[ON: Repel Boarders!]

USS ELYSIUM IN HOSTILE SPACE

The D'deridex-class, alternately known as the B-type warbird, opened a rain of fire from her phasers and the Elysium was broadsided. Explosions erupted as the phasers tore into the starboard side of the Federation ship. Buckling waves of photonic energy, like a hot knife through butter, cut along the midships and gouged a severe damaging blow to the ship. Her starboard nacelle exploded and the blue colored, energized plasma exploded in a terrifically damaging way. The engine smoked and then died. Sparks along her hull and dozens of bodies floating in the deep of space littered the battle area. The Romulans were careful not to damage the airlocks and boarding gangways. With tractor beams, the Romulan warbird latched onto the Federation starship and reeled her in. Then, maglock clamps fastened to the hull and a universal docking ring extended from the warbird to the Elysium. It closed, locked and Romulan shock troopers stormed into the boarding ramp. Attaching a ringed phaser emitter that was as large as the rounded airlock door, they cut through the door – not unlocking it – cutting through it until the door fell off the hinges and glowing red hot. They fired mercilessly into the gaping hole and stormed into the Elysium in waves.

DECK TWENTY-NINE – OUTSIDE MAIN ENGINEERING

The First Platoon had been divided into four fire teams. Two were on deck twenty-nine to protect Main Engineering from the oncoming Romulan hoard. Captain Woolheater, along with marines from the first and third platoons took up defensive positions. As they did so, the computer’s voice gave everyone pause.

=A= (beep-beep!) Warning! Explosive decompression deck ten. Deck eleven. Warning! Security forcefields have failed on deck fifteen, deck seventeen. Deck Twenty, deck twenty-one, deck twenty-two. Intruder alert! Deck seven, deck eleven, deck ten. Intruder alert! Deck twenty, deck twenty-two, deck twenty-four. Deck twenty-five. Emergency bulkheads in-place. Security seals have failed…=A=

As the computer listed off the grim details, Samuel got on the balls of his feet and with rifle in hand said in a loud voice, “MARINES! ON THE LINE! FORM UP – ON POINT. REPEL BOARDERS!” He stoked the troops with a loud voice and a crazy look in his eye, “ROMULANS JUST PICKED THE WRONG SHIP TO FUCK WITH! MARINES! YOU ARE THE FIRST AND THIRD PLATOONS. WE’RE GOING TO SEND THESE ROMULAN BASTARDS PACKING AND THE PRAETOR PAYS THE BILL!”

“ERRRRRR!!!!” was the rumbled reply. Sam patted the shoulders, slapped a few faces and rapped a few heads as he checked the marines out and then as the outer hatch was breached, he took his spot behind some defilade. He said to another marine near him, “I really hate these Romulans! They are gonna have to fight and bleed for every damn inch.” The door exploded inward and sent sparks and debris everywhere! Sam’s voice was above the din. “FIRE!” Phaser fire erupted from both sides. Romulan shock troopers came pouring through and they fell. Like harvest wheat with a scythe, they fell under the phaser ire of the Elysium Marines. They kept coming and eventually, it turned into hand to hand. It was brutal. Vicious and nasty fighting. Sam yelled back at the reserve line to make sure no Romulans made it past the breach point. “HOLD…THE…LINE!” He yelled back as he engaged in hand-to-hand combat. More Romulans poured through the breach. One marine pulled a photon grenade off his waist and activated it. Sam saw what he did and said, “NOO!” He saw the photon grenade arc through the air and land inside the boarding area airlock. The explosion took out the gangway and a lot of Romulans too. But it also exposed the entire deck to the void of space and everyone and everything that didn’t find something to hang on to was sucked out. Samuel tapped his COMM badge.

=A= Computer! End! Program! =A=

HOLODECK

The entire scene vanished. The air pressure was restored. Marines in mid-air crashed to the floor and the familiar gridlines appeared and gravity returned to normal. Sam and everyone landed with a thud.

Sam was displeased. He cracked his neck, had a look on his face and got to his feet, “GOD DAMMIT! FOSTER! YOU PIECE OF SHIT! WE’RE ALL DEAD!”

Sam got right up in the Lance Corporal’s face, “You lobbed a fuckin’ grenade into the god damned airlock! What were you thinking?” He was inches from the man’s face.

“I’m sorry! I forgot the door was cut open!” he said as he stood his ground.

“Sorry! Fuck Sorry! Sorry doesn’t save our asses when we’re floating home!” Sam clenched his jaw and his hands, but he calmed, “We need to plug that fuckin’ hole but we can’t blow it up. Now you know why? Does anybody not understand that we can’t let anybody gain access to Engineering? Maybe they’ll beam aboard? Maybe they cut right through the hull. Maybe…. they’ll arrive by delivering pizza!” He was frustrated, Sam took a breath. He said more calmly, "Romulans...won't have pity. Or remorse. I've seen what they are capable of. We don't do our job and people, our crewmates, our families, those we love and care about will suffer. Maybe even die. And I know that none of you want that to happen. This is our job. You want something done; you call the marines right? Let's do it again."

They were tired. They had been practicing boarding offenses and repelling defenses all night – this was the gamma shift. Sam could see it on their faces, “Marines! We go again. Computer will reset and randomize the simulation. Remember, you never know where or when. None of us want to end up in a Romulan prison camp. And they sure as hell ain’t taking our ship. Now. We go again. Let’s do our job! Make the Colonel proud and keep our ship mates alive.”

Sam addressed the computer, “Computer? Reset repel boarders simulation. Random setting, re-initialize battle scenario and reset score and time indexes to zero. Begin!” The computer reset and a new scenario was presented.

DECK TEN – PROMENADE

Suddenly, groups of fire teams of Romulan shock troopers started to materialize by beaming in on a Romulan transport wave. Sam pulled his rifle up and said, “MARINES! ON ME! ROMULAN INTRUDERS!”

And a new firefight began.

=== LATER THAT MORNING ===

Sam got off shift at 0800 from the Gamma shift. First thing he did after showering and changing into a fresh uniform was to go to Andrinn’s quarters. He arrived at the door at 0820 hours and he hesitated. Looked around, got nervous, thought about leaving and then pressed the door chime. He couldn’t wait to see him again.

Andrinn was in his quarters and was finishing putting on his uniform. He was running behind, but had one of the Vice-Consuls working in all the diplomatic problems that Andrinn was sure that would be coming down the line.

However, he heard his door chime ring and Andrinn yelled over his shoulder, "Come in!" Andrinn was hoping that it wasn't the Captain or Commodore coming to rip him a new one because he was a little bit late at getting up to Diplomatic Offices. Andrinn waited to see who would come in through the door and when the doors finally parted, allowing him to see Sam in the doorway, all Andrinn could do was smile.

"Hey, what are you doing down here? Aren't you supposed to be on some sort of duty shift or something?" Andrinn said teasingly, trying to help stafe off the nerves that were wrecking havoc on his stomach.

Sam stood there a moment and just smiled and then he stepped inside and the doors closed. He was grinning from ear to ear and he couldn't stop. "I was just...I was..." He put one arm on his hip and one arm to massage the bridge of his nose. He as having "feelings" again. But this time he said, "I couldn't wait to see you again man. You've been on my mind all night. Pleasantly so. I just want to see you again." He was blushing and he felt embarrassed, like he was screwing this up and being a dumbass. He stayed with it though, and he asked, awkwardly, but from affection. "How...how...how did you sleep?" And inside he rolled his eyes at how stupid it sounded. He felt like he couldn't move. He shifted his weight to his other foot just to prove to himself that he could. He looked at Andrinn and looked away and then looked back again. "Dammit...you'd think this would get easier over time!" He shook his head and said, "I...just want to be close to you. I...feel better. When I'm close to you."

Andrinn closed the space between them and slipped his hand under Sam's uniform and rubbed his fingers along his side. "I missed you too. It was fun going on that hike recently. I....hope that you enjoyed yourself...too..." Andrinn replied, his voice starting to trail off. He was lost in his own thoughts and emotions. He hadn't been with anyone for several months now, ever since his ex-finance broke it off via subspace communication after Andrinn found all of his exes stuff moved out of their shared apartment. However, this time felt different. It was special in its own way and it was amazing. Andrinn found a lot of comfort in Sam and his almost lighthearted view of the universe. He was thought it was...refreshing.

Sam smiled at Andrinn. He was so touch starved that even this light caress through the fabric of his undershirt was enough to lower his blood pressure and calm him. He was very happy and returned the touch with a generous hug. "I missed you."

"How'd you sleep last night mister? Did you sleep well?" Andrinn asked, taking a few steps back and his hands off of Sam's sides. He wanted to get the full view of Sam and those beautiful eyes and smile.

Sam reached for Andrinn's hand and caught it up in his. With a little schoolboy grin he took a step forward not wanting the closeness to end just yet. "Jus'...thinking of you. I was working, doing some drills. Thinking about you. Wondering if you're OK. Missing you. I hate it that we're on different shifts." Then he realized Andrinn was getting ready to go to work, "Oh, I'm not delaying you right? Are you on your way to work?"

"Doesn't mean that we can't get something in-between the two shifts. We do have Beta Shift onboard the Elysium..." Andrinn said, lacing his fingers between Sam's, allowing the two men to hold hands. Replying to the question, Andrinn started leading Sam out of his quarters and replied back, "Well, I was already late to my duty shift, so I had one of the Vice-Consuls do the morning meetings and catch up on anything that wasn't finished from Gamma Shift. I'm on my way down, so if you're not busy, wanna walk me up to the Diplomatic Corps offices onboard?"

Sam pulled Andrinn closer, before they reached the doors to his quarters and said, "Sure, yeah I'll go." Then he said, "First, you need to be hugged and kissed. Can't believe that you'd walk out that door with no hug and no kiss. What's next? No shirt? No pants?" he smiled playfully as he teased him.

"Could you imagine if I walked into a Diplomatic meeting with the Klingons without pants on? They'd think that I was a totally nuts diplomat and needed to be sent all the way back to Trill!" Andrinn replied, thinking of all the possibilities that could happen if he didn't wear his full uniform, letting out a small chuckle before looking over at Sam for a moment.

Woolheater got a devious grin and said, "Oh hell's yes I can imagine that!"
Sam's fingers momentarily released from Andrinn's so he could bring both hands to hold Andy's face. Then, he kissed him, lovingly and deeply. Then, spending a moment in his eyes, he touched his nose to his and then wrapped Andrinn in a warm hug. The kind that is like a warm blanket on a cold, rainy Saturday morning. The kind that warms you all the way down to your soul and lets you know that you are loved.

The two men hugged for a moment, which felt like an eternity. This was something Andrinn missed and loved, as it sent shivers up and down his spine. He loved having someone...anyone to talk to and just have in his life, even if it was just to be feel loved.

Sam, after a moment in that hug released Andrinn and said, "There. Now you can go to work. Do whatever it is that you do." His hand found Andrinn's and he kissed it and smiled broadly. Happy as a clam, joyously happy inside. And his fingers interlaced and they walked out into the corridor.

The two men walked to the nearest turbolift and the doors instantly opened for them. It was nice being on a starship and being a senior officer because Turbolifts instantly appeared for him. As the doors closed behind them, Andrinn ordered the lift to take them to Deck Two, which is where the Diplomatic Offices were. As the lift began climbing the levels, Andrinn looked over at Sam and asked, "So, did you have a good shift?"

He looked back at him and said, "Yup. Colonel wants to practice boarding and repelling procedures, tactics. Today was rough. I had to put on my bulldog face and get all up in their faces. We'll get there. They're getting used to me and I'm getting used to them. Teamwork. It's coming together. I'll go to the gym, do my workout, grab a protein shake and get some racktime. Do you want to meet for dinner maybe?" He asked and ran his finger on the right side of Andrinn's collar to smooth it out and make it sharp. Sam smiled and said, "Somebody forgot to shave today?" and he rubbed a finger or too against Andrinn's chin.

Running the forefinger of his free hand, Andrinn ran it along Sam's chin and said, "Coming from someone with just about the same about of stubble along his own chin, you're one to talk!" Andrinn let out a small chuckle and thought about dinner.

"Yeah, you wanna meet me Paddy's Irish Restaurant down on Deck 10? I've heard it was good and I want to see if actually tastes like true Irish food. Maybe, you can tell me more about those holodeck characters that you had to go off to fight!" Andrinn said, poking Sam in the stomach before the doors of the turbolift opened up and deposited the two men onto Deck 2.

Andrinn walked onto the deck with Sam tagging along and Andrinn stopped for a moment. "Hey, I hope that you go get a nice nap today and I just want to say that I hope you have....a nice day...." Andrinn said, blushing slightly, hoping to hide it away from Sam.

"Anywhere you want. Just as long as its with you" Sam answered. When Andrinn stopped he seemed to hide away. Sam reached out and lifted his head up by the chin. Sam said nothing at first, just gave him that approving smile, his blue eyes alive and happy. He said, "I'm glad you're here. I'm glad you're a part of my life. I will have a good nap. And I will see you later." He drew him into a hug, his hands went down to Andrinn's ass and Sam squeezed it. Looking at him he said, "I hope your day is as nice as your ass" and then he kissed him and released him. Sort of. He held onto his hand and stepped back one step, "Can't let you go dude. You're under my skin you sexy thang!"

Andrinn smiled and kissed Sam back, just as passionately as Sam had before. "You're under my skin, too. You're a sexy beast. Now, go back to your quarters and get some sleep before I have to carry you back down there and tuck you in, right in front of all the other marines down there!" Andrinn said with a smile before slapping Sam's ass. He turned around and looked back at Sam and gave him a little wave before heading back to walk into the Diplomatic Offices.

Sam watched him walk into the Diplomatic Offices, he leaned against the bulkhead and waved back to him. He would workout, get a shower, get some rack time and then meet up for Irish food later today. Life was good.
