The morning hummed along with the unhurried pace of one strolling the beach. Sub-Lieutenant Kesai sat at the reception desk, going through paperwork and other administrative procedures. The faint hum of transporter beams didn't strike her with attention-worthy importance, but the few seconds of weapons fire did. The silence that followed made her pulse quicken, and she hesitantly checked if there was a drill scheduled for today. There wasn't.
The bloodied body of a Lonian guard was sent flying through the door, his chest having been crushed by the enormous force from a combat boot that had sent him flying backwards with an almost inhuman roar as the 6'7" tall Capellan, Man'darr followed through. These little people kidnapped fellow crew and more importantly his CO which enraged him. His eyes immediately went to the clerk, leveling his Heavy Assault Phaser Rifle as her and squeezed the trigger.
Kesai's eyes widened when a guard's body flew through the door, and she barely had time to react before the weapons fire struck her in the chest. It rocked her backwards like a rag doll, and after a couple seconds she slid lff the chair to thump onto the floor.
The guard disappeared through the doorway with Man'darr's boot practically stamped into his chest. Captain Samuel Woolheater came through immediately behind him, phaser rifle shouldered, muzzle tracking across the room as the rest of the assault element poured through the breach.
Moments before, both Marine teams, reinforced with integrated Romulan shock troops, had transported into the main prisoner-processing entrance.
Woolheater barely reacted when the Lonian guard went sailing through the doorway ahead of Man-darr.
"Fuckin' A, Marine. Remind me to put Man-darr at the top of the list whenever we need somebody to knock."
There wasn't time to enjoy the joke.
"TEAM A! TEAM B! MOVE!"
Sam swept his rifle across his sector as the assault elements poured through the breach. Starfleet Marines moved beside Romulans who, only weeks and months ago, had belonged to another military, another government, another way of life. Woolheater had integrated them. After the Circinus version of SFMC boot camp, there had been practical reasons for it. They needed trained personnel. They needed people who could fight. But somewhere between planning the operation and stepping through that door, the distinction had stopped mattering. Like all things Circinus, it was brutally practical.
Can you carry the rifle?
Can you hold your sector?
Will you go through the door beside me?
Will you bring the Marine next to you home?
Good. You're a Marine. Move. Red blood. Green blood. Purple blood. Today, nobody gave a damn what color you bled. Today, they were all Marines.
Moses moved at a steady pace, mowing down the Lonian security guards that were foolish to step into his line of fire, the gatlin phaser cannon screaming fire in rapid succession through the corridors. These people had taken their friends, their family. He had zero sympathy for any of them in how they met their end today.
Master Sergeant Nenaa panned around the area with her R100, looking for snipers or anyone trying to set up an ambush. She let the rest of her team watch the local area as they moved as one.
The detention center had stopped sounding like a building. Phaser fire cracked through the corridors, alarms wailed overhead and smoke gathered beneath the ceiling. Somewhere ahead, Lonian security had recovered from the shock of the breach and begun firing back in organized bursts. A shot struck the wall near Sam and showered his helmet and shoulders with fragments of composite paneling.
Woolheater dropped behind cover and checked the tactical display on his rifle mounted combat tricorder. High Security was still ahead. That was all that mattered. "Bravo! Don't get sucked into the fight!" Sam shouted over the weapons fire. "We're not here to clear the goddamn building!"
He leaned out, fired two controlled bursts down the corridor and ducked back as the Lonians answered. "Nenaa! Gami! Suppress that junction! Romulan element, right side!" Woolheater, covered in dust, looked back at the Marines stacked along the corridor. Human. Romulan. Didn't fucking matter. He raised his rifle.
"OUR PEOPLE ARE THAT WAY!" Sam pointed toward High Security. "MOVE!"
"I'll do more than suppress it," Gami said, taking a photon grenade in her hand, selecting medium setting, pressing the button and tossing it. The grenade landed perfectly among the Lonian guards who barely had time to react before the grenade exploded, instantly silencing the Lonian guards who now lay bloodied, burned, and broken. A second later Gami spotted more guards moving in. "Oh good, more target practice," she said, smiling as she leveled her CQB Pulse rifle and fired, catching the first guard mid stride in the chest, dropping him.
The Romulans moved with their Starfleet counterparts seamlessly, ensuring no Lonian forces struck the teams from the rear.
After the initial shock of the suprise assault wore off, the Lonian forces started to regroup and even started to score a few kills of their own, the two Romulan Marines who fell though, were quickly avenged by the rest of the allied troops.
"Hold it down!" One guard shouted.
When a trio of Lonian guards leapt upon another Romulan, the larger man howled in anger, pulling his dagger, and slashed his way clear. With his elevated strength, combined with his blood rage, he grabbed one Lonian by the top of his head and squeezed until the smaller man's skull crushed and brain matter squished between the Romulan's fingers.
Woolheater's eyes caught the two Romulans down behind them. For half a second, everything else narrowed. Green blood. Starfleet armor. Marine equipment. Marines all the same. The Romulans had earned it. Woolheater looked to one of the few remaining medics in the detachment.
"Corpsman! Two down!" Woolheater pointed back toward them. "Get them stabilized and get them out of here!" One of the Marines started to move past the fallen Romulans toward the fight.
Sam caught him by the shoulder. "No." He pointed at the two bodies. "They earned it and this is who we are...we don't leave Marines behind godammit!" The Marine nodded and dropped beside them. Only then did Sam turn back toward High Security.
The assault force reached the first junction. "TEAM A! STANDARD SECURITY! MOVE!"
Sam pointed them toward their avenue of advance and watched as Team A peeled away down the adjoining corridor.
Then he turned, "TEAM B! HIGH SECURITY! ON ME!" The second element moved with him. "Romulan element, take the right! Gami, Nenaa, left side! Swede, watch our six! Keep this corridor open!"
Liam nodded as he stayed right behind the group, planting small demo charges as they went. He was going to level as much of this place as he could, after they got their people out.
Marine Captain Joshua Young and his two man team broke off from the main group. They had a very special mission to find the evidence lockers. He raised a hand and the trio moved like ghosts down the corridor towards where Intel had said the evidence lockers were,
Then, the corridor ahead erupted. Phaser fire struck the wall beside Woolheater hard enough to send molten fragments spraying across the passage. Sam dropped behind the corner as another volley tore through the space where Team B had been advancing seconds earlier. These weren't surprised guards anymore. The Lonians had built themselves a defensive position. Through the smoke, Sam could make out overturned security barriers spanning the corridor and at least half a dozen weapons firing from behind them. Beyond the barricade, something shimmered across the passage.
A forcefield.
Then someone on the Lonian side realized what was happening. A voice rose above the alarms., "THEY'RE HEADED FOR HIGH SECURITY! SEAL THE WING!"
Sam looked toward the tactical display, "Shit." The route to High Security began disappearing behind security fields one section at a time. One forcefield illuminated the way then...Two...and now three. They weren't trying to stop the Marines anymore. They were trying to buy time.
Woolheater leaned around the corner and fired a short burst toward the barricade before snapping back behind cover. "CONTACT FRONT! HARD POINT!" He looked over his shoulder. "Gami! Nenaa! Keep their heads down!" Then toward the Marines and Romulans stacked behind them. "Swede! Find me a way through that field!"
Another burst hammered the corner. Sam tapped his comm. =/\= Captain Young! They've figured out what we're after. They're locking the facility down. Whatever you're doing down there, do it fast. =/\=
He looked toward the shimmering barrier again. Their people were somewhere beyond it. And somebody on the other side now knew they were coming. "Team B!" Woolheater shouted. "We're going through!"
=^= We have our prize, moving to extraction point. Resistance is still light but beginning to pick up.=^= Was Josh's reply.
Liam hurried forward when Woolheater called out to him. Seeing the obstacles, he worked fast, planting charges where the field emitters were positioned in the walls. He made sure to use shape charges, to cause the most damage to the system, while still keeping the corridor in one piece for them to move through. "FIRE IN THE HOLE!" He shouted as he stepped behind some cover, then detonated the first charges.
Before the dust settled, he hurried forward, to set up the next set of charges, exploded those, then cleared the third field. "Path clear!!" He called out to Woolheater.
Sam looked through the settling dust at the three dead force fields. The young combat engineer had done exactly what he'd been asked to do, clearing a path forward under fire. It was good work.
“Outstanding!” Sam said.
Woolheater raised his rifle and waved Team B forward. “BRAVO! HIGH SECURITY WING! MOVE!”
