Sally Johnson was a 23 year old ensign in Engineering who had married her high school sweetheart Ensign Kly Johnson, also an engineer.

They had both been working on the Elysium and had been expecting their first child. She was 8 months pregnant when the accident occured. Kly died in the initial incident and Sally was badly wounded. So badly that the medic who discovered her in a hallway was concerned for the life of Sally and her unborn child.

Harper O'Leary had been trying to find her way from her cabin to the Emergency shelters when she had come on the medic and Sally.

Sally's right arm was pinned beneath torn metal and her breathing was laboured.

"Sally!" Harper knew her from her visits to Harper’s store. The redhead threw herself down beside the injured ensign and looked at the medic. "What can I do?" She asked willing to help.

"S-Save my baby" Sally gasped out.

The medic shot a panicked look at Harper. "She is too badly injured to have the baby.." he protested. "It will kill her if I do a C-section."

Harper turned to Sally, fully intending on urging the younger woman to hold on until they could get her to medical. But Sally shook her head. "Kly is dead. Please save my baby, I don't want her to die with me."

Harper’s eyes watered.

The medic was still shaking his head.

"Do it" Harper said softly to the medic. "She knows" she added as she took Sally's free hand.

Sally's breathing was laboured but she managed to gasp out "Sing Harper."

Both women were of Irish extraction and Harper knew which song to sing. Softly she began to sing.

"Over in Killarney,many years ago
My mother sang a song to me
In tones so sweet and low
Just a simple little ditty
in her good old Irish way
And I'd give the world if she could sing
that song to me this day"

As Harper sang the Medic cut Sally's shirt back and using the laser scalpel he made the incision to free the baby from her dying mother.

"Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry!
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby."

Sally was struggling to breath as the medic finished the cutting and slowly lifted the babe from her mother's womb.

"Oft in dreams I wander
to that cot again.
I feel her arms a-hugging me
As when she held me then.
And I hear her voice a-hummin'
to me as in the days of yore,
when she used to rock me fast asleep
outside the cabin door."

"A Girl" he announced as he laid the babe on her mother's Chest so she could feel her mother.

Harper bent down to ask the child's name.

Sally's voice rattled in her throat "Niamh" she said as she took her last breaths. "She is yours Harper"

"Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry!
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby."

As Harper finished the song, the medic wrapped the baby in the remains of Sally's uniform jacket and held her out to Harper. "Parents last wish." He said sadly. He then laid a cloth across Sally's face.

Harper held the child close. Tears were running down her cheeks and she nodded. She cradled the child close and with the medic they headed for the emergency shelter.

A very moving and tragic work here. So skillfully written and tender. Thank you for the effort and the tragedy. I like the effect of the lullaby against this tragedy. Very effective. Thank you.

A moving, gut-wrenching post that shows a mother's supreme sacrifice to save her unborn daughter. A wonderfully written post by Jill that catches the emotional turmoil and tension of the dying ensign as well as Harper. Very well done. A post she can be proud of.
