The door slid open, and an elderly woman appeared. Her greyed hair was pulled back into a low bun, and it was obvious that Teevs inherited many of her features. She had a knit jacket over a soft teal shirt, grey slacks, and a cane in her right hand. “There you are!” Jelmia exclaimed, pulling Kerilia into a hug. “By Thilia, you've gotten so big! And your ridge is so beautiful, starlight!"
“Grandma!!” Kerilia swept into the hug, being careful of her frail state but also soaking in every moment.
Jelmia turned her attention toward Teevs and waved her cane at him. “Shame on you for keeping my granddaughter away for so long! She's grown up so much!”
Teevs offered a sheepish smile, leaning back to avoid the cane. “Sorry, Mother, we took a more scenic route back home.” Giving Addison's hand a light squeeze, he briefly separated from her to greet his mother. He moved around the cane and gave her a hug before they touched foreheads. "This is my partner, Addison," he said while gesturing back to Addison. “Addison, my mother, Jelmia."
"Hello. It's a pleasure to meet you," Addison greeted, taking a step forward, keeping her hands clasped together in front of her as she wasn't quite sure on how to greet the older woman.
Jelmia smiled as she looked Addison over. "My, aren't you adorable!" It wasn’t much of a surprise that Teevs brought home an alien, considering how long he had been away from home. Not many Lonians left home, after all, but she was content just to see him happy again. "Tell me: does he treat you right? Are you two happy? He at least cooks real food and doesn't feed you any of those disgusting ship ready-meals, right?"
"Mother..." Teevs sighed.
Addison stifled a laugh. "Yes, we're happy. He treats me well and does cook when it's possible. He's been a huge asset to the Elysium --the ship that I serve on."
A soft and attentive 'hmm' came from the elderly woman as she nodded. "Well, I'm glad to hear that my son didn't forget his manners after all that travelling he does. Come, you must be hungry!" Jelmia waved Addison closer with a hand to hook her arm in that elderly 'you are coming with me now' way. Turning to Kerilia, she added, "I knew you were coming, so I made your favourite treat."
Kerilia's eyes widened. "Iyaka cookies??? Oh, thank you, Grandma! Addison, you'll love them!"
Teevs gave Addison a slight smile. He had warned her that his mother would try to give her food, and that she would guilt trip if the offer was turned down. The trick to not exploding from overconsumption was to insist on grabbing the food instead of having it served.
Addison was glad to see Kerilla so happy after the past several weeks. "I'm sure I will. Lead the way, Kerilla."
The entryway was a short hallway that led to a small room. Ahead of them was the stairs to go up, to the left came the smell of freshly baked cookies from the kitchen, and to the right was a living room with the lights off. The decorations were abstract pieces of art and some holophotos of various family members. One was from about 5 years ago with all the grandkids, back when Kerilia was about 9 Earth years old. Others had the families of each of Teevs' siblings. The one with Teevs was him and Kerilia, about a year before they met the Elysium. They were on some hiking trail surrounded by impressively orange flora.
Jelmia insisted on removing shoes as she slid into her house slippers that were waiting by the door. Then, she used her cane to point toward a closet. "There was some spare slippers in there if you want them, dear."
Not wanting to offend the woman, Addison nodded., grabbing the spare slippers. "Thank you," she replied before removing her shoes and slipping on the house slippers that were very comfortable.
Teevs also changed his shoes and noticed the pile of other shoes stuffed into the corner of the closet. Others were here? Where were they? "Where is everyone?" he asked. It was really bizarre to not be bombarded by people whenever they visited.
Jelmia gave him a smile, her gaze only briefly shifting to Kerilia as the teenager was taking off her shoes. Her smile was sweet, but her eyes told a different story. "Telou went into labour, so the family went to help. I stayed behind because I've seen plenty of births, and someone needed to greet you when you showed up."
The excuse, combined with the shift in glance to Kerilia, was all Teevs needed to know. It was the same tradition they did when Teevs reached puberty, and it started as a joke but turned into a family tradition by now. With a barely-contained grin, he nodded to his mother. "I hope it's easy on her."
As Kerilia went ahead to go get cookies, Teevs slipped his hand into Addison's and leaned in. "Heads up: they're going to surprise her," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
"Ah, okay," she whispered back, gripping Teevs' hand as she grinned Teevs was a lucky man to have such a large and loving family. Which helped to settle her nerves some.
Teevs smiled at her and kissed the back of her hand. He wouldn't let her be consumed by geese, or whatever that Human phrase was that came up during one of the many casual discussions with Orin.
Kerilia went to the kitchen to look for the cookies, completely oblivious to the conversation. She could smell them, a sweet vanilla aroma, but she didn’t see any plates or baking trays. She checked the oven, which was still warm, but empty. "Grandma, where are the cookies?"
"Living room, dear," Jelmia called back, her smile widening slightly. She followed behind Kerilia as she changed rooms, Teevs and Addison bringing up the rear.
They entered the living room, and there was a pause before the lights came on. A huge banner hung from the ceiling that said ‘Forena Sen Vakai, Kerilia’, and people quickly came out of various hiding places. Many were other kids, neices and nephews, but adults were also present. “SURPRISE!!!” They all shouted.
'Forena Sen Vakai,' Addison pondered as she looked at the banner 'Guess that means welcome home.'
The sudden noise made Kerilia jump, and it took her a couple seconds to realise what was going on. Her eyes found Aunt Telou, who was still very pregnant, which confirmed that this was a surprise party. For Kerilia. Her surprise party!
The silence that filled the room vanished as life returned. Chatter erupted from multiple directions, people began moving, and the celebration took shape. A few people came up to Addison after they peppered Kerilia with affection, curious about the guest, and they promptly bombarded her with questions.
"How did you meet Teevs?"
"How long have you been together?"
"Have you visited our planet before?"
"What is your ship like?"
"Are you really from another galaxy?"
"Are you hungry? Thirsty?"
"What species are you?"
"Have you shown Teevs any of your customs?"
"Has Teevs told you about any of our customs?"
"What planet are you from?"
"What's your planet like?"
"Tell us more about this Federation!"
"Do your people keep pets? Do you have one?"
"What is your family like?"
"Has Teevs met your family yet?"
"How big is your family?"
The bombardment of questions caught her off guard as it took a moment for Addison to recover, trying to recall the questions. "We met on my ship the Elysium. A couple months, No, I haven't. Um, it's big. Yes I am ...um, I'm sorry, what were the other questions again?" The moment felt like a blur.
Teevs held up a hand toward his family before they could fire off even more questions. "There will be plenty of time for questions. She just got here, let her adjust!" This was exactly what he had warned Addison about, and he glanced her way to silently check in with her.
Addison smiled though she was more nervous. "I'm fine. Just a bit slower with the questions, please."
"What did you think would happen, Teevs??" One of the women asked. Her short, light brown hair was feathered back in a tomboy style, and she helped shoo away some of the crowd. "You go off into space for nearly two cycles and find a girlfriend out there, of course we have questions!" Looking to Addison, she gave the woman a smile. "I'm Eizqa, the youngest of the siblings."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Eizqa, Teevs did warn me about the possible bombardment of questions," she chuckled. She glanced at Teevs, giving his hand a slight squeeze.
Feeling the hand squeeze, Teevs kept his grip just firm enough to be an anchor, and gently brushed the back of her hand with his thumb to hopefully help soothe the nerves.
"I hate to say it, but that is entirely his fault," Eizqa joked with a grin. "He left out just enough information in his messages."
"Sounds like a set up," Addison teased, chuckling as she looked to Teevs.
Teevs gave his sister a mock glare, then chuckled. "I told them that they could ask you the questions they were asking me, but I did not anticipate them asking all at once-"
"Uncle Teevs!!!" A few small voices shouted.
Teevs barely had time to look before he was tackled by 4 boys. A small 'ooph' escaped him as he fought to maintain balance. He let go of Addison's hand so he wouldn't take her down with him. He was able to absorb the impact to keep one of the kids safe, but there was definitely going to be a bruise later.
"Much deserved for ambushing me," Addison teased, laughing as she watched the smaller boys tackle Teevs.
Kova came over with a grin to watch the chaos. "Boys!!" The kids peeled away from Teevs as Kova came over to help him up. He then put his brother in a loose headlock to mess up his hair. "How is my little brother?" The two were nearly spitting images of each other, only Kova had a slightly longer face.
With a chuckle, Teevs pushed him off before playfully punching his arm. "I'm fine, Kova. Nice to see home again. How are things with you?"
"Only 'nice'?? Is that all we are to you???" Kova teased. He used a hand to ruffle Teevs' hair again before the man swatted him away, then he laughed. "It's been a little chaotic, especially with number five on the way, but we're adapting. Voran lost his first tooth the other week."
Teevs fixed his hair with a hand. "He is really growing up so fast." Anticipating the question as he caught Kova's gaze drifting over to Addison, he added, "Kova, Addison. Addison, this is my older brother, Kova. His wife is Telou, the pregnant one, and those are their four kids: Voran, Kaasa, Temar, and Leek." He gestured to the four boys who had tackled him and were now swarming Kerilia as she brought in the box of gifts.
"It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm sure your kids keep you busy," Addison smiled, gesturing at the four boys.
Kova chuckled. "They sure do. This will be our last one, and we're hoping for a girl this time." He looked Addison over before giving a nod of approval. He then smirked and winked, "he always liked tall girls, you know. You should ask him about his first crush."
Eizqa rolled her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, though she couldn't hide the amusement from her lips.
Teevs' cheeks went red as he pushed his brother away. "O-kaaay, go somewhere else now. Others want to meet her, too."
"Oh? So that's why you fell for me? My height?" she teased with a smile, tilting her head slightly to the side.
For once, Teevs' usual comebacks were lacking as he stammered for a response. The question seemed to male him blush more. "That's... that's not the only reason..."
Kova grinned at that as he resisted the push from his brother, almost seeming to ignore Teevs as he addressed Addison. "Oh, we will get along just fine!"
Addison couldn't help but smile. She was enjoying Teevs' family. "I'm glad to hear that.
"If you three would act like adults for a moment..." Another voice said from nearby. The woman who approached looked somewhat similar to Eizqa, only her sandy brown hair was pulled back into a braided bun. She was older, a couple wrinkles faintly accenting her features.
Kova glanced over, his smile fading slightly. "Well, the fun police arrived." He looked back to Addison, "this is Ailova, the oldest. And frankly, the most boring."
Addison could understand the comment. She was sure every family had such a person. Her family certainly did--her Aunt Bethany. "It is a pleasure to meet you."
Ailova tried to not roll her eyes at Kova, and she gave a brief nod to Addison to return the greeting before tuening her attention to Teevs and Kova. "The Sen Vakai ceremony isn't going to plan itself. You know how long it takes to organise it."
"It's a glorified campfire, Ailova. How hard is it to actually plan?" Kova snorted.
"Guys," Teevs interjected, before they got too far into it. If there was one thing that could snap him out of embarrassment, it was dealing with his sister. "Can we not do this right now? We just got here. Surely planning the ceremony can wait, just a little bit."
Ailova turned her attention to Teevs, raising a brow. She then sighed with a hint of impatience. "Whatever, it's only your kid's most important day."
That made Teevs briefly annoyed, but he forced himself to let it go. "Just give us an hour to socialise first," he offered as a compromise. "An hour won't hurt anything."
To keep herself from slapping her brother silly, Ailova turned her focus onto Addison again. "Abby, right? What do you do for work?"
"Addison," she corrected, "but my friends do call me Addy, not Abby. I'm a starfighter pilot in Starfleet."
Ailova raised a brow. "Why? What inspired you to become a pilot?"
"It's kind of a family tradition," Addison chuckled with a slight shrug. "My family even owns a museum back on Earth with many historical airplane models."
Eizqa glanced between the two women, trying to gauge how it was going. It was difficult to impress Ailova. Kova had lost a couple dates to Ailova's grilling years ago, but Addison seemed to be holding her own just fine.
The mention of tradition seemed to resonate enough with Ailova for her to ease up slightly. Slightly. While Teevs was well past adolescence and could make his own decisions, Ailova had always been the protective one of the siblings, and it showed. If anything, she was protective of the family as a whole. "As someone who follows tradition, maybe you can convince my brother to prioritise planning the Sen Vakai ceremony."
"Ailova," Teevs warned, giving her a look that told her to stop. They had plenty of time to plan the Sen Vakai ceremony, and Kova was right in that it was ultimately just a glorified campfire. It did not take long to buy the candles and start a fire.
"Well, as long as Kerilla is ok with it, I'd say yes, the planning should be important," she gave Teevs a playful punch in the arm.
"Don't encourage her," Teevs said with a sigh, before turning his attention back to his older sister. "Fine, I'll do it now just so you will stop being annoying."
Eizqa smiled and rested a hand on Addison's shoulder. "Don't worry, we'll take care of your girlfriend in the meantime," she teased. Thank the stars Ailova didn’t cause a scene.
"Yeah, I can tell her about your embarrassing childhood moments while you go perform your parental responsibilities," Kova chimed in with a grin.
Addison smiled as she watched the interaction. It reminded her of her siblings.
For a briefest of moments, Teevs almost regretting introducing her. They seemed to be getting along too well. "I'll be upstairs if they become too much," he told Addison, before giving her a kiss. His cheeks warmed as Kova dramatically cooed at the affection, and as he left he made sure to punch his brother's arm.
Addison watched as Teevs headed for the stairway.
With Teevs gone, Eizqa shooed away Kova. "Speaking of parental responsibilities, go get your kids before they smother Kerilia." Turning to Addison, she gave the woman a warm smile. "You've come into a big family, Addison. The rest are in the backyard, if you want to meet them?"
"Sure!" she said, smiling as she and Eizqa headed for the backyard.
