The Medical Runabout was cleaned and ready waiting for the away team in the shuttle bay.
Zac had received orders to report to the shuttle bay, to the medical runabout specifically for an away mission. Figuring his role was to be security and protection for the other members of the away team. He first made a stop at the armory and got a phaser and a tricorder before making his way to the shuttle bay,
J'air received her orders too and, after checking with her boss, the Chief Medical Officer - and coincidentally team leader as well, she set off to the Shuttle Bay with her "Away" Medkit and a large empty backpack for carrying back her share of whatever medical supplies they might find, to bring them back to the Runabout.
She was excited to go and explore the marooned Frigate and hoped for a good haul of supplies as they were getting pretty short of their own, whilst awaiting for improved volume of Replicator refills. Everyone was doing the same and all departments had felt the pinch, but this was an unexpected windfall for which they all had high hopes. She arrived shortly after Zac and greeted him warmly.
"Hi!" she beamed. "Time for another adventure? We mustn't keep making a habit of this..... but then again......why not? It's fun! How have you been keeping since the last one?"
Zac smiled broadly as J'air entered the shuttle bay. "Hi!" He returned happy to see her. He nodded, "Time for another adventure." He agreed. "I agree with you, why not. I hope this one is as fun as the last one."
J'air grinned, her cheeks colouring with a slight blush. "Me too!" she agreed.
Sthilg was next through the door already wearing his space suit though he was lacking his helmet. He carried a box in his hand. Approaching he gave a nod to Zac and J'air. " Hello there everyone. Ready to get underway?" He enquired.
"Hello sir." Zac greeted the CMO politely. "I'm ready. Just waiting to see who else is coming with us."
The gorn nooded as he opened the case and pulled out two scanners. " Here I've loaded thessse with the most common drugsss in the medical database. Ssshould make any findingsss easssier to sssort."
Zac took one of the scanners and attached it to his hip, silently hoping not to have to use it. "Think we will find anything useful over there sir?" He asked the CMO.
"I doubt it very much..." M'Tuuri chimed in as she padded towards the group in full EVA. "But it doesn't hurt to look." She added while walking past everyone and heading straight for the Runabout.
Catching the end of the other woman's expression of doubt as Tate injured and headed toward the run about, "if recent events have taught me anything, it's that we can be creative and resourceful to survive." There was no question Tate was depressed when they first had to evacuate the ship, and she was still frustrated and sad about a lot of things, but the truth was, her survival instinct was strong as well as her desire to make her life meaningful. She had resolved if this was all there was going to be from this point forward, she had a duty to nurture and show as much optimism as she possibly could. That was her commitment when she joined Starfleet.
J'air took the second scanner that her boss offered, although she already had her "away" medical kit with her so had a smaller 'medcorder' of her own and so would be happy to offer the new one to anyone who might need it, if that event occurred.
Putting all her gear into the shuttle, J'air donned the appropriate extras to her own suit, all except the helmet of course, and climbed aboard. Her spaceproof gauntlets were cumbersome but as she didn't have any current need for fine tuned handling, she didn't see why not wear them and save having to rummage around for them later. Her boots were heavy as were all EVA gear was but they wore them a lot on the ice planet just for keeping warm in the frozen temperatures, so she was a lot more used to them than she'd ever been before this mission.
The ensign in the pilot's seat began the departure sequence. "Closing hatch" they announced. "Please take your seats!"
Already seated, J'air pulled her kit closer to her so as not to intrude on the person next to her's space.
The shuttle took off and began tracking its way towards its destination. "our eta is 15 minutes"
~15 minutes~ the tension was rising as the journey ate up the remaining minutes and J'air felt like a cadet, going on a first mission.
" Helmetsss on everyone." Sthilg said as they began approaching the ship. Looking out of the shuttle view screen the lizard was amazed at the mysterious wreck before them.
Zac picked up his helmet and snapped into place and then double checked the connections to make sure all were locked. He smiled at J'air. "The adventure begins."
Tate took a deep breath before donning her own helmet, never quite able to shake the claustrophobia it elicited.
Sthilg was first down the ramp of the shuttle. As his lights shone around the darkness he noticed that everything was covered with a thin layer of ice. Odd-looking machinery scattered the floors and wall the thin ice reflecting back at the small away team. " Sssalt water." he said after running a scanner around the room. " They may have been an aquatic ssspeechesss."
Zac looked at the others and then back to the CMO, "Aquatic? If that is so, wouldn't the entire ship be full of water, so they could just swim from one point to another?" He asked as he looked at his scanner which was showing nothing.
"Ah, but nature has a way of providing all sorts of creative combinations," Tate remarked, "especially in a universe in which beings must be adaptable." As she scanned, she hoped this didn't mean they wouldn't find useful supplies.
Zac nodded and hung his head. "Sorry, I wasn't thinking. You are right Counselor. Of course one has to adapt to survive."
~that's for sure!~ J'Air commented silently within her thoughts. Not wishing to become too distracted though, she moved along with the rest of the away team, her med-scanner on and checking the whole environment.
"I wonder if those evolved creatures were killed or what reason made them all leave, if not." she asked, although it was probably a rhetorical question as clearly it was too soon for anyone to know the exact answer to that yet.
" Thisss ssship had plenty of holesss in it. " Sthilg added as he lead the way towards the biggest corridor leading away from the landing bay. " Make sure to lock the shuttle." He called back to his team.
The ensign in the pilot's seat offered to stay with the shuttle, if they might not be of a lot of help seeking out medical supplies.
The gorn nodded but reminded her to lock the shuttle ramp. He'd been on far to many lifeless hulks to be proven wrong. A thin layer of ice covered the corridor though the gorn eyes were drawn to the ceiling in which what looked like handrails ran along the ceiling.
Following her boss' gaze, J'air looked up as well. "Do you think this room was full of water once?" she asked the gorn.
M'Tuuri pushed ahead, not content with sightseeing. "Most likely..." She chirped over helmet comms with a disinterested tone. "Which meansss, if we come across any sssealed doors, opurrning them could purrse a risk."
"Good point" J'air agreed. "We'll have to scan each closed door and measure any pressure behind them. It will slow us down but it's preferable to an early bath!"
Tate chuckled but kept her focus alternating between straightahead and looking up at the ceiling where other people seemed interested. "If those are handrails, I wonder if that means the people who inhabited the ship weren't aquatic? Who needs handrails if you can swim?"
Zac followed Tate's look at the ceiling. "Good point counselor. Another mystery for us to solve."
Sthilg nodded as his scanner started bleeping faintly. Leading the way they reached a large door that towered above them all. " Let'sss ssseee what we have in here." Sthilg said as he began looking for a way to open the door.
J'Air tries to scan the door but her medcorder wasn't reading anything organic or biological so she switched to a Tricorder and was able to read the metal alloy the door was made of. She tried to extend the range, hoping to get an idea of what might be beyond the door but was unsuccessful. Instead she turned her attention to assisting the CMO to try to open the door and began pressing buttons or panels or pulling on anything protruding that might be a mechanical lever.
It wasn't long before there was a huge, loud grinding noise and the door began to vibrate - starting to move. It wasn't all moving, just a smaller hatch in the centre but low down in the main door and it wasn't clear whose efforts had set it off to start opening, but it was doing something, that was one thing that was undeniable.
"Um guys, whatever you did, the door is opening, and I strongly suggest you step back so we can see what is happening." Zac spoke, his phaser coming up as the door continued to open.
Sthilg brought his artificial arm up in it's shield configuration projecting an energy shield around his team. The hatch slid open as a faint mist crept from within. Giving his team a nod, the gorn lead the way having to duck under the hatch to fit through. Inside was another chamber filled with pillars that stretched to the massive ceiling. Attached to each of the pillars were cylindrical tubes. " It looksss like thisss may be the ssshipsss ssstorage bay." Sthilg said out loud as he began looking around the room.
Serving in Starfleet involved a good deal of the mundane followed by moments of sheer terror, or sheer terror mixed with anticipation. Landing on this world had been sheer terror only, and while the mist and the opening of the unusual door brought with it plenty of fear, Tate couldn't help but feel curious and excited -- and of course, relieved, when nothing and no one seemed prepared to kill them...for now. "Let's hope whomever stayed here prepared for all sorts of scenarios we can benefit from."
J'Air scanned the tubes, attempting to see if it was possible to tell what was inside them.
Sthilg had gotten to work scanning the tubes though his eyes kept looking upward. How did they get any of them down seeing there didn't appear to be any way of moving them? A bleep from his scanner made him look down. " I have one over here." He said approaching one of the cylinders.
Tate made no effort to keep the surprise from her voice. "One what? Life sign?"
" No sssupliesss. One of the canissstersss at the top of thisss one." Sthilg said gesturing up at the pillar.
"Oh, has one fallen from the top? Or was someone just starting a new stack?" J'Air asked.
" No one at the top.." Sthilg said before his eyes were drawn to a strange cube like box at the pillars base. A peg stuck within one of the holes near the top. Letting out a hum the lizard drew the peg out and slid it into the lower hole. With a wire an ancenot power source flicked into life as the tubes began to move down the pillar. " There we go." The gorn said with a triumph tone in his voice. " Let's get all of these sscaned sssee if we can find anything useful." He said to his team as they got about their work.
"On it sir." Zac said as he began to scan the canisters.
Avalon's voice came through the Comms. ["Commander, the Commodore requests all crew return as soon as possible The Debris field is getting unstable"]
Hearing this and anticipating their need for a quick exit, J'Air began to pack up her equipment and med-kit, awaiting confirmation orders from her CMO.
Sthilg acknowledged Avalon and began hurrying his team and the supplies back to the shuttle. They were away with a hold full of needed supplies which would definitely aid the ship.
