Baeryn had sent out an alert to all members of Operations that they were to report to the conference room for a mandatory department meeting first thing that morning. Given the addition of the new Assistant Chief of Ops as well as two operation officers it was time she meet with the team as a whole.
The Lieutenant stood at the head of the table. A forearm resting on the back of a chair while her eyes gazed out the view screen, silently she awaited everyone's arrival.
Myne did her best to arrive early to the meeting. Her first department meeting onboard of the Elysium. Holding her custom PADD, recently upgraded and tinkered on in her hands she entered the room. "Hi boss... ma'am..." She smiles at Lieutenant Baeryn and looked at the table a bit awkwardly. "Erm... can I sit in one of those chairs at our side? Or you can tell me where you want me to sit of course!!"
Baeryn greeted Myne with a bright smile, the freckles on her face shifting as she did so. "You may sit wherever you feel most comfortable, though I would appreciate it if you took up a spot on my right. You are after all, assistant chief."
"Yes boss, thank you!! This is only the second time I've been assistant to a department head. And the first time had been a long time ago. I'll get the hang of it soon boss, just always feel free to guide me till then!" Myne replies smiling eagerly as she took her place at Baeryn's right. Setting her custom PADD on the table she fidgeted a bit. "Do we make small talk now or wait for the others?"
Baeryn shrugged, "Whichever you prefer. How are you finding the ship? Is she too your liking?" Lacing her fingers together she leaned both forearms on the back of the chair as she shifted her attention towards the trill.
"The ship? Erm... so freaking big. My previous assignment was on the USS Pegasus, a Defiant class. There is no comparison boss. The scale of the Elysium is kind of intimidating. Don't get me wrong, I love it! Just gotta get used to it really." Myne eagerly and excitedly chatted her chief, decorum not being her strong point.
A chuckle left the hybrid. "There are days I forget we're on a starship, it took me a while to get comfortable with the Elysium's size as well. Don't let it overwhelm you." She laughed again, "I was constantly getting lost in the beginning, too stubborn to use the computer for directions. But don't tell anyone I told you that." She playfully scrunched her nose.
"Actually that is a good point. The ship is big enough that it can make you forget that you are surrounded by nothing but a cold void. No worries boss, I will be fine. My previous to last host spent many decades among the Ferengi and believe me, if you can survive that and remain sane, then nothing really bothers you anymore." Giggling and smiling rather innocent Myne nodded. "I won't tell a soul boss. I usually get lots because, erm, I forget to ask the computer..."
"One day I would love to hear more about your previous hosts, if that's a topic your willing to talk about. Its in no way a mandatory conversation, i'm just curious. I haven't met many joined trills." Baeryn hoped her interest wouldn't cause any discomfort for the trill.
"Erm, you sure boss? I don't mind per say, buuuut..." She trailed off and looked a bit uncomfortable. "You see, most of my previous hosts were not, erm, good people. Maybe the last one was really cool and nice, but most were rather unpleasant and unsavory. But I don't mind talking about them, as long as you don't hate me afterward!" Myne concluded with a wide, innocent smile rather indicative of the airheaded nature that is representative of her.
"Consider my interest further peaked, "She chuckled. Baeryn could sense Myne's discomfort like a cold prickling feeling along her skin. "I could never hate you for the actions or unsavory personalities of those before you. I understand that they are you, but that they also aren't in the same sense. I look forward to our talk." Baeryn smiled and looked up as the first rest of the department started to trickle into the room.
Rubbing the back of her head she smiled awkwardly. "Thank you boss, I appreciate it. Yeah it is really screwy, they are me and not at the same time. Like they are me, I remember every moment and such, I did those things. Yet, this is not the body in which?! There were legal debates back on my world on it, but the law basically doesn't punish a new host for what the old host did." Myne said turning to look at the fellow operation officers entering the room.
The hybrid's eyes widened hearing Myne speak about basically living multiple lives. The entire ordeal intrigued her and she hoped that when they had the time to chat she didn't pester the poor officer with all her questions. Sure Baeryn know the basics and had met a handful of joined trills, but she never had the opportunity to actually speak with one outside of what ever the job required. "I look forward to our conversation greatly Myne." She said with a smile before turning towards the others joining them.
Scott was wiping the creases out of his tunic, while waiting for Sapphire. " Are you almost ready Sapphire honey?" He asked. "We don't want to make a bad impression with Lt. Whavi."
Sapphire stepped up, "lets go" she said pulling him into the room.
Vira was next to arrive, her long ponytail swishing back and forth as she smiled at the two females in the room, "Morning!" She greeted a little too peppy as she took a seat on the opposite end of the table.
Samaire was among the last to arrive, she entered silently and took a seat at the back.
Seeing the last of her department enter Baeryn straightened her posture as she waited for everyone to get settled. Once they had all taken their seats she cleared her throat before speaking. She wasn't fond of holding meetings, Baeryn was better suited one on one, but unfortunately as department head, this was something she knew was mandatory if they were to succeed as a team.
"Thank you everyone for arriving, and on time at that. I know we haven't met together yet but moving forward I would like this to be a staple in our department." Baeryn paused briefly, her obsidian eyes flickering from one persons to the next. "So introductions anyone? We have quite a few new faces." Looking to Myne she asked, "Would you like the honors of going first?"
As the Chief of Operations spoke, Myne's gaze snaked from her to the other members of the department present at the meeting. She couldn't help but feel a bit anxious about it, given the size of the department on this ship. It took Myne a very long second to realize that the chief was talking to her. "Ah, yes yes! Of course boss!" Getting up from her chair she waved at the others in attendance. "Hi hi everyone. I am Lieutenant JG Myne Redal, please call me Myne or Redal as you wish, I do not mind. I am the new Assistant Chief Operations Officer." With that said she sat back down and smiled nervously at Baeryn.
Sapphire had to smile at the bouncy Lieutenant. She inclined her head at the trill.
Baeryn nodded her approval to Myne before making eye contact with Lieutenant Gregory. "Scott?"
Scott stood and smiled at the others, his smile lingering on Sapphire. "I'm Lieutenant Scott Gregory. Most of the time I'm overseeing power grid. making sure the power is distributed evenly and if needed able to shunt power to a department in case of an emergency."
Vira all but jumped up bursting with restless energy. "Hi!" She gave a little wave as she glanced around the room. "Ensign Vira Vemre. Recently transferred in from the USS Rosenbloom. Currently i'm just a transporter tech but willing to help anywhere and anyway I can." Vira fought the urge to bow as she sat back down. She looked towards Samaire, silently urging her to go next.
Samaire took a breath. "Ensign Samaire McBride, I am from the 2260's born in 2236. I have only been back in the fleet about 6 months since my retraining ended. I have my 5 year old niece with me. I am still learning about this time."
"Lieutenant Sapphire Morgan" Sapphire said as Samaire finished. "I have been on the Elysium for nearly 2 years, I am very happy in this department and on this ship."
"Alright, now that the pleasantries are out of the way. Let talk Operations." She paused for a moment, " I have little to no complaints, you all are doing an exceptional job and I couldn't be more content with your work ethics. That being said I'd like to challenge you. You all are on different levels of knowledge and experience and I would like to see that shared among you. I would like you to work with a partner and see what you can teach/learn from one another. Now I'm not expecting you have the inner workings of the sensor arrays memorized. There is a broad spectrum of knowledge in this room that can be shared with one another. Thoughts team? I'm open to any question or suggestion you might have."
As Baeryn spoke. Scott's eyes fell on Sapphire. He wanted her as his partner in this little experiment. "Lieutenant Whavi, do we choose our partner or are you going to assign partners?"
Whavi caught where his eyes led and she couldn't help but smirk, "I'd like to think you all can pair up respectfully. Unless you would rather I assign you all?" Her brows lifted in question.
"No, no. I choose Lt. Morgan for my partner." He said with a smile as his eyes drifted back to Sapphire.
Myne watched the exchange between Scott and Baeryn, completely missing the point and subtext. Finding the whole exchange really strange. In a low tone and a bit shy she looked at Baeryn and spoke up. "I don't mind being assigned a partner. If anyone wants to learn more about hacking that is..."
"Oh I definitively would!" Vira all but raised her hand at Myne's offer. The young officer knew there was much she could learn from the assistant ops officer.
Baeryn sighed softly but still managed a chuckle. "Please use the information learned wisely. I had that I feel the need to reiterate that to you Vemre."
Vira took no offense, smiling as she waited to hear if her offer was accepted by Myne.
Looking at Vira, Myne stared surprised, clearly not expecting anyone to want to actually team with her. "Erm, yeah, sure. If you want to. I'd like that, yeah, pretty sure I would!" She nodded at the Ensign clearly speaking out loud bits and bobs of what she is actively thinking.
Vira's shoulders lifted with excitement. "I can't wait!"
"Ensign McBride, feel free to join either pairing, or tag along with me for a shift. I promise not to work you too hard." Said Whavi.
"You can join Sapphire and me if you like Samaire. We'd be pleased to have you." Scott told her.
"Uh,.." Samaire considered it. "Sure sounds good" She said to Scott and Sapphire with a small smile.
Baeryn clapped her hands together, "Well before we set off I have a few minor house keeping things to go over." The hybrid lifted the PaDD before her and read off a list of things she wanted the team to keep in mind, cleaning of their areas, the proper storage of their equipment and how important it was to work seamlessly with other departments. When she was finished she looked around the room, "Any questions or suggestions team? Ask now or hold your peace."
"No questions here boss. I assume we are starting this pairing thing after the meeting, right? So, let us go over the house keeping thingies?" Myne said after looking around the table once, eager to get started on more fun things.
Scott nodded in agreement. " I concur. Lets get to the house keeping stuff and go it. Then we can get to working in pairs."
"groups" Came Samaire's dry reply. Not all were in pairs after all.
Scott nodded at Samaire's statement. "I stand corrected. I meant no offense. "
Baeryn shook her head hiding the smirk, after clearing her throat she reviewed with the team the items she had on her list in detail. Even going as far as to assign a few of them specific tasks she would be requesting reports on later that week. When she was finished she dismissed the crew, surprised by how well the meeting had gone and thankful she had such a welcoming team.
