BACK ON THE SURFACE
The Brecourt were growing impatient. Sam and Charlie were talking in low whispers. They got both of them slapped and Sam a roundhouse kick to the chest. He was dragged back into the COMM signal and the Brecourt again called on an open frequency so that all marine and starfleet forces could hear,
=A= I'm not a patient man. I want your answer now! Surrender when you land. Do you comply? =A=
The larger Brecourt, from the back said, "Kill one of these. I don't care which."
In the background, everyone could hear weapons fire. Good guys or more bad guys, Sam did not know.
Man'darr and Gami rushed up the stairs with their CQB Pulse rifles at the ready.
From almost two kilometers away, David had found a perfect sniping perch. After quickly activating his suit's camo, he peered through his scope, quickly finding Sam as he was kicked in the chest. He cursed under his breath. Hammer, Banshee...Rip Van Winkle in position. I see two friendlies and three tangos. Tangos are not being polite. Baby Bear was just kicked in his chest. Move your asses! Things are about to go south. I'm locked in on the shithead on your left when you breach. Signal when ready to breach.
Charlie, sensing something bad was about to happen looked at Samuel and said, "Give these fuckers hell brother." Sam said, "Count on it." The larger Brecourt, the one in command stepped from the shadows, put the barrel of his weapon to Charlie's head and pulled the trigger. At such close range, it was, of course, fatal. Blood spattered everywhere an Charlie headless body fell over dead. Sam was covered in the other marine's blood and gore.
The Brecourt then pointed his weapon at the Brecourt that he had commanded to kill "one of them". He said, "When I tell you to act I expect immediate action. Do as I say, when I say it without question. Next time its you who will be lying there dead. Now. Throw his body down the stairs and you..." here he indicated to one of the other Beacourt, "...you watch this one."
Sam was so angry he was shaking. He wanted to throttle that asshole. The commander noticed and clearly enjoying it said, "Try anything...I dare you. Your cause is lost here Human. If your forces land, the entire landing site has been mined. If they try to leave, we will level the city from orbit. If your people do anything...anything...that I have not anticipated; then I will level this region from orbit and explode all of the civillian structures. No one is coming to rescue you. You have lost and you and your friends will die." He stood up to his full height and put the barrel of his weapon to Sam's head. He said to the other three Brecourt, "If he tries anything. If they try and rescue him. Blow his monkey's brains all over the wall. Activate your obfuscation units. Do not fail me."
Two Brecourt left the room and took positions to trap and capture anyone coming up the stairwell. Sweat and intense anger dripped off of Sam as he weighed his life against those of the air support wing that was falling into a trap and marines that were going to get killed trying to rescue him. And the barrel of the gun was pressed against his forehead and the Brecourt guard stared and snarled at him.
As Sam looked up at the brute holding a gun to his head, a small red dot suddenly appeared at the point directly between the Brecourt's three eyes.
Sam saw the small red dot and smiled, "oh...hell's yeah!" He said as his smile grew wider.
The Brecourt pressed the weapon firmer against Sam. The red dot was centered and the shot was a good, clean and perfect one. His captor smirked and said, "Beg for mercy? I am focused on ending you."
Sam said, "Looks like you're not the only one with a laser focus."
The Brecourt snarled down at Sam. Then his head disappeared in a cloud of purple blood and gore.
Woolheater recovered from the gory, bloody spray. He rolled to his right and recovered his rifle and with a fluid move that was startling, he chambered a round and fired at the rushing guard. The Brecourt body armor took most of the blow but it was enough to send him staggering back. Samuel was on his feet, he rushed the guard, and body slammed him out the same twelfth floor window that the Brecourt used to jump him. Locked in a death embrace, the Brecourt fell backwards out of the window and landing hard on the ledge still held onto Sam. His grip was on Sam's body armor.
"Mmmnnnnfff!", Sam grunted as he held on. He was holding onto the edges of the window sill in an effort not to be pulled over the edge and fall with the Brecourt guard. The guard had been hit and was bleeding purple blood but a single round to the body armor was not going to take this guy down. His three eyes narrowed and he snarled up as Sam held on. If Sam let go, they would both surely fall to their death. And behind him, Sam heard the voices and familiar sounds of Starfleet issued marine weapons - the sweetest sound he heard all day. Samuel's K-Bar was strapped to his thigh and the Brecourt saw it. He reached for it with one hand as Sam tried to shake him loose. The Brecourt was going to use Woolheater's own knife against him.
The shoulder of the arm that held Sam, along with the chest below it, suddenly jerked, as the opposite side exploded from within. As the Brecourt let go and fell, another powerful report sounded from the east.
Climbing back into the building, panting for air and angry as fuck, Sam looked out over to where he thought the shots came. Nobody but David was that good. It had to be Tonelly. Sam extended his hand and gave a thumbs up. And he said clearly so David could read his lips, "THANK YOU!"
Man'darr and Gami finished with the other Brecourt Guards in the room. "You ok, Captain," Gami asked, stepping over the Brecourt she had killed.
Sam turned around and said, "Chief! Gunney! It's good to see you. You gotta get on the COMM, warn the Colonel not to land. This whole area is a trap. The Brecourt mined the LZ and they know we're coming. Warn the Colonel not to land! And alert the air group. I heard the Brecourt say that they were going to attack the fleet." He was urgent, he was covered in both red and purple blood; it was disgusting. He looked around for anything useful from the fallen Brecourt guard and said as he searched, "You made quick work of the guards. They have some new tech, some kind of a cloak. Obfuscation units I heard them call it. Did you see any?" he asked as he searched the Brecourt.
MAGNETIC SOUTH POLE
"Launch your fighters commander. Wipe them out. All of them!"
Using the southern magnetic pole to mask their warp signatures and their obfuscation technology to hide from the Federation forces, a Brecourt carrier came to life and started moving towards the Starfleet orbital positions. As it did so, three large hangar bay doors opened and two dozen fighters launched. Looking like angry bees they formed up and then sped away towards the fighter group. The sun was behind them and as long as they had the upper hand they would catch Starfleet unprepared and destroy the fighter air support group. They came charging at them...weapons hot!
The Brecourt commander of the carrier said, "As soon as we are in position...scortch the surface. Kill everything that moves. Today; Starfleet learns that Brecourt II will never yield!" And a cheer went up among them on the carrier and in the fighters.
"SHIT!" Came a call from Blue 4. "Bandits! Bandits! We have a whole carrier group! Evas....!" His call was cut short as enemy weapons fire turned his fighter to ashes, his remaining brethren desperately weaving and dodging amongst terrain and the empty sky to get away, gain distance, and just plain not die.
BRECOURT ii - THE SURFACE
At the moment, the drop ships were starting to land as the hatch door on Naxea's drop ship opened, the Marines rushed out.
The proximity mines started coming to life. They would poke out of the ground when activated. They had a long, one meter length extention, it looked like a tall sprinkler head. These didn't spray water though. They first produced a phaser arc. A perfect 360 degree circle that was about two meters in diamater. If you were standing near it and you didn't have body armor on, you'd have your legs cut off. Or your knees depending on how tall you were. That lasted only about ten seconds. Body armor could survive it long enough to get out of the way. But if you were unlucky to find yourself in a field of them - it was rather unpleasant. After the phaser arc was done. The little "sprinkler head" would pop off and elevate itself to about two meters and then explode. It was a compact, high yield explosive and it was meant to knock the fallen troops from their legs, if they still had them only slightly cut. Othrwise, it was a nasty concussiove wave that tended to lift the soldiers off their feet and slam them 5-10 meters away, setting off more mines. This is what met the Colonel and her marines. As that was not bad enough, the Brecourt stated to rain fire from positions all over the field. From turret mounted weapons mostly. But, there were also fighters that were bearing down on them.
From his vantage point, David watched in horror, as the trap that had been set for them was sprung. "NO!!" He screamed, as he watched his brothers and sisters start to get cut down by the mines.
Samuel heard the distinct whine of the drop ships and saw marines discharging from the drop ships. He had no COMM link anymore; it had been destroyed earlier. He also watched with horror as the mines detonated.
As the dust started to settle on the LZ, he broke radio silence. "Mama Bear, this is Rip Van Winkle, please report status, over!" He then waited on baited breath, silently praying to the Goddesses that no one had died in the cowardly attack.
Naxea reacted with the only thing she knew--they had to get out of the open as soon as possible. Their armor offered enough protection against the first offense of these mines. "Drop down and toss grenades! Drop Pilot, extend shields as far as possible!" Naxea yelled as she did tossed a photon grenade at the moment the air shimmered a bluish color as the drop ship extended it's shields. The Marines followed pursuit, as the explosions from the photon grenades had a rippling effect. In a moment, it seemed like the planet itself had exploded to the Marines on the ground.
After what seemed an eternity, Naxea pushed herself to her feet. "Move! Get to cover!" she commanded as she began sprinting, seeing several Marines near her get up and join her in sprinting for cover as they dodged small craters caused by the exploded mines as she heard David's comm. "Do your best to lay down suppressing fire on those turrets!"
"Aye, Ma'am!" came the disembodied reply. Seconds later, explosive rounds started to pepper the various turrets surrounding the LZ. Two exploded in enormous fireballs, while the rest started to quiet down. The brief lull in enemy fire gave the Colonel and the surviving Marines the window they needed to get to cover.
Naxea and the rest of the Marines ducked into a building that appeared to be out of the firing zone. She would need a moment to regroup her Marines.
Sam, still holding his rifle turned from waching the LZ getting cut to pieces and said to Chief Man'darr and Sgt. Gami, "C'mon! We're going. I need a new COMM badge and I need your help to search that structure at two 'o'clock. I saw at least four civillians enter and they were carrying their wounded. Let's get them out and back to the ship and get the hell out of here."
Gami and Man'darr nodded as Gami took point, being the lowest ranked of the three as well as being an experienced combat telepath made her the natural choice as Man'darr covered the rear.
It took twenty agonizing minutes to traverse the distance. In mostly open terrain and always under the threat of sniper and rocket fire. They searched the structure as quickly and as quietly as they could. They found nothing. Save for fresh footprints in the dust; the civvies were long gone.
