Promotion

Once things had settled down, Phoenix returned to the USS Elysium in orbit at SB 1 and headed to Marine County. She could have called the officers to her ready room but felt this would work better.

She entered, in silence, not wanting to draw attention to herself and walked to the colonel's office. She rapped lightly on the door.

Studying a PaDD from behind her desk, Naxea looked up to see the captain standing at the entrance to her office. Naxea couldn't recall the last time the Captain had visited Marine Country as she stood. "Captain, come in. What can I do for you?"

Phoenix smiled. "It has come to my attention that one of your Marines is eligible for promotion.. and a change from Enlisted to officer."

Naxea nodded. "Yes, ma'am. Corporal Tonelly has completed the required OCS courses to receive his commission."

Phoenix placed a box on the table. She opened it. "This rank?" she asked showing the pips.

Naxea picked up the box and opened it. Inside were the bars of a Starfleet Marine Captain, causing her to raise an eyebrow in return. She had expected First Lieutenant, but a promotion to captain was rare. However, she felt that Tonelly had earned it with his years--no centuries of experience. "Seems appropriate. I'll call him up for his promotion." She tapped her commbadge. "Colonel Azhul to Corporal Tonelly. I need to see you in my office."

Phoenix leaned against the wall and waited.

***The Thunder Dome***

David was busy going through his workout regimine. Currently, he was running the track. He had just finished mile ten of twelve when he heard the announcement to go see the Colonel. Making a beeline for his towel, he tapped his commbadge. "On my way, Ma'am!" He then hustled out of the compartment and was standing outside of the MCO's office less than forty seconds later. Reaching up, he pressed the door chime and waited.

Phoenix, standing by the wall, glanced at Naxea and waved her hand down the door release to admit the Corporal.

After the doors hissed open, David marched in, stopping three paces in front of and centered on Naxea's desk. After snapping to attention and saluting, he spoke. "Corporal Tonelly reporting as ordered, Ma'am!" He had, of course, noticed the other woman in the room, but had never officially met Captain Lalor, so he kept his focus on his immediate superior officer.

Naxea returned the salute. "Corporal Tonelly, Captain Lalor here has informed me that Marine HQ has approved of your field Officer training and have issued a field commission," she grinned as she picked up the box containing the Marine Captain Bars and walked around her desk to stand in front of him. "You are hereby promoted to the rank of Captain in the Starfleet Marine Corps, as well as approved for the position of XO of the Sixty-Second Marine Detachment. Congratulations, Captain," she offered her hand to him, smiling.

David was shocked at what he just heard. While he was overjoyed to hear that he had passed his OCS training, he was gob smacked to hear that he was also bumped up two additional ranks right at the start. Taking Naxea's offered hand, he grinned at her. Quickly recovering his voice, he replied. "Th-(cough)-thank you, Ma'am! I...I hadn't expected either the higher rank or the position! I am very honored, Colonel!"

"Don't thank me," Naxea grinned as she opened the box. "It was Captain Lalor's and Marine HQ's doing. Apparently, your experience rates a promotion to Captain upon being commissioned. She removed his Corporal Rank and pinned the new Captain bars onto his uniform collar. "Computer, transfer Marine Detachment XO Clearance to Captain Tonelly effective immediately."

"Clearance access transferred," came the computer's feminine reply.

David stood a bit straighter while Naxea changed his rank insignia over. "Well, thank you, both of you Ladies. You have my word, I won't let either of you, the Corps or the Elysium down."

"We know that very well Captain." Phoenix said with a smile. "I am glad that the colonel how has a stable XO, it will only do your department good."

"Yes, Ma'am!" David replied eagerly. He was trying not to smile too much, but was failing miserably. "Colonel, with permission, may I use the rest of the day to go through all my movement and quartermaster changes, then go inform Baeryn of the great news? I will start first thing tomorrow in my new role." He paused before adding, "Unless, of course, you have a mission for me to complete first, Ma'am?"

Naxea couldn't help but grin at Tonelly with his enthusiasm. "Sure, take care of business, Captain Tonelly. You're dismissed."

Phoenix merely grinned as Naxea and Tonelly interreacted. It was a workable pairing.

"Thank you, Ma'am!" David replied enthusiastically. He snapped to attention again and saluted her. "I look forward to working together in this new relationship, Colonel."

"As do I, Captain," Naxea replied.
