The Reece family gathered outside Kyle's cabin and stared at the door before Cassia, rolling her eyes, hit the chime.
A few beats later, the door slid open, revealing the towering form of Kyle Reece. A few different emotions crossed his face as he looked over the faces of his assembled family. Finally, he simply arched an eyebrow and grinned softly. "Hey guys, what's up?'
Samaire took charge and handed him Skylah "Family dinner," She announced and pushed past him. "Liam, Nicholas, set the table! Cassia, entertain the kids."
Skylah meanwhile clung to Kyle in her now customary silence.
Kyle made a slight 'oof'ing' sound when his little niece was shoved into his arms. He immediately gave the little girl a warm hug and kiss on the side of her head, as her aunt and the rest of his family invaded his temporary quarters. Seeing what was planned, he couldn't help but smile warmly. He had been feeling very upset about the loss of his Vanessa, and it clearly showed, as his family had just arrived enmass to bring him and his children dome support.
As Liam and Nico started to get the table ready, Kyle's children came out of their room. "What's going on?" His daughter asked softly as her brother clung to her.
"Family dinner" Cassia said calmly as she walked over to them, "Samaire is preparing dinner in the kitchenette."
Samaire was humming as she cooked a meal for them all. She knew the foods the men liked and Cassia and her had similar tastes but she chose to make a simple chicken dish so the children would eat it.
Kyle, still holding young Skylah in his arms moved over to the small couch that was doubling as his bed for now. He gave the single bedroom to his new daughter and son. When more family quarters opened up, he'd ask for a three bedroom unit, but for now, they would make do. "Kids," he spoke softly to his children. "Come here, I want you to meet someone very special like you."
The two older children walked over to him. Zhavna looked at the little girl in his arms with a tilt to her head.
"Zhavna, Jassirc, this is your new cousin, Skylah. She is the niece of Samaire and adopted daughter of my little brother, Liam." Kyle gently indicated that his daughter and son should sit down next to him. "Skylah, these are your new cousins, Zhavna and her younger brother Jassirc. I adopted them a few weeks ago, but things have been so busy getting the ship ready, that there wasn't time, until now, for you three to meet."
Skylah gave a shy wave. "hi" she said softly.
"Hi" Zhavna replied.
Jassirc was a bit more outgoing. He extended his right hand to Skylah. "Hi," he said with a soft smile. "Skylah is a pretty name."
She reached out and shook his hand. "Thanks" she said
As Liam and Nicholas finished setting things up for dinner, Liam moved over to Samaire and kissed her left cheek. "I know she isn't feeling right right now, but I hope spending time with kids her own age, especially if they are now family, will help her feel more comfortable."
"Agreed" Samaire replied to him. "And it will do Kyle and his children some good as well."
Liam nodded again, as he cast his eyes over to his oldest sibling and the children.
Nicholas looked over as well. Though, while he was happy for both his brothers, he still felt an ache in his soul for the loss that he and Cassia shared. Moving over to her, he gently wrapped his arms around her as they both watched the children start to get to know one another.
The children spoke for a bit and eventually, Skylah left Kyle's lap to sit on the floor with the older two.
Cassia meanwhile leaned into Nicholas and watched them. Then she nodded. "It will be good," She said softly.
Nodding in agreement, Nicholas quietly whispered to Cassia, "One day, we will have that joy again, my love."
"I know" Cassia whispered softly.
Liam moved over to stand next to his wife. "Anything I can fo to help, Sweetheart?" He asked with a grin on his face.
"No we are almost done. Get everyone to wash up and to the table." Samaire said with a smile as she handed him the serving dish of Salad. "And put this on the table as you go"
Liam leaned in and kissed his wife's right cheek as he took the dish. "You got it, babe." He gave her the smile that was hers alone. Then, as he turned towards the table, he said aloud, "Dinner's almost ready everyone! Kids, go get washed up."
Kyle looked over at his baby brother and grinned. He then turned his attention back to the kids. "You heard him, kids, let's go get washed up." He stood and led the trio of children to the bathroom, where they washed their hands and faces.
On e everyone was ready, they moved to the table. As Nicholas pulled out a chair for Cassia, Liam did the same for Samaire.
Samaire smiled and helped settle Skylah into her chair and soon the family was sitting and passing the food around the table.
Cassia made sure that Jassirc and Zhavna got enough on their plates with soft words.
Skylah only took a small amount, she wasn't that hungry.
Once everyone had been served, Kyle, sitting at the head of the table, spoke up. "Before we dig in, on behalf of Zhavna and Jassirc, I want to say thank you for this. Sam, Cass, as I'm sure my brothers have told you, we were raised with the idea that, above all else, family comes first. We all look out for each other and take care of each other." He looked at both of women that brought happiness to his younger brothers and smiled. "The both of you came into this without knowing what lay in store. The fact that you brought your families here, to my table, speaks volumes. Thank you."
Cassia smiled. "You are most welcome."
"It's what family is for, Kyle." Samaire replied as they began to eat. "We will be here for you all."
Kyle smiled again at Samaire and Cassia, then his eyes and smiled moved to everyone else present, ending on his own children.
For the rest of the evening, the members of the Reece Clan enjoyed their dinner, then some dessert. After everything was cleared away, the children played together, while the adults enjoyed a few drinks.
When the evening was finally done, and Kyle had put his children to bed, he hugged his brothers, and kissed the cheeks of Samaire and Cassia, as everyone said goodnight and returned to their quarters.
