Mission:
Darkness Rising - A Phoenix Lalor Sub Plot
Location: Base, Kate's Lab
Timeline: MD - 23 1500Hrs.
1102 words - 2.2 OF Standard Post Measure
Kate Finished with a vial of light blue liquid. In theory, this would. Given a lifespan of ten seconds... destroy the Nanites in her body by coroding its power cells. Ten seconds... She held up the vial and plugged it into a hypospay. Leaving for the medical bay. She checked the vial out... In ten seconds, it would render the nanites inert, but a lot could happen in ten seconds. If the serum was too quick to raise the blood stream's PH so that it dissolved the nanite's power cells. It would possibly activate their anti-tampering systems.
Kate tapped a combadge. "Kara... Lily, Malakai... Mattias. I need you in sickbay."
Malakai was in the cargo bay looking at the collection of 'stuff' they had transported from Cragen's base but replied instantly, "On my way." Wondering what Kate wanted to see them all about. Whatever it was it sounded serious.
Mattias was up in the shuttlebay, working on the shuttle he and Phoenix had acquired from Heldora. When the call came in, he reached over and hit the comm button for intraship. "On my way down." He then hurried out of the shuttle and down to the main deck where the med bay was located.
Kara was in hers and Malakai’s quarters taking advantage of some downtime to rest, her pregnancy was taking a lot out of her, and any chance to rest was a blessing. Hearing the call she gave her hair a quick brush and tidy then headed to Sickbay.
Kate held up the blue vial as they walked up. "I had some inspiration last night... I'm going to raise my blood stream's pH in order to corrode the nanites power source. This serum is the prototype."
Malakai raised an eyebrow. "And that will do what to you Kate? Other than getting rid of the nanites?"
Mattias was equally concerned, but waited to hear all of the plan before putting his two cents in.
“What have you been creating?” Kara looked at Kate as she stood alongside Malakai. “What does that do?”
"Essentially, it's like cooking a frog. if you drop it into a pot and immediately turn up the head... it jumps out... But if you gradually turn up the head... It stays in the pot until its boiled to death. That's what I intend to do with these nanites. I've come up with this. It will make my blood gradually become acidic enough to carrode the nanites power source." Kate noted. "It will lower my blood's pH levels to six, but it cannot stay there. And there's two serums one to lower the pH to dissolve the nanites power sources... the second to restore it. I can only stay in this state for ten seconds. But ten seconds is enough time."
"And you've run tests on this right?" Malakai asked knowing she hadn't.
"Simulated, it was far more promising than my last idea, and it is my last idea, Malakai. I project an Eighty percent survival rate." Kate noted. "Which is the best im going to accomplish given this equipment. The good news is after the nanites are disabled, Kara can extract them." Kate layed down on the biobed.
Mattias moved up and placed his right hand on her left shin. "What do you need us to do? Hold you down?"
"I need you guys to be here with me. Did you know my people do get scared?" Kate noted. "I need courage at times too."
"Say no more Kate. We're all here to help and support you." Malakai replied. "We'll even hold you down if you need that." He joked.
Moving up to stand on her left side, Mattias lifted Kate's laft hand, and held it with his left hand, in a friendly gesture. "We will always be here to help you. We're family now. It's what family does."
“Are you sure this compound isn’t going to cook your insides as well as the nanites?” Kara looked at Kate. “What do I do if something goes wrong? Is there a compound to reverse the effects?”
"The second compound will restore my body's pH. But we need to do this. Otherwise, I'm dead when Cragen realizes who I am. Worse, he could use them to enslave me again." Kate noted. "Lily, we need to do it, I won't be her again."
Lily had arrived after the others and now stood, shoulder braced on the door frame listening in silence. When Kate turned to her, she studied her carefully. She weighed the options and frowned. "Kara, what do you think?" She asked the medic's opinion.
Kara looked at Lily. “If it works the way Kate plans it’ll be worth the risk, but it is a risk.” She looked at Kate. “This is a risk we have to take.”
"ok..." Lily said. "But lets be honest here, I want all safety procedures put in place before you start"
Kate spoke. "Make your preparations, and let's do it Kara."
Kara nodded and looked at Kate. “I’m ready when you are, I just need to make sure everything is ready incase of any side effects.”
"Do it." Kate noted
Kara nodded and introduced the serum to Kate’s body. Now all she could do was hope everything went as planned.
A Console began to show the concentrations on nanites inside Kate's heart. After two seconds the concentrations began to decrease as the nanites began to shut down
“It’s working!” Kara looked at the others. “Levels are decreasing, and the nanites are shutting down.”
Kate nodded as she watched the scanner. "Kara, you should be able to remove the dormant nanites now. Give me the pH stabilizer now. I can't have my blood this acidic. And with a sample of the nanites, I should be able to refine this treatment for Josie."
Kara nodded. “pH stabiliser going in, dormant nanites being removed... now.” She smiled excitedly at the success of the procedure.
Kate breathed a sigh of relief... "I'm free of him finally." She noted... "Now we know what to do with the rest of Cragen's slaves."
“What about those already sold?” Kara looked concernedly at Kate. “We can’t help them.”
Kate spoke. "If there's any records... If we can find them.." She noted. "No matter where in the galaxy they've been taken... I'll search everything we've siezed from Cragen's study to find those he's sold slaves to. Every scrap of intelligence I can gleen from his computers." She noted. "I swear to Tirielle herself." Kate mentioned. "I'll find people, resources, whatever I can find to do this."
