Mission: Season 2: Episode 3: Determination is not always a good thing
Location: Briefing room
Timeline: MD1
1630 words - 3.3 OF Standard Post Measure

[[Captains log. Our weeks R&R has come to a close and now with the entire crew back on board with a couple of exceptions are readying the ship for departure. With this in mind, i have summoned the senior staff to the main briefing room to discuss where we are being sent next.]]

Phoenix stood silent in the briefing room awaiting her senior staff to arrive.

Matias came in and sat down.

Arrianna entered the room with a cup of Tarkelian tea and sat down calmly. She had changed her hair style from the long hair she was known for to a French braid with a Hair Clip.

Carlos entered behind the Chief of Science and gave the captain a brief nod before taking a seat midway down the table. He was new, so he didn't know if he was taking someone's seat or not. He ended up beside Arrianna.

Liselle entered the room feeling nervous. Her recent promotion was still fresh in her mind and she wasn't exactly sure if the Captain was about to announce it or not. The anticipation tensed her entire frame as she found a chair.

Tate entered the briefing, carrying her usual raktajino. She smiled her usual greetings but was obviously tired as she took her seat.

Anje entered nervously behind an attractive woman in teal, maybe a doctor? ~Not that I'd know, I literally know nobody here.~ She thought, wishing she was more Vulcan so that logic could fight off the impending panic attack. She took a seat beside the woman in teal and stayed quiet for the time being.

Wynter slipped in silently before standing in the back.

Tag arrivals.

Once everyone was seated around the large table Phoenix moved to her chair. She didn't sit however. She took a breath. "First up we have some crew changes for you all to be aware of. Commander Holmes has been medically transferred off the Elysium. This is a surprise thing and one we are shocked at. This means that while we wait for her replacement Lieutenant Kaz will now be stepping up temporarily. And Commander Liselle Qwyyn will be our second officer." She paused to allow congratulations and welcomes go around the table.

"Congrratulations to you both," said Matias.

Liselle blew the tension out in a sigh. "Thanks," she smiled, her relief evident.

"Way to go," Tate added, her smile genuine.

Once they were done, Phoenix mentally reassessed her meeting agenda. "And we welcome Lieutenant Brett as our new chief of operations. So lets start with departmental reports. And so we shall start with .....Engineering."

"Engineering reports the damage has been repaired and we are re-calibrating at this moment." said Matias.

"Thank you Commander." Phoenix turned to the next officer on her list. "Lt. Commander Sullivan, how fares Counseling?"

"People are settling back down," she answered. "Quite a few people were unnerved by our ship swapping venture, but there's no major issues. There's a lot of new faces to get to know."

"I am sure everyone will make sure their department personnel makes sure they attend their annual reviews." Phoenix said with a smile. "Which brings me to Medical..." she turned to the Gorn.

" Everything is going perfectly fine captain. " The old gorn replied from his seat. " We need to ssspend a little time to replace lossst sssuppliesss, but we ssshould be fine."

"Thank you commander. Now, Flight control?" Phoenix looked at Liselle.

"Although my department is performing well, our recent mission has made me a little nervous about our crew's ability to handle a vessel that isn't the Elysium or one of its shuttles. I'd like for everyone to be a little more prepared for any future surprises so I've started scheduling some broader refresher training of various vessel configurations."

With a small nod of thanks, Phoenix looked towards the next officer. "Thank you Commander Qwyyn. Science? Your report?"

"Science Division is ready, Captain. I still need to speak to some new personnel we've got onboard though. I have a lot of inexperienced young minds in my department." She mentioned. "I'm hoping Lt. Capulet would add some needed leadership to my department."

Smiling Phoenix thanked Arrianna for her report and moved to the next person. "Lieutenant Kaz your report on the Security/Tactical Department please."

Tag Felicity

Once the report was finished, Phoenix moved onto the next with a nod of thanks to the new Chief. "Operations?" she continued looking at the new Lieutenant. "I am sure your department left you comprehensive reports."

"Yes, Sir." Anje replied quickly, "Everything seems to be in good order, my predecessor really left things nicely set up for me."

Smiling, Phoenix turned to the next department chief. "Lieutenant Wynter? Do you have anything to report for Intelligence?"

"We have a new intelligence officer, nothing more than that to report." Wynter replied

"Thank you Lieutenant. Ambassador?" She turned to the Klingon.

Toran had filed in and waited to be seated, giving the captain a customary nod as he was addressed. "Captain." Before being seated.

"And last but not least, Lt. Commander Harriman, how goes our newest department?"

"Merging well Captain. I am running drills and we are finding that teams have had to be changed around but we will be at peak efficiency soon enough." Carlos replied easily.

"Thank you commander. Now those are out of the way, to our next mission." Phoenix hit a button and the screen behind her sprung to life. "Cortic VI. A terraformed colony. Settled around 150 years ago. No issues despite its proximity to the Klingon border. Until now. They are suffering, according to reports, from a spate of natural disasters. And we are on relief detail." As Phoenix reported the images behind her showed a once pristine colony now shattered. Buildings were collapsed and roads buckled. "There is no rhyme or reason to these events. Weather and the like is controlled and monitored carefully... " she let that hang in the air.

As Phoenix briefed the crew on the problems of Cortic VI, Gary kept his own counsel on what a possible explanation could be and that explanation was that the natural disasters the colony was suffering were not natural but somehow man made.

Arri spoke. "These images that you've show thus far indicate vast geological instabilities." Arri mentioned. "You mentioned this planet was terraformed? I wonder if the calamities are a side effect of the techniques available nearly two centuries ago. Some of the techniques usually involved using particle beams to superheat gas within the mantle to form an atmosphere, and the use of Cyannobacteria to convert the carbon dioxide released into oxygen and nitrogen." The young woman noted. "Unfortunately, the use of geothermal activation is a careful procedure. One that could have drastic consequences. I will require the terraforming logs and data so we can understand the full terraforming process, we may be seeing the end result of a century old miscalculation. We will also need geological probes for an analysis of the planet's mantle and core."

"That will fall to your department Arri. You will need to work with Operations and Engineering with it. Medical, and Counseling you will be beaming down to assist with the wounded. Security and Tactical along with anyone else who wants to help will be assisting search and rescue. Matias you will need to divide your department to support this as well." Phoenix said.

"I'll have shuttles ready to go in case 'these events' the colony has been experiencing also interfere with transporters," Liselle added.

"Perhaps a couple of these shuttles, or better yet a couple of runabouts, could be devoted to field engineering teams, Commander." Anje suggested, her father had been, and still was, a huge proponent of that tactic that harkened back to the Sea Bees of old, "Start getting infrastructure back up. I can take my people down and start getting communications systems back online."

Liselle nodded. "I'll make the arrangements in the duty schedules."

Toran listened and checked his own date on a padd, finally speaking up when he was sure the Captain was more or less done explaining things. "About that proximity to the Klingon Boarder Captain. I Could Inquire if you like about any abnormal sensor readings any Klingon Defense Force ships might have picked up on the Klingon side of the boarder. I can also inquire about aid from the empire. They may have some ships in the area if Star Fleet feels comfortable enough letting them cross over."

Phoenix looked at the Ambassador. "I have been informed that the Federation have approached the Klingon empire for assistance but as yet those talks are on going. You can throw your weight behind them Ambassador. It would be a great assistance"

Toran gave the captain another nod. "I'll see who I can send a communication to, While I can have some movement made by my House without it breaking any laws or conventions of the Empire, I don't think acting unilaterally would be pertinent. But I can send a few messages." That seamed to be the end of his input, the Ambassador leaning back a bit and looking to see if anyone else had input.

"We depart at 05h00 so I want you all ready for then. It will take us 3 days at warp 8. You have that time to prepare your departments. Use it wisely." Phoenix said calmly. "Dismissed"

At being dismissed Toran would push himself up out of his chain, waiting for most of the others to make there way out before he himself moved to the door.
