "I like your decorating style, by the way."

She smiled. "I am still Erisian at heart. I like my Erisian ben linens at times, silk is the best thing to sleep on." Putting her now empty drink down she stood and began to undress. "Or to give you what you need after today."

Downing the rest of his drink, Mattias put his glass down as well. He then sat back and enjoyed the show. A hungry smile plastered to his face as he watched the woman he loved enjoy herself by getting him so very horny. He reached out for her as she moved her body. "I'm assuming the room is soundproofed?"
