Season 6: Episode 7: Crossroads of Destiny
Location: Niea IV : Detention Centre
Timeline: MD5
3274 words - 6.5 OF Standard Post Measure
The stifling silence of the prison was broken by an alarm, the lights changing to an orange/amber pulse. Shortly after, guards were passing down the corridor of the standard security wing with haste. In the distance, weapons fire could be heard. Orders shouted. An explosion.
Anna did nothing immediately. She did not know the situation. She turned towards the entrance to her cell and readied herself, alert and ready to respond as things developed.
N'vok blinks awake. "Everyone, you may wish to move away from the windows and doors," he says, remembering the small size of the cell, "as best you can."
The explosions gave Addison her first hope in what seemed to be forever.
In the corridor, CWO Man'darr fired his heavy pulse phaser rifle in full automatic mode, down the corridor into a death sentence for anyone not in heavy cover as two guards were ripped to pieces by the weapon. The rage burned within him, fueling him and yet, he felt completely at home thanks to his experience, training, and Capellan blood as he made his way down the corridor towards the cells.
Rin hadn't moved from her bunk since she had been put in her cell. In time, she had fallen asleep. Time to conserve energy and give her system time to repair. Now, the unfolding chaos brought her back to consciousness. Clearly, this was not a minor security breach. The explosions suggested either some type of major sabotage or a serious incursion of some sort. A rescue? Possibly, but there were any number of other possibilities, and not all of them advantageous for the prisoners. Enemy of your enemy is not nearly always your friend. Sometimes it's just more enemies.
And if it was a rescue? Then this entire event - whatever that might be - had become a diplomatic catastrophe. None of this made sense. Teevs had given them no hint of instability, and yet...here they were, being interrogated about Teevs, no less.
This was some kind of internal issue, Rin guessed. She could theorize a half dozen scenarios, but she didn't have enough data to place one as more likely that the others.
She opened her eyes. The right was doing significantly better, which she had expected. Neural pathways were being repaired. But her left had sustained considerable physical trauma. All it was doing was sending wild flashes of color across her field of view, which was even less helpful than not working at all.
She sat up and swung her legs off the side of the bed. There she sat, waiting for whatever came next. She kept her eyes unfocused. If it was the guards that reached them first, it was 100% in her best interest for them to consider her more disabled than she was.
As the team moved, Moses and a squad of the Romulan Marines held the rear guard, ensuring no one got behind the team. Then, once the prisoners were liberated, he and his squad would be the forward blockers, clearing the way for the team to exfil.
Both Emily and Leilani practically leapt to their feet at the sound, especially Emily who was desperate to get the hell away back to the ship and her family.
Zac was in his cell when he heard the sound of battle reached his ears. He swung off the cot he had been lying on and moved to the front of cell to get a better idea of what was going on. "Emily?" He shouted, "Can you see anything?"
Emily looked out trying to see. “Not yet!”
Hearing all of the commotion, Tate's stomach lurched in dread as she strained to see what was happening. Just a few moments earlier, she was praying for any opportunity to get out of this weird limbo, but now that something was finally happening beyond sitting in a cell with her own thoughts, she found herself wishing for the relative silence.
As Man'darr advanced down the red glowing corridor, his eyes searched ahead of him as a Lonian guard rushed around the corridor around full sprint, holding a baton that hummed. Man'darr didn't have enough time to get a bearing on the guard as he dropped his weapon and snatched the guard by the neck with one hand and the wrist holding the baton with the other. Man'darr didn't squeezed hard with his right hand as it tightened around the wrist of the guard who let out a scream as he had no choice but to drop the baton. "You didn't think this out did you, short stuff?" he asked, lifting the guard off the deck as if he weighed no more than a toddler. Man'darr's eyes snapped to to side corridor where another guard rushed. He only smiled as let go of the arm and grabbed the Lonian he held by the neck with both hands now. With a grunt twisted and knelt a little as he swung the Lonian over his shoulder making solid contact with the other Lonian guard as a sickening crack was heard as the guard's neck Man'darr was holding snapped, causing the other to fall backwards to fall backwards with the deceased Lonian on top of him. Man'darr' knelt down and picked up his weapon, leveling it at the bloodied and dazed surviving guard and pressed the trigger as phaser bolts ripped into the guard.
The door to the prison cells laid ahead. "We need to breach this door," he said, looking at the security door.
As the rest of the team reached his position, Moses heard Man'darr speak. Stepping forward, he aimed his gatlin cannon at the door. "Fire in the hole!" The big man shouted. He then depressed the trigger and a steady stream of super heated energy blasts started pouring into the wall around the door, cutting through the dense material almost as easily as a hot knife through butter.
A few seconds later, Moses released his trigger, and, in the smokey ruins, the heavy steel doors finally fell inward, as the wall that it had been attached to nolonger existed.
Moses looked over at Man'darr and smirked. "You should see me bake a cake, brother!"
The team pushed forward, and eventually turned into a corridor that contained prison cells.
"Starfleet Marines!" he called out as he moved into the room before turning to the other Marines. "Let's get these cells open."
With the marines now identifying themselves, backed up by the sound of Federation phaser fire, Rin got to her feet, hand on the wall. She didn't move toward the cell door. If the marines were going to take down the forcefields with force, she wanted to give them room to do so. But she wanted to be ready to move when the time came.
The Marines began to fire their phasers at the control panels at each cell, causing the fields to drop. "Fields down! Let's move! Marines, help any who require it," Man'darr called out as he spotted Rin moving a bit slower. "Commander," he greeted moving towards her. "Do you require assistance?"
"I do. Just guide me in the right direction," Rin replied.
Seeing the condition of Rin as he approached her more closely, filled him with anger. He gently took her hand into his.. "Follow me. We're getting you and everyone else out of here. He began to make his way back to the extraction zone.
Anna stumbled out of the cell as the Marines burst it opened. She moved quickly to join the rest of the group.
N'vok moved to help Anna. "We will be back aboard soon." He nodded his thanks to the Marines as they passed by.
Anna leaned slightyl against N'vok for a moment but then straightened. "Are you all right?" she asked him.
She nodded to the nearest Marine. "Thank you."
"They have been very efficient," said N'vok. "I am well. I do hope that T'sai has not been too worried."
Tate wanted exhale in relief when she caught sight of the marines and was granted her freedom, but she didn't dare. She knew any hope she had of getting answers and finding a peaceful solution was lost the moment the first door was forcibly breached. It also meant they weren't out of the woods yet.
Elsewhere in the detention center, as Team A pushed through the standard-security wing, Woolheater checked the tactical display. From his position with Team B, he could track their general progress but little else. He opened the Marine tactical channel.
=/\= Team A, Woolheater. SITREP. =/\=
Sam released the transmit control and returned his attention to the corridor ahead.
Man'darr activated his comm. "We have reached the prison cells and are currently recovering the prisoners and making our way to the extraction point."
Woolheater heard Man'darr's report through the weapons fire surrounding Team B.
=/\= Copy, Team A. Get them to extraction. Watch your ass and don't get drawn into anything you don't have to fight. Good fuckin' work. Woolheater out. =/\=
Sam returned his attention to Team B's advance.
As Man'darr led Rin to the extraction point, she added. "They have - or had - samples of my nanites. I think I scared them into destroying them. They have some... exaggerated ideas of their danger now. I told them it was full of tiny robots that want to take over your brain, and also they might explode. If you can locate and confirm that, I'd be appreciated. They're not immediately dangerous, but people have a habit of doing stupid shit with that tech when they get hold of it."
Borg nanites freaked Man'darr out. Tiny robots capable of assimilating people, though he knew enough that they had other duties such as healing the host and though he wasn't particularly close with Rin. He knew her enough to trust her. "Consider it done. They likely took the samples to a lab." He quickly tapped a few commands that brought up a schematic of the prison. One section over looked to be the medical wing and labs. That would be where they would store them. "But first, let's get you out of here,"
While Alpha breached the prison section, a smaller team of three broke off for another direction. Intel had put the evidence lockers not too far from where most of the detained had been held, and they had one more target.
Joshua led the other two marines toward the evidence lockers. His phaser rifle at the ready to deal with any who thought of stopping him. The trio moved with fluid grace as they advanced down the corridor. Their steps their very moves totally in sync. Quiet as falling snow. "We're getting close. Eyes open on swivels now." He told the pair.
The explosions in the distance and the alarm made Kerilia jump. Her wide eyes tried to see what was going on, but the fear that had gripped her for over a day kept her far away from the threshold of the cell. She pushed herself into the corner and curled up, her body trembling as she clamped her eyes shut. The guards left the resonance modulator over her face and her wrists secured behind her, so she pushed her head as close to her knees as she could get.
The trio arrived at the evidence lockers. "You two guard the corridor no one gets past you. This shouldn't take long." He said as he moved to the lockers. "Kerilia?" He called out "Kerilia?" A bit louder as he opened one locker door and then another and found them both empty. "Come on girl." He whispered, "Where are you?" As he moved toward the third evidence locker.
Kerilia didn't move for a couple seconds. It wasn't until she heard her name again that she dared to look up, tears freely flowing from her eyes. The difference between her cell and the others was that it was a solid door instead of a forcefield. The guards called her many things, but not by her name... could this be a rescue? She tried to call out, but the resonance modulator silenced it. Her hands were useless, but she still had her feet. But what if it drew the wrong attention? She hesitated for a few seconds. It wasn't the first time someone found her. Addison did, during the Galtonian attacks. She would have stayed hidden if she hadn't been brave enough to check the door. The guards never called her by name. Building up the courage, she shut her eyes again as she leaned back and drove her feet into the door of the space confining her.
Bang!
Josh paused as he heard a bang it was close, he looked about and saw a locked with a solid door and not a forcefield. he moved closer, "Kerilia?" He said louder but not dangerously so. He looked up the corridor so far so good no guards had come this was but how much longer could their luck last?
I'm here!! Kerilia shouted into the resonance modulator. She couldn’t even hear her own voice, so there was no way for him to. Her heart was racing, simultaneously hopeful for a rescue and terrified that it was the guards tormenting her. She kicked the door again, wincing a little as it stung the bottom of her foot.
Josh heard the second thump much clearer and it came from the locker with the solid door. He tried the handle it was locked. "Of course." He muttered. "Kerilia, I'm going to shoot the door open stand back." As brought the phaser rifle to bear on the door lock and pressed the trigger. A second later the door lock was reduced to slag and he kicked the door open. His eyes swept the locker finding and settling on a slight girl. "Everything is okay sweetheart. I'm going to get you out of here." He said as he took a step toward her.
Hearing his intentions, Kerilia got as far away from the door as she could, which wasn't easy given the confined space. The weapon's blast scared her, but when the door opened she recognised the uniform. Even if she didn’t know the person approaching her, the uniform meant Starfleet. Starfleet meant that the Elysium hadn't abandoned them! Relieved that it wasn't the guards, she gave him a nod as new tears formed in her eyes. It was clear that she was terrified, but not of him.
"All is alright now." Josh said softly as he moved to release her restraints and free her hands. "Hold still. I'm going to get this gag off you so you can talk and breathe." As his hands worked on the resonance modulator and after a few anxious moments it fell away from Kerilia's face. "There that is much better."
Kerilia tried to stay still as Joshua freed her of the restraints. She was shaking, terrified of this place and what was happening. When he released the mechanism on the resonance modulator, she didn't hesitate to help pry the barbaric thing off. Her audible gasp for air nearly startled her. She hadn't heard her own voice, or even her own breathing, this whole time. It was sharp, a little strained from hours of screaming and crying, but it was hers. It was hers.
A trembling hand touched her own cheek, where the gag left a red outline on her skin. Her cheeks were wet. She looked up at Joshua. Even in the flashing emergency lights, her new dermaglyph was clearly visible, an upside down crescent just above her forehead ridge. Kerilia opened her mouth to speak, but flinched when she heard weapons fire.
Josh saw her flinch and instantly sought to calm her. "It's okay your safe. That isn't near us. We're leaving this place to get you back to the Elysium, Can you walk?"
Swallowing, Kerilia returned her attention to him and nodded. As Joshua helped her up, Kerilia was struggling to hold it together. Between shuddered breaths, she managed to squeak out, her voice raw, "I-I want... I w-want my dad..."
Josh allowed a smile, albeit a small one to grace his features. "You will soon be back aboard the Elysium and be reunited with your dad," He told Kerilia. " However, right now I want you to stay right behind me. Hold my belt if you have to but stay close. " He
moved up the corridor at the other two marines, we are leaving. "Let's get back to the Elysium. Kerilia has a reunion with her father that can't wait."
Kerilia did not want to get lost in the prison. She quickly grabbed his belt to follow.
A handful of guards ran toward the cell blocks when the forcefields went down for the entire section. "By order of the Sovereignty, surrender yourself!!" One shouted wheb they got close enough.
Man'darr stepped forward in front of Rin. "By order of Starfleet, kiss my ass!" he insulted, immediately opened fire as did several Marines.
Josh along with his two fellow marines and Kerilia in tow moved down the corridor towards the extraction point. Not too far away weapon fire could be heard. Federation weapon fire. Josh glanced back at Kerilia "You are doing fine not too much farther to go,"
Elsewhere, Woolheater checked the tactical display again. Young's element was operating separately on its own objective. He keyed the Marine channel.
=/\= Woolheater calling Young. =/\=
Josh's little team moved at a steady deliberate pace. As his combadge chirped to life he snapped his fingers and the group stopped, weapons still at the ready. =^= Go for Young=^=
=/\= Captain Young, SITREP. =/\=
=^= We have Kerilia. She is unharmed. have met light resistance. We are making our way to the extraction point.=^= Josh replied keeping the message short and to the point.
For the first time since the assault began, Sam allowed himself a small breath of relief. Another name accounted for.
=/\= Copy, Young. Extra bowl of gruel for you, Cap. Good work. Haul ass and get her home. Woolheater out. =/\=
Then Sam turned his attention back toward High Security. There were still people waiting for them.
=^= Josh allowed a brief hurried chuckle to go over the comline, A bowl of extra gruel? Gee thanks dad. Hauling ass. Heading for home. Should see you soon.=^=
Man'darr tossed a grenade at the guards. The resulting explosion was deafening. He then glanced at the schematic. He was now closer to the medical section. He waved over a Marine Sergeant. "Sergeant, escort Commander Rin the rest of the way to the extraction point. I have to make sure some nanites are destroyed."
Man'darr took a side hallway and made his way towards the medical section . "Computer," he said, activating his suit's computer. Begin scanning for Borg technology, specifically Nanoprobes."
The computer chirped in his ear piece as it scanned the surrounding area. He opened fire as two guards rounded the corner, being cut down instantly. The tactical computer beeped as he came up to a door. "Borg technology located." He stepped through the door into an empty lab. Looking around, he spotted blood in a sealed cabinet with what appeared to be a forcefield around the cabinet with what seemed like Lonian warning displays. "Bingo," he commented as he set a photo grenade next to the cabinet and set the timer to one minute and power setting to full power, which would be enough to destroy the samples along with the lab itself He pressed the timer and quickly made his way out of the lab.
