Teevs swallowed nervously as he adjusted his attire for the sixth time. He had only ever seen the predecessor to the Fourth House in person, so to be in the presence of all four of the Houses meant that expectations were high. Despite the rather casual recollection when Orin had returned from the first contact meeting, Teevs needed to see it for himself to believe it.
Then again, he convinced all four of them to come to the ship for a formal luncheon.
"I still can't believe you pulled this off, Mister Orin," he commented, peeling his eyes away from the transporter pad toward his diplomatic friend.
Andrinn was standing in the transporter room in something different than his typical dress uniform. He had done it where he wore something that blended both his cultures. Trill and El Aurian. He watched as Teevs kept adjusting his outfit and Andrinn said, "Eventually, you're going to wear out that poor shirt before anyone arrives."
At that, Teevs stopped touching his shirt and crossed his hands behind his back. "Sorry, I've just never seen all four of them in person, so I'm a little nervous. And since I've been a representative of my people while aboard your ship, I really hope I did it justice."
Orin looked over at Teevs with a small smile and said, "You did, Teevs. I just hope that we did a good one and didn't overload them with too much information. There was a lot of exchanges, even before now."
Teevs chuckled briefly. "I guess we both have something to be nervous about."
"Butterflies in the stomach, Teevs. Butterflies," Orin said chuckling himself, as that was something they had shared and talked about before.
"Sir, they're ready," the transporter operator informed.
"Showtimes ladies and gentlemen. Beam them up," Orin said as he looked back at the transporter chief.
The transporter pad lit up with multiple beams of light, bringing eight figures into view. The four leaders stood out by their decorative attire, and beside each House was their royal guard. All four guards donned the dark blue uniform with the white and silver dress jacket on top.
Seeing the delegation, Teevs swallowed and immediately lowered his gaze. He crossed his arms in front of him in the formal greeting. Regardless of what Orin had described, he wasn't about to chance any potential for misunderstanding with his own people.
Orin offered up the same greeting to the delegation and said, "Welcome to the Federation Starship Elysium. We hope that we didn't keep you waiting long?"
Emeyr beamed as she excitedly stepped off the transporter pad. "Not at all, Legate!"
Vanei stepped off the transporter pad next, giving Emeyr's excitement a slight smile. "Remember, Lady Emeyr, we are representing our people," she said gently. To Orin, she gave a dip of her head. "You must be Legate Orin. Lady Emeyr and Lady Relou have been speaking highly of your visit. I hear that this invitation was your idea, yes?"
"Yes! I thought that, by the excitement I witness down on the planet, that it would be a good idea to maybe have some of the leaders of the houses up for a visit. Maybe share stories over a nice meal?" Orin said with a smile. He looked back at everyone and said, "Also, this is Major Mattias Richardson and Captain Joshua Young of my protection team. And this.....is Teevs. He's been with us for a bit of time and is the member of your species that told us about....how amazing his homeworld and people were."
"We are grateful that your commodore agreed. This is an historic moment for our people." Vanei nodded to each of the people Orin introduced. "Pleased to meet you. I'm Lady Vanei and this is Lady Sama," she gestured to the figure in dark blue. "You've met Lady Emeyr and Lady Relou."
Standing behind Orin's left shoulder, Mattias offered the traditional Lonian salute of greeting that Teevs had taught him, dipping his head respectfully. "It's and honor, Ma'am," he replied first to Lady Vanei, then repeated the gesture for her colleague, "Ma'am."
Josh followed Mattias's lead and gave the traditional Lonian salute and dipped his head. He remained silent taking the not speaking until spoken too approach,
Vanei then turned her focus toward Teevs. "Not many Lonians leave our planet. How long have you been aboard this ship, Mister Teevs?"
By the stars. They were speaking to him. Teevs could feel his pulse in the collar of his shirt. "A third of a cycle, your Grace," he replied. With how often he had to do time conversions, switching from a Federation year to Lonian cycles came easily now.
Relou looked at the Lonian curiously. "If I may ask, why did you leave our planet?"
"To see what was beyond our star system, and to meet new people," Teevs responded. He opted to not mention that he wasn’t a fan of Lady Sama's policies while she was right in front of him, but he was still telling the truth. "I became a tradesman to sustain myself. The Elysium helped me when my ship got stuck in a planet's gravity well."
What an interesting story. "I'm relieved to hear of their generosity, and that you made it home safely." To Orin, she added, "I hope he has represented our people well."
Josh stood out of the way but close enough to act if he needed. He listened to Teevs and the others converse and it was all polite almost too polite as no one wanted to say anything out of the way that could possibly be misconstrued.
"He definitely has made quite an impression with the crew. If you ladies don't mind following me and we can escort you guys," Orin offered up, letting the leaders walk out of the transporter room first.
Vanei gave a nod of the head, and the group exited the transporter room before letting Orin lead the way.
Relou took the opportunity to speak up. "Are there any behaviours that may be perceived as offensive to your crew? You know so much about us, so we are at a slight disadvantage."
"I think that I'll let Teevs talk about that a little bit from what he's seen over his time onboard. But, I think that as you remember that all of the crew aren't the same and they're just regular people like myself, Teevs, Major Richardson, Captain Young, and so many more, I think you'll be good. Just.....be the amazing leaders that you appear to be. We strive for perfection, but also lean into our human imperfections too and learn from them," Orin said with a smile.
As the party left the transporter room, Mattias lead the protection detail after the ambassadors keeping their own protective agents under a close eye. His wasn't the job of being overly polite. Instead, he was here, solely to keep Orin safe, and lead his agents to keep the rest of the Ambassadorial staff, and visitors, safe.
With a look that sarcastically thanked Orin for, as the Humans called it, throwing him in front of a shuttle, Teevs explained some of the customs he'd observed while aboard. The whole discussion took up most of the walk to the diplomatic suite. "Those about summarize the general mannerisms, considering the number of species aboard."
Relou and Emeyr listened with their curious excitement, and Vanei kept her curiosity polite. Sama paid the least attention as she took in their surroundings, her own curiosity muted into neutrality.
Vanei gave Teevs a polite nod and a small smile. "Thank you, Mister Teevs. Your efforts are noticed. Since you know these people, will you formally present the Sovereignty to them?"
That made Teevs blink in surprise. Presenting the heirs was a consul's job, a title he certainly did not have. If he had been asked sooner, he wouldn't have been stammering about it, but they were right down the corridor from the room where the lunch was organised! "I... it would be my honour, your Grace," he replied, fighting the urge to nervously adjust his shirt again.
"Hey! That's a great honor, Mr. Teevs! It sounds like you're about to a very popular man," Orin said as they made it to their destination. Orin looked at the delegation and said, "I think that the Commodore wanted to speak with you before anything else. She should be right that door. But, we will see each other once again at the meal later on. Until then, your graces," Orin said as he did the proper bow before heading out with his team and Teevs.
